As long as the refresh has 120hz I'm sold. I can never go back to 60hz.
newest thunderbolt doesn't offer enough bandwidth for 5k 120 hz. There is actually no connection in existence right now that can support that as a single cable.

Not true. DisplayPort 2.0 supports a maximum of 80Gbps, but... physically, it's the exact same as Thunderbolt 3. It's literally repurposed Thunderbolt 3.

TB3 (and 4) supports bi-directional 40Gbps, using 4 x 20Gbps lanes - 2 out, 2 in. DisplayPort 2.0 flips the 2 in lanes and repurposes them as 2 out lanes, giving you 80Gbps bandwidth to a display.

USB4 (also just a repurposed Thunderbolt 3) and Thunderbolt 4 both support DisplayPort 2.0 Alt Mode.

5K 120Hz bandwidth is about 53Gbps. So there is plenty of bandwidth using 1 cable, should Apple want to build a 5K 120Hz monitor.

It's been observed that the innards of the studio display are a bit weird, particularly the presence of 64GB ram and A13 are overkill for a monitor alone. Yet it's been raised that leaks of this type, of production runs in-process, are rarely wrong. But it's also a legit criticism that Apple doesn't release upgrades for a product within 1 year let alone 6 months of releasing a product.

Doesn't it make more sense then that this rumored panel is destined for a summer release of an iMac Pro?

An A13 wouldn’t be useful for an iMac Pro.

The Studio Display basically has the internals of an old iPhone 11 in it, one of the benefits being that stuff like Center Stage is already built for iOS.

Why is the display market just trash?

I expect this to replace the Pro Display XDR, but the current Studio Display is just overpriced for what it is.

Why is the display market just trash?

The demand just isn't there. Not enough people care.

Something like 80% of people who want an external display really just want one in the 20-24-inch range and don't care about high DPI.

Then there's maybe 10% who want it to play games. High DPI, if anything, is a bad idea for them as it just needlessly drives up computation cost in fine detail that they won't be able to discern anyway. Instead, they want high framerate.

Then perhaps another 5% want a big display (often from a weird notion that they can read better on it?) and/or curved one. At those sizes, high DPI often isn't even practical at all due to high bandwidth requirements.

That leaves a small slice of the market, and that alone isn't going to drive prices down. What Apple and/or Microsoft should've done years ago is entice creation of such displays. Apple kind of went there by partnering with LG, but that clearly wasn't enough. Perhaps some kind of logo/certification program and promotion stuff would've helped.

I can only hope for a larger display 32" with better specs than the Studio display but at a lower price than the current XDR.
27" Studio Display 5k $1600
32" baby XDR 6K $2500
34" XDR 7K $4000
Stand and nano at the current prices of the studio display ($400/$300)

after read this thread I'll hold my studio display purchase and wait to june, a 32 baby XDR for $2500 sounds good to me ?

No mention of Mac Pro at yesterday's event either, which Apple has alluded is still coming. Guess we'll see what fall brings!

I knew this display wouldn't make it in June...it totally doesn't make sense to release another display so soon after the Studio Display...Apple, in their history of releasing hardware, never released hardware so close to each other.

Not to mention how backed up Studio Display orders are!

more delayed than fake.

I just want wait to see if Apple release a 32, less expensive than the actual.
the point of the new is exactly that the new display would be released in June. It's easy to predict they're updating MacBook Pro next year, but to name specific timeline is the news here.

I am waiting for a new 32 affordable monitor from Apple too. But given their recent pricing strategy, it's unlikely that they're going to drop price, especially if they bring ProMotion and more zoned MicroLED. The best hope is that they don't increase the price tag like they just did to M2 MacBook Air.

thanks for pointing this out. Clearly I have missed that update.

it would make more sense if they update the 32 inch model though. Let's wait and see
Pushing 5K at 120Hz is considerably easier than 6K at 120Hz, and potentially leaves a lot more bandwidth for USB-C connections on the monitor than 6K.

Ross Young might end up being wrong about this, but I hope he's not. We'll just have to wait and see in October/November!

Couldn't they solve the bandwidth issues just by making the monitor have two thunderbolt upstream ports? This method could also allow for switching between two devices (but at a lower resolution).

That's an incredible inelegant solution though, and one I don't think Apple would ever implement.
I think they'd rather release another 6K 60Hz display with more refined mini-LED technology than have users plug in with two connectors.

But never say never... 6K 120Hz is technically possible with the highest bandwidth DisplayPort 2.0 as well, as it's just about 74Gbps at 8-bit pixel colour depth. DisplayPort 2.0 – which is based on Thunderbolt 3 – supports up to 80Gbps. Maybe Apple will let users choose. Maybe they'll compromise and go for 90Hz, which is still a substantial improvement on 60Hz, while requiring almost 20Gbps less bandwidth at 8-bit colour depth, while still allowing for 10-bit colour and remaining DP2.0-compatible.

Or maybe this is all just a pipe dream, and the bandwidth limitations are just too much for Apple to consider a 5K or 6K >60Hz display for the time being, and Ross Young is wrong about this one. I hope he's not, as I really want that 5K mini -LED ProMotion display, but he could be.
