Kuo: 'iPhone SE 2' to Feature Improved Antenna Design, Production Will Begin in Early 2020

The so-called iPhone SE 2 will be equipped with an LCP aka liquid crystal polymer antenna design for improved wireless transmission, according to noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

In a research note with TF International Securities today, viewed by MacRumors, Kuo said Career Technologies and Murata Manufacturing will begin supplying Apple with antenna components for the iPhone SE 2 in early 2020, in time for the device to launch by the end of the first quarter.

In previous research notes, Kuo said the iPhone SE 2 will have a similar design as the iPhone 8, including a 4.7-inch display and a Touch ID home button, but with a faster A13 Bionic chip and 3GB of RAM. He also expects the device to have 64GB and 128GB storage options and come in Space Gray, Silver, and Red.

Like the iPhone 11 lineup, the iPhone SE 2 is expected to ship without 3D Touch, which Apple has replaced with a software-based Haptic Touch solution. Kuo predicts the device will start at $399 in the United States.

It is worth noting that iPhone SE 2 might not be the final name of the device, with iPhone 8s and iPhone 9 speculated as other possibilities. With a larger 4.7-inch display, the device would certainly not be as portable as the original iPhone SE, which has disappointed some fans of the original device.

If it is not the same size as SE and similar in size as a 8 then it should be named 8S. I can’t see it being named 9 since 11 is already out. I am still waiting to see which modem it will come with and so far the pricing is looking good.

It’s odd everyone here is complaining about size. I know quite a few people with the se, and they all bought it for price.

It could get called an 8se which would indicate that it's not just an iterative improvement on the 8 (which has an A11 CPU). Adding 3Gb of RAM and using the A13 CPU on a body that could be priced similarly to the existing 8 makes me a little bit concerned about the fate of the 8 Plus which would look very much like a white elephant in the face of an 8se from below and the Xr from above.

If they have indeed stripped out 3D Touch from this phone then it can't simply be a rehash of the 8 body style and surely an even bigger reason for just flat out discontinuing the 8 Plus as the last remaining phone in the lineup with 3D Touch.

Should go with iPhone 9 on this, make sure the camera is upgraded as well (just like they did with the SE update back at the time). It'll probably use the 11's Intel (now Apple) modem (which I have to say has given me my bar back at work that was lost with the original Intel modems - 8 & Xr).
