I guess I'll have to wait a few more years for the budget version of this. 😭

Even better if they added solar charging on the back!
People always want to add solar panels to everything. But it’s a waste of resources in places that aren’t exposed to the sun most of the time.

It would produce negligible amounts of electricity. Not enough to keep working off the grid, and perhaps not even enough to offset the amount of energy used during production.

Edge to edge displays might be aesthetically intriguing, but they are functionally stupid. Any reasonable protective case needs at least a little bit of a raised lip around the edge that would block a bit of the display if it went all the way to the edge. I care much more about the functional value of protecting the screen against damage than the aesthetic but functionally pointless bragging rights of having the display go right to the very edge

Easy solution: don’t use a case. I’m not sure why people still buy cases. In the past, they were a necessity. Phone bodies were made from weaker materials. I haven’t used a case for the past 3 generations of phones. I drop my iPhone 16 Pro Max all the time without issue, even face down on concrete. While I’m sure it can shatter if it falls just right, screen replacements are easy and cheap. It just doesn’t seem worth it (to me) to use a case. Extra weight and such for minimal gains.

I agree. It’s not a feature but a clever way of solving a problem Apple created (ie. how to hide FaceID?).
While I like the concept it’s poorly executed. Why don’t notifications like, for example, text messages spawn from the DI?
I’m sure an all screen device will be nice but I’m also sure the starting price will be ludicrous
I don’t think it was created to “hide”
FaceID. It was made to take advantage of the screen real estate surrounding it. Some app devs make good use of it, like Uber and Flighty. It’s not really a feature issue, more of an issue where it’s up to app devs to take advantage of what’s there. Even with an all-screen design, something akin to Dynamic Island will likely still be around. It’s just a logical way to display small amounts of info where a standard notification just isn’t that helpful (like realtime updates).

I wish they would make an ultra durable iPhone for the 20th anniversary. Even better if they added solar charging on the back! (with maybe some kind of cover for the cameras to protect against the sun)
Depending on your definition of “ultra durable,” they already have.

I remember Apple advertised a much earlier phone as all screen and it decidedly wasn’t

Will be great if Apple manages to release this for the 20th anniversary. It will be something special. It is also possible that Apple launches the foldable only in 2027 and that becomes the anniversary model with Pro models shifting to a hole punch design.

Solar panels on a phone… so you put your phone directly into the hot sun for what physics would dictate that in perfect conditions, you’d gain 2%-3% charge per hour based on an iPhone 16 Pro Max size. That’s if your battery didn’t blow up first from the heat and the phone wasn’t consuming any battery during charge.

The ideas some people have are astounding.

Apple's former design chief Jony Ive long dreamed of an iPhone with a truly all-screen design, and his wish might finally become reality in a few more years.

Beyond-iPhone-13-Better-Blue-Face-ID.jpg

The Information today cited multiple sources who said that at least one new iPhone model launching in 2027 will have a truly edge-to-edge display. The device's front camera and Face ID system would both be placed under the screen.

2027 will mark the 20th anniversary of the iPhone, so the all-screen design could arrive at a significant moment in the device's history.

As a stepping stone towards this all-screen design, the report said that the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will be equipped with under-screen Face ID, with only a small pinhole remaining for the front camera on those devices.

The all-screen design would likely be reserved for higher-end iPhones, so it is likely coming on the iPhone 19 Pro models in September 2027.

No Dynamic Island????? Use it all the time for sports!!!!!!

Well the 19 pro was likely my next phone if I keep to every three years. Just wonder if I can afford it this time around.

I'm not so sure they're talking quite THAT much edge to edge that the case would obscure it. I think they just mean less bezel and no cutout for the camera, etc.

This is the problem when these phones are created by marketers, engineers and leaders who get THEIR phones replaced cheaply and often.

After 5 years with no updates I will be getting a iPhone 17 pro max this year and skipping the 18 and 19 for the anniversary model.

If the rumours hold true i prefer a full screen display with no island, rather than an android pin hole design to the left of the screen.

The case I use adds inconsequentially to size and weight, but adds quite significantly to grip so that I don’t drop it and to protection when I do drop it.

Easier solution - just leave the display edges as is since it works just fine.

I like a case too and I'm quite quite sure the 19 pro will work fine with a case.

Many are expressing concern the 19 pro won't be compatible with cases. This article doesn't imply that at all. First off the render shows a phone with a metal edge and a bezel. Second, the article only discusses how the camera and face ID are handled without a cutout. As long as they have any kind of metal edge around the glass it will be fine with a case and this article implies that. It's also not in Apple's interest to completely remove the metal edge. Most damage from dropping a phone isn't from a face plant but from a drop to an edge (mainly corners). So edges will always get some protection and that leaves an opportunity for a case. Finally, note that the edge/frame of the phone currently IS the antenna -- in theory they could be placed under the glass but I wouldn't bet on that.

So, a screen on the back as well? Otherwise it wouldn't be "all screen".
No, let's not half-do this:
Make the phone cylindrical, like a soda can!

Imagine the screen wrapping around it seamlessly. Hold it sideways to view a website in portrait view, and you can just rotate the phone to scroll (endlessly if it's that sort of site). Need a case for your phone? Grab a soda koozie! And no need for car phone holders, because you cupholders already.

Let's put the cameras in the top "lid" and add a lever for a dedicated shutter trigger. Then add a shake gesture to iOS to open the camera. Imagine the fun taking pictures at parties.

B.B.B. - Bring Back Bezels!

Why? The iPhone feel like sh*t in the hand...I hate feeling of a metal and glass squared off phone.

Secondly, if your an active person (I am), the phone would be broken daily. I throw them in bags, use them them with wet hands over tile/concrete at work (hospital), they fall out of my scrubs pocket, I use them outside in the shop, in the garden, when trail running, in my backpack when climbing, etc.

Easy and cheap? I have spend an our back and forth to the Apple Store, then waiting on the device, and pay for a replacement... absolutely not.

Unless it's cheaper than a $15 case, no thank you.

Durability > aesthetics.
