An anonymous tipster is claiming that Apple will release Logic 8 tomorrow during the beginning of NAMM 2007. Logic's last major release came last February with the release of a universal binary version of Logic. That release had been previewed by Apple at NAMM 2006 the month prior.

According to Apple's event calendar and NAMM's website, Apple will indeed be making their traditional appearance at the trade show, so while we have been unable to confirm the tip, such a release is not totally far-fetched.

I noticed that Logic Express was at a reduced price at one of the stores I visited this week-cheaper than the A$499 that I paid for my copy last year.

I bet there will be some podcast options-and perhaps some new synths. Obviously we'll see a improved Sculpture and Ultrabeat.

please let this be true....logic is pretty long in the tooth...cubase, digital performer and ableton have all received major updates in the last 6 months. Apple need to step up.

I know MacRumors doesn't reveal their sources, but this sounds like wishful thinking by some Logic user. If it happens, I'll be shocked. But we can all hope. And yes, I am a Logic user.

I love Logic, but it's ugly as sin. Working in the Environment or EXS24 editor is painful to my eyes. Then again, all the Final Cut Studio stuff is a little bit hideous (excessive buttons. taking some cues from Blender would be good.), but Logic is the worst of the bunch. Here's hoping for a graphical overhaul.

There has been a lot of grumbling over at the bigbluelounge.com (Mac music and audio forum. Excuse the plug!) re Logic. But then like this Forum, whatever Apple do people grumble.

The perception is that nothing much has happened to Logic since Apple took over "stewardship" of Logic from Emagic. Not sure if this really IS the case, however a new major update wouldn't go amiss. I suspect that since this will be the first major release since Apple took over (i think!) there will be a major revamp of look and feel, no to say features, so this is quite a biggy in thw Music Audio world!

Well I do!

Not sure why those grumble over Apple anymore.

I'm a PC and MAC user, before Apple, Logic was like learning to become a chemist. And at the same time, PPC were a rip off, not the case anymore.

Macs are very fast. My ONLY grumble would be that all the product lines have dedicated GPU's, especially the macbook line.

Getting the gamers will require this as well, they need to support any GPU you might want to throw into a Mac Pro as well as offer two HD's for iMACs

Ok, a few more than one! :D

Other than that, Vista looks to be a doom for MSFT, especially with all the DRM and it being tied to hardware, not good, not good at all.

I like ProTools MBox.
Logic will not even do what I need.

I need to insert tones, at 5hz, play with white noise, etc.
(Brain sync stuff...quite fun, at least I enjoy it)

And ProTools has a sweet, clean interface.

Logic...does not look to Logical, nor does it look like an apple, easy to use app. I personallly hate it, but there are many that love it.

Peace

dAlen

I use and love both Pro Tools and Logic, but it has always struck me how much more "Apple-y" Pro Tools is.

It has a more intuitive, prettier interface and - despite having vastly fewer features on paper - has a beautifully designed, simple-yet-powerful way of working.

I do love Logic, and it will always be the King of studio-in-a-box applications for me, but it could certainly take a few leaves out of Pro Tools' book, certainly in terms of audio editing.

I'd SO love to be wrong - but I don't think we're going to see a Logic 8 until after Leopard for lotsa reasons.

Maybe a Logic 7.5 or something like that?

There's lots that could be done with the GUI - especially the Environment and audio editing - to make it much more "Appley" without the need to add a ton of "wow" new features. That's mostly because Logic is an incredible app as it is - it just needs the Apple touch to make those "under the hood" features much more accessible and intuitive.

Check out the Melodyne plug in's scroll bars for just a small idea of what I mean - so damned cool !!

Anyone know how announcements get made at NAMM? Are they usually made at the opening, or at points throughout the show?

I agree with you. But I think Apple has to make at least an announcement. People are pissed; a lot of people think Apple has just let Logic flounder since it was acquired, and in truth, they have. Logic 7 didn't really bring us all that many more features over Logic 6, and there are still massive bugs, particularly for those people who us PT HD or Accel hardware with Logic.

Plus Logic has been equalled by a number of other DAWs, and is missing quite a few "modern" features like elastic audio and proper PDC.

Plus Logic Express is a crippled joke compared to a lot of other mid-range DAWs.

I think if Apple does nothing at this NAMM, you're going to have a lot of people jumping ship really soon!

I think you're playing it fast and loose with the word "crippled" there...Ok, so it doesn't have beat mapping, Pitch correction, Space designer etc etc, but then it's a third of the price. Cubase now has certainly closed the gap with its professional/cut down version but it's a dog to use by all accounts.

I'm certainly looking forward to version 8. For me, a spring clean, finally sorting out multi-processor support PROPERLY so we get full use from all processors and cores and maybe some changes to the stability of the Audio Instruments section (crashes if overloaded for example) would make me very happy!

Logic Express is a crippled joke...I'll say it again.

I have no problem with Apple not giving us the extra effects and instruments; the cost of those alone MORE than justifies the price difference (just ask people who bought Space Designer when it was a separate Emagic product!).

But Apple have artificially crippled Logic Express for no good reason. I'll give you two example: (1) Aux objects, (2) bus objects. In LP7 (and in most DAWs), an aux object is like a tap into a bus; you can route audio there and manipulate it, but it doesn't affect the audio later down the bus. In LE, aux objects are ONLY for multi-outputs from audio instruments. Proper routing of audio should not be a "frill". Its the same with bus objects, which cannot route into other bus objects, thus making it impossible to (a) do drum parallel compression, (b) create feedback loops along with numerous other things.

Add to this the insane 12 i/o limitation, and it all adds up to one thing: Apple has crippled LE for no reason. I have no issue with leaving features out to justify the lower price point. But don't cripple the ones you give us.

What's more is that while Apple's comparison chart between LE and LP does say that LE has fewer auxes (for example), it fails to mention that auxes don't behave the same way in the two programs.

'Crippled' is what I'd call it.

I am a huge fan of Logic Express! I am a beginner in the music industry (only a few years now) and I'm quite comfortable using Logic Express. Sure, it was a lot harder to learn than GarageBand but, I'm finding out things I can do in Logic Express that GarageBand can only DREAM of doing and to me, Logic Express is easy to use now that I know how to use it correctly. I've made some very high quality recordings in Logic Express and overall I'm very happy with my choice. I don't have lots of money and I don't pirate software, so spending $299 wasn't that big of a deal for what I got. I've got a lot of use, time and money invested in Logic Express, so it would be stupid for me to throw all that away and start over with something else.

With that all being said... I do too look forward to Logic Express 8 and I wouldn't care if the interface stays the same or not. I just hope it won't be a screen hog like Aperture... Hehe.

Also, I have a Mac Pro, so more multi-threading and multi-core usage would be much appreciated! WOOOOOOHOOOOOO!

for the love of god update this friggin software......

it's old, haggard, and maybe the fact that it is stable is enough for Apple to want to leave it alone. But I would think that it would be one of their flagship projects simply because of how much emphasis they put on the music side of their products....

I've gone Ableton all the way at this point. Hopefully we see version 8 soon. :)

I saw your signature. Why do you want a 12 foot MacBook Pro? That would be huge! Also, congratulations on quitting smoking.
