I too have this issue. New i5. Keeping the thread alive until a fix shows up. Is there a good way we can pass this issue along to Apple so they're definitely aware of it?

I do have a 4 port usb hub attached, and an external usb 2.0 HDD, so I'll try with them unplugged, but still, that's no solution, I shouldn't have to worry about unplugging/replugging peripherals every time I wake from sleep...

Otherwise, I like my new 27!

Try without the hub, as you said. And it's really not that unusual. Some hubs are better than others at letting the system go to sleep. Which model/brand is it?

Also, with all of my USB peripherals unplugged, imac woke from sleep ok, both is osx and in win7 , using wireless kb and magic mouse. That was only after a few minutes of sleep though, not an overnight wait..

I've experienced the same issue, last night. I'll watch out for this and maybe reinstall (I've got Time Machine).

UPDATE: experienced no repeat issues, not since 17 March. So, this only happened once, which is very odd. Intermittent issues are the hardest to troubleshoot, in my experience. I currently have a LaCie 750GB drive plugged in, along with an HP Deskjet F4240 AIO printer.

20" iMac Intel (Mid 2007) won't wake

I have a similar problem. We have a lab of 16 20" iMac Intel (Mid 2007) running 10.5.8. All the Macs in the building are clones of the same OS and app image and I am only having trouble in this lab so I am pretty sure it is model specific. The problem appears to be not awaking from sleep. You walk up to a machine it appears to be shut down, if you put your ear to the machine you can hear it is on. The only way I have found to deal with the problem is to hold the start button down until you hear it shut off then restart.

After a few weeks of using my i7, it died the day before yesterday completely after I put it into sleep. It never woke up since then. I tried all the methods to wake it up and called Apple care. They suggested me to check in Apple retail store. I took this beast to the store and they simply said there's something wrong with the power supply and nothing they could help about it except to fix it or replace it. I am not sure I am the only one here has this issue since lot of people after rebooting the issue's gone. Could that be a software problem?

My i7 started doing the same thing and the only solution seemed to be holding down the start button to 'force quit' and then starting from scratch.
I concluded that it wasn't really sleeping at all. If I listened intently there was some noise in machine, though the mouse, keyboard and screen were off. I was just assuming it was asleep, while in fact, it was doing as it was told but had not completed the process. I traced the problem to a 'Kensington' hub, it only did this when this was connected. Hope this helps someone else.

I know someone who had a similar problem with the i7, but not after sleep. She was watching a DVD movie when the machine suddenly went dead. Completely off, suddenly without warning, as if the plug had been pulled out. Nothing would get it going again and she was told by Apple to send it back and get a replacement. And she didn't get the DVD back.

Had the same issue with my i7 iMac.... Took it in to the local Apple Store. I'm not too sure if they knew what the real issue was, but they ended up replacing BOTH the logic board AND the power supply.... Also, I noticed that they must have run a system update because my machine came back with 10.6.3 (went in 10.6.2)

They did not have to format my hard drive and all my original data was fully in tact.... I don't know which of the 3 variables made the difference, but nevertheless the combination did solve the problem (wakes from sleep within seconds)

I was happy to see an update for iMac 27'' from Apple, concerning the screen that was not "waking up" after a sleep, but soooooo disappointed after I installed it to see that the problem was not solved !!!

I don't see an other option that having it exchanged but as many pointed it out, what worse iMac will I get ??

I love my iMac 27 i5, but this small bug annoys me so much !!!

Hasn't happened to me since the one time and hasn't happened at all since the update.

I really don't think the wakeup issue has to do with hardware either, otherwise I'd still be having issues.

Are you guys sure it isn't something like 3rd party apps? I'm running basically drybones here (nothing installed software-wise but typical FF and a few widgets).

Same problem with my i7, received 4/19. Happened every time. Last night, I unplugged my USB hub and, hey presto!, problem solved.

Lots of people have suggested this fix. My question: does anyone know of a hub that WON'T cause the problem, or at least hasn't done so.

When I experienced the issue, I didn't have a USB hub installed. I did have USB equipment plugged into the iMac but it wasn't a hub (had a La Cie drive connected to it, an iPhone sync cable, and an HP AIW Deskjet). All of those are still plugged into the machine.

I have a 7-port hub from D-Link DUB-H7 for my 27", i5.
It works flawlessly and the iMac wakes up every time time I want it to ;)

Neither do I have a USB hub plugged in... Only iPhone USB cable, firewire MyBook Hard Drive (switched off all the time) and USB keyboard... Happens every 3-4 times...

Er, never mind. The problem is back. Definitely sure it is only the screen that isn't waking. I can hear various things reacting to input.

I'm so, so sad about this. Any news?

Many sleep related problems

Tonight my screen saver kicked in!! - this should be impossible because, as it says in system preferences, 'the display will sleep before your screen saver activates'! This is the first time I have seen this and it was just after a reboot with zero apps open.
Also I have been having problems where the mac would wake up and show the password dialog but I couldn't type anything in. I tried a normal USB mouse and wired keyboard but it wouldn't respond. I didn't have to force a shutdown though, I could always get around it by briefly pushing the power button to make it go back to sleep and then waking it again with the power button (not the keyboard).

I have the 3.06GHZ Core 2 Duo 27" iMac

I too recently bought a iMac 27 Quad, and the last few days I had a hard time getting it back up from sleep.

Yes I have a Belkin USB hub, but I unplugged it and it did not make a difference. I even plugged in a USB keyboard and it still would not wake. I finally got it to wake by pushing the power button to restart.

BUT: I noticed that it happened mostly when I pushed the power button to make it go to sleep. I stopped doing that and now I am letting it go to sleep all by itself, and I have not had any more problems, yet. Knock on wood!

Thought it might make a difference for some of you people also. I did NOT do any resetting of anything, and it seems to work correctly now, without using the power button to put it to sleep.

I wish it would solve the problem, but on my side, I put it on sleep thru the remote control or just by letting it go on sleep by itself... Same result ! One out of every other time it doesn't wake up....

Hi all

Thought I would share my experience. Bought a 27in QC i7 model yesterday, and have run into a major problem already. It is suddenly refusing to boot at all, after less than 24 hours of use. All I'm seeing is the white screen with the Apple logo and the spinner (with nothing plugged into the back I should add).

I know this thread is specifically to do with the mac booting from sleep, but I have a feeling we are all suffering from a similar problem.

I'm not sure what I should do to remedy the problem, the nearest Apple Store to me is a 2 hour drive. All in all I'm very unimpressed, and if people are saying replacement machines are doing the same, there seems to be nothing anyone can do until Apple finally admits that this is a widespread problem.

Has anyone run into a definitive solution?

Same issue here. I just tried setting computer sleep to Never. Display sleep is set at 10 minutes. Needed 2 presses of the power button to wake it. I thought it was computer sleep related, but I guess it's monitor sleep.

Update: I've set the Energy Saving for longer times, and I'm trying to manually put the system to sleep when I leave it (command under Apple pull down menu). I did that just now, and when I came back it woke properly. But more importantly, the back of the machine was MUCH cooler than when I let it go to sleep by itself. I'm starting to think that unless I issue the command, the computer is never going to sleep. It's just stuck in monitor sleep, and it has intermittent trouble waking from that.

Purchased a new 27" iMac i5 this past Thursday and have already experienced my iMac refusing to wake up from sleep three times. No response to any keyboard or mouse input. I have no peripherals connected. Had to use the power button to restart it. Once restarted it comes up fine, but this is a very annoying issue.

One thing to note... My iMac came with OS X 10.6.2 installed and I upgraded it to OS X 10.6.3. Later tonight I will try a fresh install of OS X 10.6.3 from scratch. This seems to have worked for several folks.

It would be interesting to know how many folks are experiencing this issue.

Update: I was just sitting in my office working on my MacBook and my new iMac was running on the desk next to me. I had just used the browser on it and it had not been idle for more than 5-7 minuted when I heard a "click" and it turned off hard. My sleep is set to 30 minutes, so it was not sleep kicking in.

I tried several combinations of keyboard entries and mouse movements to no avail. Then I tried the power button. One push, two pushes, holding it down for 10 seconds... No luck. Then I unplugged it for 30 seconds and plugged it back in and hit the power button and it started.

Spontaneous shutdowns are usually indicative of a hardware issue. Particularly the power supply, but I've got a hunch I want to test. I'm wondering if perhaps I have an issue with my battery backup / surge protector.

If my battery backup / surge protector is not providing clean or adequate current that could be the issue. Perhaps these new iMacs have very finicky power supplies. I'm going to take a chance and plug my iMac directly into my wall socket and see how long I can go without a spontaneous shutdown.

I'll let everyone know how it goes. Fingers-crossed.
