TBH, Studio display is expensive since it's just another 5K display and had been used a while ago. They didnt even show its contrast ratio. What makes it so special to sell it at $1500 instead of $1000?

Metal chasis, A13 chip, 12MP camera, likely impressive speakers, and Apple polish with associated tax.

The display is indeed expensive, but the only competition is the LG 5K which is $1,299 I believe. Compared to that display, this one is much nicer. It's cheaper than I thought, but still more than it probably should be, but look at Apple's 14" laptop staring at $1,999?

If you consider that the Thunderbolt Display sold for $999 about 10 years, then $1,699 today isn't that unexpected.

Yeah. And the Thunderbolt Display actually was a pretty good deal compared to previous Apple displays. I remember drooling over the 2004 30” Cinema Display, which launched at $3,299. Even the 23” display was $2k. Nevermind what 2004 money would be worth today.

From the announcement of the original Cinema Displays apple released in 2004:

Pricing & Availability
The 20-inch Apple Cinema Display and 23-inch Apple Cinema HD Display will be available in July, and the 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Display will be available in August, through the Apple Store® (www.apple.com), at Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers for a suggested retail price of $1,299 (US), $1,999 (US) and $3,299 (US), respectively.

Edit… a quick look at 2004 vs now (March 2022), that $3,299 would be just about $5k. oi.

They came down from the stratosphere in price a couple of years later.

I bought my 30" Cinema HD Display in 2006 for $2,249. I'm still using it (with my Mid 2010 Mac Pro) as I type this. Greatest monitor ever. When people say "Why would anyone buy a large monitor" I question their sanity. I'd give anything to be able to afford the Pro HDR 6K. I wish this Studio Display model had a larger big brother.

Ah, can you imagine prices coming down on a product like that today? Different times huh? I’m with you. I would love to see a sub $3000 32” 6k “Studio Display Max” or something like that.

The price dropped even more shortly after I bought it! ? It went down to $1,999 by 2007 ...

I'd love to see that sub-$3,000 32" 6K "Studio Display Max" myself! Only thing I've seen like it is a Dell Refurbished UltraSharp 32 inch Monitor with PremierColor - UP3221Q (4K not 6K, obvs.) for $2,900 ... and the "90-Day Warranty" scares me away immediately.

The most frustrating is for those waiting an 27" iMac as the quiet removal gives no hint as to whether a replacement is coming. The Studio display does appear to just be the iMac 5K display in a new housing ( not sure if that's why they've removed the iMac from the website as they're diverting production to the Studio Display), but costing more than the 27" iMac!
In the keynote Apple said there's only one more M1 Mac coming, the Mac Pro.

So it appears like a 27" iMac is as dead as fried chicken, my friend.

Also, the M1 Mac mini and the Studio Display are basically the 24" iMac with a bigger screen and the advantage of not having to throw out the baby with the bathwater when things fail.

Yes technically it‘s possible, but that’s not really a caveat if it affects a total of nobody. For all intents and purposes you can’t notice it at all.

The tests show that you definitely can notice it in some situations. What you are arguing is that those situations are irrelevant, which is a perfectly valid opinion but not something that I would claim as objective fact.

So you demand that it should cost the same as the inferior LG Ultrafine 5k?
Appart the front camera and speakers, and considering LG has height adjustment built in, I’m having a hard time to justify 2000€ for this Studio Display.
I need a screen to look at, not to hear from or to be seen from…😔

I completely agree. If you use headphones while working and you don‘t need a webcam there‘s little to justify the hefty price premium over the LG function-wise.
It‘s been 6 years and all that Apple really could improve over the LG was the speakers and the cam. Oh and 100 nits - great.

What surprises me most about this thread is people arguing that we will not see the release of another Apple monitor so soon. Another similar situation comes to mind..

Apple released the v.2 of the AirPods in March 2019, and then released the AidPod Pro's just a few months later in October 2019.

I'm sure there's lots more examples that the Apple history experts out there have, but I think releasing another related product this quickly is hardly something new - as long as Apple sees it as "different".

“If you don’t need the extra stuff the price isn’t justified.”

Yes, that’s how the market works. Don’t buy a mansion if all you need is 3 rooms.

I can only hope for a larger display 32" with better specs than the Studio display but at a lower price than the current XDR.
27" Studio Display 5k $1600
32" baby XDR 6K $2500
34" XDR 7K $4000
Stand and nano at the current prices of the studio display ($400/$300)

I mean, maybe, it’s hard to predict apple’s strategy, but after not having any displays for so long, that space is now getting crowded. The studio is already so much more expensive than admittedly lower quality/resolution 4K displays, now they’re going to have another tier at what? 2500? It seems like a solution without a problem.

I've pushed my Studio Display order out to mid-May by cancelling / re-ordering. That way I'll still be in my return period if a new Pro display is announced at WWDC (using the 28-day return policy hack).

That's the same thing some people were saying about the Studio display that was just a rumor at the time and is for sale in the Apple store today
Yes - but the gap between rumour and shipping product can be very long. There have been intermittent rumours about a replacement for the Apple Thunderbolt Display since it was discontinued in 2016, and they started to become a bit more concrete more than a year before the Studio Display was announced.

So regular < studio < pro? I'm not sure what pro means anymore because of iPad Pro and iPhone Pro. Those are toys compared to Mac Pro
Marketing 101 man.

When you put high priced items to the right it makes the standard ones look like better deals.

Apple executed this flawlessly with the iPhone 11. It was the year they introduced the Pro and made what was previously the “cheap phone” XR into their main line.

Not sure which direction to go with this. I was almost settled on the Studio 5K for photo editing/text and a dell high refresh low-res for podcast viewing. Two things that are shaking those plans up are this rumor of a studio pro and the release of the alienware qd-oled. Both have 120hz or greater refresh. Alienware probably not a good choice for photos since it's 1800R curved but it's a bit overboard for watching podcasts. **explodes**
