Do people not remember the gradient issue on ALMOST ALL 24" iMac screens?

I do.

I sent two back to apple and asked for my money back.

Still no 'fix' or acknowledgement from Apple to this day.

I will not buy another iMac until reports flow in of perfect screens.

I honestly think they are buying defective screens for cheap, why do you think they're selling such good panels for the price of the iMac.

Sounds veeery plausible to me.

The new Mac Pros will be out soon. And there will be pro displays too, no doubt.
At that point, those who demand extra quality will be able to buy it, at the price it takes to get it.
In the meantime, the consumer-level iMac will continue to fill its niche admirably, for those who want to pay less and have all-in-one convenience.
I'm amazed that those who talk so much about professional image quality are focusing so much on a computer aimed at bedrooms or living rooms, rather than professional studios. In a work environment, one is likelier to see the iMac on the desk of the accountant, salesperson or secretary, rather than the Creative Director.
That such a domestic or office machine is even being considered by imaging pros as an alternative is a testament to the high standards the iMac has attained. But of course, in the current economy, we must not be too critical of those who take the cheap option, desperately hoping to get professional quality from a value-packed consumer device.

Unsure

Hey everyone,

My imac is from the 45 week batch, I am really not sure if I am facing the problem at the right corner of my screen, or am I just paranoid from reading everyones post.

Is there a more specific test I can do to determine the problem.

Thanks.

Your statement about what type of people should be using these computers is pretty narrow minded and arrogant. I know plenty of professionals who use imacs, myself included. These are very powerful and capable machines. Getting one that works as advertised is all people want from Apple. A defect such as the yellow tint shouldn't be something consumers should put up with.

According to your logic its our fault for only spending around 2k on a secretary's rig instead of whatever it is you have on your private island :p ?

Lets say I spend $35 on a steak I order medium rare but it comes to me well done. Should I have ordered the more expensive steak?

Not at all. I use an iMac professionally. I even work closely every day with top photographers and art directors at many top studios. But my own role is writing and scripting.
Nevertheless, while I don't need finer image reproduction than the iMac offers me, not one of the MANY graphic-intensive, top rank imaging professionals I work with uses an iMac at his workstation. It wouldn't enter their heads. But I know for a fact that at least a couple of them have iMacs at home, for day-to-day use. And I know an audio editor who uses iMacs in his superbly equipped studio. But he's not an imaging pro. He isn't after something the iMac isn't.

So I guess that it's too much for the consumer to expect their screen to show white as white and that they should readily accept that a 1/3 of their screen will actually show white with a yellow hue. No one is expecting a Grade 1 monitor however I have an array of monitors at my work ranging in price between £200 (cheap general office screen) to £18000 (Grade 1 HD Broadcast monitor) and they all manage to display white as white with better colour consistency. Remember this is the screen Apple tout as "...a perfect picture with superb color consistency and no loss of detail".

Now, Sir Cecil, remind me, you swapped your first iMac due to HDD noise and then swapped your second iMac due to the yellow hue. However, since you got sorted it seems you believe that everyone else's problems are either imagined, blown out of proportion, or they expect too much whilst your own issues were completely valid. It's a shame that you pursue this "I'm alright jack" attitude as some of your posts are genuinely helpful and I've even supported some of your more controversial comments but I, like several other regulars on this forum (you've been picked up on this over several threads), find your attitude to others perceived issues rather un-solidarity like.

Just one final point, whilst high end media professionals would generally opt for Mac Pro's, the iMac is most definitely also aimed at the Prosumer market who should expect a screen to have better colour consistency than they are currently being offered by the iMac.

I remember it too. I sent three 24" iMacs back and the fourth one also had the gradient.

Actually, it's more of a "You're alright Jack" attitude. I tell people to make up their OWN minds and if they see no problems, then they are fine.
I suggest they note the concerns and advice of those with genuine problems, but ignore the ravings of the zealots who are here with their own agenda, to whip up anti-Apple hysteria.
It's indicative of the mentality here that if twenty people of dubious intent rant that nobody should buy an iMac and that all the computers are faulty, that meets with nods of approval and sends shivers of fear through the community, with hundreds of people too scared to order.
But if someone dares say that's not the case and there ARE plenty of good machines out there and "I have one", that's met with "prove it!" or deemed as showing not enough sympathy or "I'm alright Jack."
So be it. No wonder so many see this site as a shrine to the insecure and immature.

Sir Cecil, you make some good points, the whole "Should I buy an iMac, I'm Scared" type threads are laughable. Unfortunately, sometimes in pushing your point, you can come over as dismissive of users who do have genuine issues.

I'm no professional, but I really do not like the fact that a white wallpaper/webpage looks aged/smoke damaged for 1/3 of my screen - I doubt many would.

My god, are people still arguing with Cecil about this??? This crap has taken up like HALF of this thread. This argument has been had, and won (and not by Cecil), numerous times already. We don't need to read it again.

Back order?

Got a phone call from Apple, telling me that my iMac will be delayed for an week.
The reason he called; some parts where out of stock. (It was on priority order due to replacement)

Why do I reply in this thread?
I'm swapping the 2nd iMac because of the yellow thinge... and I’m wondering; has the delay something to do with a new batch of panels….

Has someone else got a call?

Could be, but what parts was he speaking of? Did you order a plain iMac or some extra's like memory, HD?

he couldn’t tell me... :-(
asked him why..
He only tolled me that a part was in backorder….
He knew nothing else… :-(

order:

27" i7 8GB / 1 TB hd
(3th machine)

So it could be memory….

I got my brand new iMac yesterday and it has the tinge. 27" i7 week 53. dammit! I'm trying to decide if I can live with it... I think I might wait until I hear of a week that has better screens. I thought the reason why I had to wait two weeks before I got it was because they were fixing the issue? *facepalm*

iMac

Yesterday, I went to BestBuy and wanted to buy 27" iMac but it's sold out. It's not available in stock. But the co worker told me that there will be a new model of iMac. He suggests that it may be a little more bigger. Probably, 32". Do you know? So I guess I will have to wait for the new model.

He is talking a load of rubbish :D

Is there anybody who has exchanged their iMac and received a new one back without the yellow tinge? If not, it seems likely that the majority of the iMac have this problem.

Did you miss the half-a-million posts on here that have already answered this question?

'Sir Civility' strikes again.

Why not just answer his question... or better yet, not at all.

Don't YOU have a story to tell... haven't you claimed to have received an iMac replacement without the yellow tinge, albeit, refusing to show pics, of course.

(no need to respond - just showing your hypocrisy.)

My iMac has helped make me $3000+ on an advertising project over the last three days alone. I must say, it's the GREEN tinge of those dollar bills that I prefer to look for, rather than waste my time trying to photograph a yellow one that doesn't exist on my machine.
What are you doing with your computer today?

Nobody said you have to take the picture on your work time. You waste a TON of time on here, you mean to say you couldn't snap a picture during your MacRumors Forum time?

If you made over $3000 in 3 days, imagine how much more you could make if you didn't spend hours of your day antagonizing people on an internet forum!

Sir Cecil, whilst you may have a small point regarding the photos, why not do people the courtesy they afforded you when you had issues with your first two iMacs? Your comments are just inflammatory, crass, vulgar and TBH you come over as a prize class d*c$head.
