and then samsung will now have a phone in 1-2 years without visible frames or bezels just so that they can say FIRSTTTTT
Rather than criticise them for that, perhaps ask why the can do it more quickly than Apple. If they can do it first, and say they're first, then good luck to them. Perhaps Apple could try to be first a little more often these days, like they used to be rather than churning out almost identical phones most years.

This clearly indicates that the project will be delayed until next year, followed by another year, and so on. Haha.

How would you add a case if want/need to use the phone all the way to the edge?
I love the idea of minimum frame, but none seems irrelevant from a protection standpoint

  5. iPhone 4s (2011)
  6. iPhone 5 (2012)

  11. iPhone X (2017)
  12. iPhone XS (2018)
  13. iPhone 11 Pro (2019)
  14. iPhone 12 Pro (2020)
  15. iPhone 13 Pro (2021)

  17. iPhone 15 Pro (2023)
  18. iPhone 16 Pro (2024)

Sorry but what's the point if it becomes obviously impossible to use without a case because the glass is no longer protected? You put on a case and you suddenly lose the curvature and have thick bezels from the case.

Unless they manage to develop a new kind of glass that's somehow 10x more resistant than Ceramic Shield, which I find highly unlikely, this seems like a useless gimmick and false innovation. UNLESS they already have a new glass technology that they wanted to keep for the 20th anniversary phone.
I know I’m in the minority here, but I don’t use a case. I use a vinyl wrap on the back and sides to add a bit of grip, but that’s it.

I take care of my tech, but little drops and scratches happen over the years. I enjoy the sleek form factor of the tech, accepting that some damage is inevitable, rather than put a bulky case on it.

This is all with AppleCare in case of a major accident.

That’s just me, though. You do you. I simply wanted to voice the other side of the coin.

Seconded - and no wrap for me. I've had iPhones since Gen 1 and not broken one yet. I don't even buy AppleCare. I know, I know, I've set myself up for a catastrophic drop tomorrow..! But I do like the design, build quality and feel in the hand, and I'm prepared to take the risks that go with enjoying that without a case.

He's holding it upside-down !, making people feel inadequate, that they don't have the latest and the best is a key tenant of marketing, it drives sales and upgrades, but this kind of rumour and speculation about the future just causes consumer paralysis and is self defeating

What does a vinyl wrap on the back and sides look like and how is it different from a case? (No sarcasm.)

I have this: https://www.ipitaka.com/products/sunset-moonrise-phone-cases?variant=42033055105094 – it weighs nothing, it’s about as thick as nothing, adds grip, looks stunning, and the one problem is that when my brother tried to remove it it wouldn’t budge, so there is a good chance the glass on the back of the phone is shattered into dust and I’ll never find out ;) I also got AppleCare+ because the deal on the phone (iPhone 15 Pro I got about three weeks after the 16 models came out and so the 15 ones became PRACTICALLY OBSOLETE) includes returning it after two years for a partial refund. I intend to not return it and instead re-sell for twice as much.

I wonder if that rounded glass is going to end up being a remake of Samsung’s S9 Edge, only including the top and bottom…

The iPhones since the iPhone X have truly looked amazing. Outside their cases

But real world usage dictates that cases are almost always necessary. I’ve had a case for every single iPhone I’ve had since the 3GS (even that needed a case because the back would become horrendously scratched in a matter of weeks if not covered).

So the case almost always needs to be factored in, which means that beautiful design is hidden for the phones entire functional life.

Maybe Apple should focus on creating some amazing cases. Rather than a work of art iPhone and a relatively cheap, uninspiring case.
Since the original iPhone, I have never used a case. I don’t use a case on my current iPhone 16 Pro Max. The worst issue was dropping my iPhone 6S Plus cracking the screen, but between AppleCare and iCloud it was barely an inconvenience. This isn’t a crazy thing, I just think people are conditioned to use cases, probably grew up with these devices and it’s just their default position on the matter. Never made sense to me.

Multiple reviewers and even companies recommend buying a case.

That broken screen may not have been an inconvenience to you, but add up all those broken screens because of not using a case and the environmental cost is huge.

iPhones are not designed to be rugged without a case. The Ceramic Shield is still quite fragile despite all the advances.

Will be interesting to see how screen protector manufacturers approach this. just sticking a flat piece of glass in the middle wont cut it if the screen is on the edges. As for the corners, imaging the damage from a drop to it? but then again how do you put a case over it?

I suspect the generic manufactures may just go with a partial cover that assumes users will have a case, and Apple teaming up with Belkin or someone else to make a curved one that is installed at the store with an Apple special install device.

I've used cheap ones in the past, but my last one was an Apple installed one and the best I've had. Not cheap, but it hasn't lifted anywhere and feels good to the touch. I would not be surprised for Apple to do the same with the rumored device.

Massive increase in Applecare sales anyone?

Also in the deductible...

If you set aside the money you'd have spent on AppleCare you'd quickly have enough to cover most damage.

I use a case for two reasons:
1. I like the better grip and feel of my case.
2. I traveled a lot for work and toss my phone in my carryon, so the case minimizes scratching as well as offers some protection for the camera bump.

However, it is a personal choice and to each tehir own; and , of course, YMMV.

Imagine believing the Apple of today, churning out virtually the same product year after year, would release something as groundbreaking as this just over 24 months from now.

Lol. Lmao, even.

This is almost too funny. This sounds a lot like the Samsung Edge phones that started in 2014 (and other Android phones after that) and they just not too long ago stopped making.

For the people worrying about the curved edges and using a case, I had a Pixel 2 XL with the curved edges and using a case didn't cause any problems with using the phone. It does make it a lot harder to find a good tempered glass screen protector though.

My mind is still blown at the thought that Apple is finally getting into the curved edge phones after all these years. Samsung made the curved edge phones from 2014 to 2023, I guess Apple figured since Samsung stopped doing them Apple could start now and claim it to be some ground breaking design lol.

Samsung had been doing curved edge phones since 2014. Only difference is Samsung only curved the sides, not the top and bottom also.

Always used an official Apple case & have never purchased AppleCare. Guess I will need to stop buying cases and purchase AppleCare+ (just watch the price of AppleCare rocket!)
