most film remastering is done on them, and i would assume at top configuration, they use banks of the things, also for shake on big productions, i.e. Benjamin button. If people didnt want it, they wouldnt make it.
this is an old article but helps: http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/index.cfm?NewsID=14919

The banks are not going to have a large part of the cost of the $22,000: no Cinema Displays, def. not four hard drives, etc.

I was fooling around in the online apple store, and started customizing a mac pro. I put everything up as high as possible and it came out to 22000. Would u spend 22k on a comp? Haha buuuut it did have 32gb memory

Yeah, but that's Apple pricing. You can start with a base octad and upgrade yourself for about half that. Honest. And it takes less than one day to shop, order, and install everything needed to match it up. So who wouldn't be interested $11,000 for 1 day's worth of work?

I think the $22,000 price-tag is a good example of compound ridiculousness. ;)

It's a testament to the fact that even some pro users are too... er... uninformed to buy their own hard drives and RAM. :p

RAM is slowly becoming more competitive, still expensive but not unbearable as it once was.

Can't disagree on the HDD's though, $300.00 for a 1TB WD Black.

While they made memory prices more reasonable, they did not do this with 4GB DIMMs.

32GB is less than $1,200 from OWC. $6,100 from Apple.

I think they use them for large movie rendering like Transformers.

They do that here...

I could spend $22,000 on a Mac Pro but I wouldn't give most of the money to Apple. ($7,000)
I would use Apple's store to get a Quadro FX 4800 or maybe I'd just get another GTX 285. ($1,800)
I'd add 32GB of memory from a third party ventor (OWC). ($1,180)
I'd probably add 4 big SSDs. ($4,000)
2 more 30" monitors (Maybe NEC). ($4,400)
I could use 2 thousand just to update some of my applications. ($2,000)
Add another 2 grand worth of applications ($2,000)
.

Programming or Video Production. Although they may not need all of the Server Options ;)

programming? No. Programming doesn't need much power at all you're basically just using Microsoft Word (not really, but basically) and some debugger tools. None of a programmers workflow needs much more than a macbook and a big ass screen.

As for video productions I guess you would really only see use out of that machine's parts when you're rendering and exporting.

If I can get a job next year (and I don't buy anything else), I'll get the following:

1x 2.93 GHz eight-core Mac Pro

4x nVidia GeForce GT120

4x 1 TB HDDs (from OWC)

The largest amount of RAM to support triple channel (I've been too lazy to figure this out).

3x Dell Ultrasharp 2408 WFP

FCS

Logic Studio

Cinema 4D

I'd use this to make a feature-length animated movie.

It should cost just under $11,000.

Maybe the year after that I'll get an Xserve and some Fibre channel equipment.

EDIT: Forgot to add kick-ass 7.1 surround sound. Onkyo SKS-HT750 speakers and Harman/Kardon AVR 254 receiver. I'm a bit of an audiophile.

Revised total is just under $12,000.

I look forward to watching it in 2028.

Am I missing something? You only need two cards to drive those monitors, and even putting one on each would leave you a wasted card.

It leaves room for expansion. And by the time I get it, SL will be (almost) bug free so the leftover GPU can be used by Open CL.

Plus, I like having a ton of monitors. I want to get six eventually, but that'll take up a ton space and cost a fortune.

You'll never see it. It is more of a hobby thing, really. I want to make a movie about the summer and what my friends do over their vacation.

It's not going to be the greatest thing, but I hope for a great amount of detail.

I say feature length because it will be at least 1 hour 45 minutes, about as long as many movies.

:D You've never made an animated film have you? ;)

60 seconds is an achievement trust me. Most people on their own just make a few frames. Unless you're prepared to put in 5 years of your spare time into it you wouldn't get more than 5 mins.

But good luck! :D

No, I haven't, but I like challenges and this looks like a fun one. If I decide it'll take too long, I'll do something else.

hehe

I'm only teasing.

As a guide it takes Pixar 3 years and about 300 people to make a 1.45h film.

Maybe I should revise my idea then.

Write the screenplay and send it to whoever you send that stuff to.

But I'd still get the stuff in my list. I could put it all to good use.
