I think it is unlikely that apple will anounce a major upgrade to any applications before Leopard is let out of the paddock. It would be barmy to 'cripple' an application with 10.4ness when it is launched when there is the joy of 10.5 in the wings. Just think resolution independent gui for sculpture so you can actualy see what your doing.

I would never expect apple to release a big Logic update before 10.5...but they could certainly *announce* an upgrade now and ship it some time soon after Leopard. It's not like they don't have internal versions of 10.5 that they can use for testing and demos.

What I'd like to see out of Logic Pro 8 is "no more XSKey dongle".

I'm not aware of other Apple Pro apps that need a dongle, so why keep one for Logic Pro? I find myself wanting to fire it up at various times when my XSKey is at home, which is irritating. (Same goes for Pro Tools M-Powered, which needs an M-Audio interface; if I leave my Transit at home I'm SOL.)

Absolutely will never happen. The XSKey is the best copy protection device ever; the rumour is that there is Logic code on it, so the program simply cannot run without it. It has never been cracked, and probably never will. Even the PC guys had a go at it when Logic was on v5.

I'd like to see either a less expensive logic pro with no dongle
or a more feature rich logic express - please give me more
than 12 recording tracks dammit! These issues keep me from
going to logic.

Keep in mind it's 12 simultaneous inputs and outputs. The actual max audio track count is 255, even on LE, compared with ProTools LE's 32 or 48!

I actually think the thing is a piece of garbage. I don't care if it works for them. It doesn't work for ME. At least all my other annoyingly-dongled apps can have their junk bundled into one iLok. I'm glad that nothing has happened to it yet, but I'm just waiting for it. One small piece of trash broken...out $1000.

No other Apple Pro app requires a dongle. It's ridiculous for this to be the only one.

I think it says a lot about the (perceived) level of piracy of audio apps vs the other pro app markets.

I bet it was just a carry-over from the eMagic days. I hope they kill it with the next version. I'd be glad to pay more for Logic if I didn't need the XSkey. Too many worries and hassles.

The thing is, while you can download copies of apple apps on bit torrent, the one thing you can't get to work is logic pro - there are loads of logic express out there, no pro. Why? The dongle!

In reality, it isn't an inconvenience unless you want to run pirate software. I mean, let's be honest no? I have three USB hubs, with about twenty five various things coming in and out and it's just part of my setup. You don't moan at phantom power which requires that little bit extra effort, or moan about the fact you have to plug in jack cables (the horror) so why moan about plugging in (and leaving) a tiny stick that is entirely inoffensive

:)

Leopard has nothing to do with it.

Folks OS X 10.5 Leopard has %0 marketshare. Pray tell why Apple would wait to deliver a massive upgraded based on an OS with no marketshare.

What apple does is prepares the new app for the dominant OS (read currently installed and field tested) and then they deliver a patch in the future once the new upgrade comes and people begin to purchase.

Logic Pro 8 is likely undergoing some huge changes in user interface and core functionality. It will likely take on a look that is more congruent with Final Cut Studio apps.

I'm expecting a huge upgrade. It's probably just not ready to announce now. We're likely a few months away still.

I take it you've never heard of a mobile studio.

Phantom power requires no "extra effort". I do hate cables. It's ridiculous that we don't have audio streaming wireless from our Macs to active monitors. Maybe you could take into account somebody else's setup.

I take it you've never heard of a mobile studio.

Nope, never heard of it

Dongles are great; they require no activation which means you can use your software anywhere and on any computer - the dongle in question is undeniably secure and to top it all off it's quick and simple and doesn't require any remembering of passwords, activation codes, serials and all the other guff I struggle with every time one of my hard drives dies that has some synths on or I update my OS etc etc.

Logic is one of the only products I use that doesn't require a hefty registration process followed by hours emailing tech support etc etc and I for one want to keep the dongle.

And mobile studio? Pah! You can carry round an external Hard drive (which you'll need if your serious) but can't plug in a dongle to protect the right to a software program that earns you money and will continue to do so during its development?

This is my first post here in an absolute age, but I feel that this 'announcement' as it were is a welcome one, and I'm gonna stick up for the XS key...

I'm going to be getting a Macbook within the coming weeks, to go alongside my G5 iMac... Now, if I were to use Logic on the Macbook, say for Location recordings, I'd have to find a workaround/decent explanation for using the same serial number on 2 separate machines.

With an XS Key, just swap em over whenever I want to use a different computer! Simple, hassle free, pain free...

I really can't see the problem in just utilising a USB port... Most people use hubs these days anyway, and if you're using a wired Apple keyboard, just stick it in one of the top slots! If you're on a laptop, get a cheap passive USB hub and you're away... Simple.

Anyway, if Logic 8 is going to be released, please let it be before May, as I'd still be able to get the educational pricing on it :D

I'd think Apple would allow us to use it on 2 computers, albeit maybe not at the same exact time, which is what the XS Key limits us to in the first place anyway.

In fact, an XS key over 2 computers is a real hassle. If you were to work at home and at a studio and on a mobile setup, you'd have to take your dongle with you everywhere you go (i.e. bring it home from work, take it out on recording, etc.).

That's not a hassle at all... I think someone mentioned that if you were using a portable HDD you'd be plugging that in and out all the time, so why is it so different with a dongle? Hell, you could attach the dongle to the HDD so they get carried around together all the time if need be!

I really just cannot see how this is a big deal... Carrying around something smaller than pretty much every USB memory stick is not that big a deal, surely?

iLok has been hacked; Synchrosoft has been hacked. Challenge/response has been hacked. The XSKey has not, and never will be; people have given up trying.

Piracy is rampany in the pro audio world, and to a much larger extent than in other areas. People have $20,000 PT HD3 rigs, and still pirate TDM plugs.

XSKey is here to stay, I'm afraid.

Totally agree, except the "few months away" bit; Musikmesse in March at the latest. I was wrong about NAMM, so....

You don't need an external HD for mobile recording. A large 5400 RPM drive keeps up fine with mono and stereo recordings, which is all you can really do walking around anyway. You can't even spell, so I'm assuming you're a little kid. When you grow up, you'll learn that dongles are a pain in the rear.

XS Key is fine in a studio environment. But I take Logic on the road nearly every day. Different story altogether.

I honestly hope this is NOT true. Right now Logic is limited by limitations in OS X 10.4.x. Especially for memory. 10.5 being fully 64bit will enable heavy programs like Logic to take full use of more than 3GB of ram, among other improvements.

I thought NAMM started today?

And as for taking it on the road, I'm yet to have my macbook, but when it arrives I shall be using Logic when I'm out and about a bit more... I shall see and comment when the time arrives

Hey everyone -

I'm actually covering the NAMM show for my website. I talked to an Apple drone who refused to "comment on any upcoming products" when asked about updates to Logic or iLife (Garageband). It was like pulling teeth to get him to say anything...

My cohorts then went to a Logic demo and finally heard one of the Apple employees claim that they will not be making any product announcements at NAMM.

What on earth are you on? My spelling is fine and I think it's safe to assume that I'm not a little kid. Mind you, the active younger members of this board would not stoop so low as to insult other members with sophomoric degradations such as "You can't even spell".

Dongles are a frought debate - but I'd rather have the software out there being legitimate than Logic being underfunded by selling poorly due to bootleg copies in the bittorrent marketplace.
