yep. that's what I thought. Now, how could you get sound off the 360 or PS3? Would you have to use a receiver? See, I just have computer speakers, so I'm guessing that won't work.

If you could some how go optical out of the ps3, into the optical input of the imac, and use the internal speakers, or external speakers via 1/8 jack, then you would be set...I just don't know if that is possible. If not then getting a receiver is the only option.

it should be here by the end of the week ... You guys have ur fingers crossed!?! I'm the one that ordered not even really needing it or knowing if it worked for sure lol... It's just something I've wanted for so long... If it works I get to sell some stuff.. yay!!!

Im not even kidding, I would probably buy one on the spot if this was possible. P3S means I can finally watch Blu ray and play my favorite games on my macs awesome screen.

I'm thinking of doing exactly this for the bedroom.

Does anyone have a link to the Belkin dongle that seems to be mentioned on a lot of pages, but not actually linked to?

This will be the deal clincher on whether or not I buy a new i7 iMac - if the video input works well, I'm sold. :)

Is my logic right?

I just bought a new receiver and everything is conencted via HDMI. The one HDMI out is connected to a DVI/VGA-HDMI converter and that is plugged into the DisplayPort converter(or just HDMI/DP). Sounds like it can work. Right?

well i just ordered it as well as a mini displayport to hdmi... so unless someone beats me to it ..i guess ill be the guinea pig

the thing is..it has to be a mini-dp to hdmi female for it to work..if they even make those..

Oh man if this works with a PS3 and your able to play games and watch blu-rays... damn that would be awesome.

or how about one of those Kanex dongles engadget posted a while back.

basically has a female hdmi on one end, and then minidisplayport and optical audio on the other. (the whole thing is powered via a usb plug)

I assume it was conceived for data to go the other way (mini DP out from macs) to an HDMI source, but electronically, wouldnt it be the same for the data to flow in the other direction?

obviously, there are no distinctions between HDMI-IN cables and HDMI-OUT cables... just depends where you plug those babies in.

I started this thread for the reason a lot of you have already mentioned - having decent input which I could play my Xbox through would be another 27" iMac sold!

I recently bought a 24" Dell display because my current iMac can't do video in - the fact that I'd be able to sell that (on top of my current iMac) - means getting a new one would be really feasible!

So far we're thinking it will work with a passive adaptor but we'll have no sound - right? Anyone know if there's likely to be any lag, 'cus if we have to connect audio and video separately, then it'd be a shame if audio reached my ears before the image reached my eyes.

It would need to be a female hdmi to a male display port right?

I'm really curious about this as well, as well as if also works as an hdcp compatible monitor so I could hook a bluray player into it.

I never ever considered buying an imac because I hated the idea of trashing the display once I decided to upgrade.

Curious how the switching works though, does it use a large amount of cpu/gpu resources as an input? I enjoy rendering and exporting in the background while watching a movie and would hate for the computer to slow down because I'm using the monitor as an input.

I guess we need to wait for Apple/Others to release the adapters and see what comes out, maybe something like a hdmi->displayport with an audio splitter will come out :)

Let's cross our fingers, i'm really hoping i can use the screen with my xbox, i would save a lot of space!

US, UK

It's not a dongle though... ;)

i hear ya! would be great if this works out...come on :apple: make it happen!

hoping that one of the gadget websites (who took delivery yesterday) will do a test on this function.

I've just had a chat with an online Apple representative, here's how it went:

You are chatting with Linda, an Apple Expert
Linda: Hi, my name is Linda. Welcome to Apple!
Me: Hello
Linda: How may I help you?
Me: Could I connect my Xbox 360 to one of the new 27" iMacs and use it to play games?
Linda: I am happy to help.
Linda: We do have a product called Elgato that will allow you to connect the game system to the iMac.
Linda: I can get you the link to do so.
Me: Right, I'm aware of that, as I know it's an option for my current mac.
However, the new 27" iMac says it supports video INPUT, as well as output?
Linda: That would be input via the mini display port.
Linda: The mini display port is available on our notebooks.
Me: Is there anyway to convert the HDMI out on my Xbox to the Mini Display Port format?
Linda: The input would be only for devices what have a mini display port.
Linda: Let me see if there is an adapter.
Me: It says on the Apple website: "supports input from external DisplayPort sources (requires cables and adapters, sold separately)"
Linda: I am looking to see if there is an adapter currently available.
Linda: Currently we offer a mini display port to mini display port cable.
Me: What about this? http://store.apple.com/uk/product/TX175ZM/A?mco=MTI1Mjc0Nzg
Linda: Thanks for waiting. I'll be right with you.
Me: Sure.
Linda: That is for use on the prior models for output from a mini display port to HDMI on a TV or display.
Linda: It is also used on our notebooks to output to a TV.
Me: So it won't send signals the other way?
Linda: The input on the new 27 inch iMac is for devices that have a mini display port and we offer a mini display port to mini display port cable to do so.
Me: So no cable exists to get my HDMI cable to convert to a Mini Display Port one?
Linda: The input is for devices with a mini display port.
Me: So is it true that there's no way to get a HDMI source to display through the new iMac?
Linda: The input is minidisplay to minidisplay and we offer a cable to do so.
Me: So are you saying it can't be done? I just want a simple yes or no? Whether it can or not determines whether I purchase one so I really need to know for sure.
Linda: The input is mini display to minidisplay, there is not an adapter to convert HDMI to input to mini display.
Me: Will Apple release such a cable?
Linda: We are not able to speculate on the future.
Linda: The input is designed for minidisplay to minidisplay.
Me: That's a shame, I'm sure a lot of people would have loved the benefit of using it as an external display too - for non-apple products.
Linda: May I help with any other product or order questions before you proceed?
So basically, you do need a powered adaptor, not good news :(

not overly great news but to be fair i would not hold much weight to what they say they are given limit training past the basic questions plus these are still new; i am waiting for someone to test this out themselves.
