That's an incredible inelegant solution though, and one I don't think Apple would ever implement.
I think they'd rather release another 6K 60Hz display with more refined mini-LED technology than have users plug in with two connectors.

But never say never... 6K 120Hz is technically possible with the highest bandwidth DisplayPort 2.0 as well, as it's just about 74Gbps at 8-bit pixel colour depth. DisplayPort 2.0 – which is based on Thunderbolt 3 – supports up to 80Gbps. Maybe Apple will let users choose. Maybe they'll compromise and go for 90Hz, which is still a substantial improvement on 60Hz, while requiring almost 20Gbps less bandwidth at 8-bit colour depth, while still allowing for 10-bit colour and remaining DP2.0-compatible.

Or maybe this is all just a pipe dream, and the bandwidth limitations are just too much for Apple to consider a 5K or 6K >60Hz display for the time being, and Ross Young is wrong about this one. I hope he's not, as I really want that 5K mini -LED ProMotion display, but he could be.
You’re probably right about the elegance of it, but then I look at my old Apple Thunderbolt Display with 3 permanently attached cables (2 of which connect to the device), and I can’t help but think there’s a precedent there for something like this. As inelegant as it might be.

My Studio Display finally arrived after a 2.5 month wait. The 16” M1 Pro beating it by 11 days. What a wonderful display. I hear all the criticism about refresh rate and price. The sound is superb and the finish and general quality is outstanding. I agree the camera could be better but it’s less of an issue for me. Compared to the LG 27” it’s certainly value for money considering the quality.

Given the long waiting times for this display, I’d be surprised if Apple launches a “Pro” model this year. I tend to agree it will more realistically be aimed as a smaller XDR display for people preferring a two monitor setup.

One small issue that Apple can fix is that the grips below the stand don’t offer enough friction and the monitor slides too readily. I overcame them with small softer rubber feet that cured the problem. I was lucky to have some lying around. It only required three tiny (30mm x 2mm) that are the same thickness as those below the stand.

So, according to well-respected display analyst Ross Young this will come in the next 2 weeks

I'm considering this over the ASD - but I can imagine this replacing or being in the same price region as the Pro Display XDR.

Given how damned expensive they are (and I need two [VESA only]), there's a lot of food for thought.

The studio display was already a massive reach for me on price. No way I can afford an external pro motion display from apple. I also still think it’s not coming any time soon.

I agree, for what you get, it's not attractively priced - I was hovering on buying it early this morning, but I need to be realistic: my two LG Ultrafines (4k) are currently doing their job well. I will probably want to move to 5k at some point, but at the price point, it's not attractive right now.

Make that 2024.

Doubt Apple is going to piss off new display owners within a year.

Two years is forgivable for a bigger leap forward.
I don't think Apple give a damn about "pissing off new display owners" lol
The reason for the delay is manufacturing capability + parts supply. They can barely keep up with the Studio Display, which is mostly made from pre-existing parts re-arranged into a new product.
