Apple's former design chief Jony Ive long dreamed of an iPhone with a truly all-screen design, and his wish might finally become reality in a few more years.

The Information today cited multiple sources who said that at least one new iPhone model launching in 2027 will have a truly edge-to-edge display. The device's front camera and Face ID system would both be placed under the screen.

2027 will mark the 20th anniversary of the iPhone, so the all-screen design could arrive at a significant moment in the device's history.

As a stepping stone towards this all-screen design, the report said that the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will be equipped with under-screen Face ID, with only a small pinhole remaining for the front camera on those devices.

The all-screen design would likely be reserved for higher-end iPhones, so it is likely coming on the iPhone 19 Pro models in September 2027.

Whatever they need to do to get rid of the BS “feature” that’s the dynamic Island.
I agree. It’s not a feature but a clever way of solving a problem Apple created (ie. how to hide FaceID?).
While I like the concept it’s poorly executed. Why don’t notifications like, for example, text messages spawn from the DI?
I’m sure an all screen device will be nice but I’m also sure the starting price will be ludicrous

Edge to edge displays might be aesthetically intriguing, but they are functionally stupid. Any reasonable protective case needs at least a little bit of a raised lip around the edge that would block a bit of the display if it went all the way to the edge. I care much more about the functional value of protecting the screen against damage than the aesthetic but functionally pointless bragging rights of having the display go right to the very edge.

does this technology exist though? I have seen under display camera reviews and they weren't good. Does that mean apple is "inventing" something that actually works?

That’s apples usual MO isn’t it? Wait until tech has matured enough before implementing it. There’s been a couple of under screen cameras out since 2020 but they have issues like compromised front camera performance, or still being able to see the camera

I haven’t put a case on my phone in close to half a decade. My screen is scratched, but who cares it still works. The titanium case on my iPhone 15 Pro Max still looks brand new. Why would I want to put a case on it?

My man Apple is probably already working on iPhone 20-21 they most likely have figured it out all, the only problem here is hopefully it will be good and come to handy and not just for the looks just like those Johny renders that came couple years ago… my God those look awful hopefully it doesn’t look like that.
