I really don't think Express is remotely "crippled" - sure they might have been a bit more generous in a couple of places, but at the end of the day they WANT people to be frustrated with it's limitations and upgrade to Pro!

Nor do I think v7 is "old" . . . I've been using it for years and I'm still finding hidden depths to it. Though as I said I'd love to be proved wrong today, my best guess is that the "delays" with regard to upgrades have been down to Logic 8 being highly optimised for Leopard - plus there's this whole Firewire driver thing to sort out.

There aren't any "pro" users who are going to be very impressed with an "eye candy" version release if they don't sort out the PDC and latency issues and those - I believe - are more to do with Core Audio than they are with Logic.

That said it would be reassuring to see SOMETHING happen with Logic development pretty soon . . . here's hoping its today!!

I'm not saying I don't understand the justification for the crippling (of course it's to make people upgrade), but I don't NEED a lot of the features of Pro; I get by with other plugs.

I've been around these circles long enough to remember when Logic came as Logic Audio Silver, Gold, and Platinum; you had choice about what you needed. You could also buy the plugs/effects you needed and add them to Logic or any other DAW as needed.

Apple has replaced this with LE, which is, I'm sorry, crippled, if you define crippled as Apple deliberately hindering the function of a feature for no good reason. An aux object in LP isn't an aux object in LE; they're different. Same with bus objects. You can exclude things if you want, but if you give us features, make them WORK!

The cost of the individual extra effects/instruments is much larger (based on what Emagic/Apple used to charge for them) than the difference in price between LP and LE. That makes LP a HUGE bargain, and LE a HUGE rip-off.

I hope this is true! I just came from Logic 5.5 on PC to Logic 7 on Mac. Not THAT much has changed. Although that is partially a good thing. Better support for multi-channel software instruments, folder tracks etc. would be nice, welcome additions though.

If this is true then it's kinda sad. Logic 6 went to 6.4.3, and Logic 7 only gets about a half dozen minor upgrades? I'd really like Apple to upgrade to 7.3, or even 7.5 would be cool, but a complete overhaul to 8, when I never really felt that comfortable with 7, is a bit batty. I might consider going with Ableton and Pro Tools full time instead of upgrading.

i just opened software update to see if logic 8 was coming (i have logic express and was hoping for an update) and i got logic express 7.2.3 in the update

this is what it said

"Logic Express 7.2.3 addresses performance issues when Logic Express 7 is used on Mac Pro and G5 Quad computers. Logic Express 7.2.3 is recommended for all Mac Pro and G5 Quad users. An existing Logic Express 7.2.1 or Logic Express 7.2.2 installation is required for this update.

Note: Logic Express 7.2.3 is optimized for PowerPC G4, G5 and Intel based Macs with up to 2 dual-core processors"

we've been at 7.2.3 for a while now ;)

As long as that makes sense to you . . . is all that matters!

I've heard that bouncing songs doesn't use all cores and is still pretty slow.

I can confirm that on a 4 core mac pro, bouncing only uses 1 core. I don't really consider this a huge problem though... logic is definitely in need of an update; I hope all the time we've been waiting means something big is being planned.

Dongle

What I'd like to see out of Logic Pro 8 is "no more XSKey dongle".

I'm not aware of other Apple Pro apps that need a dongle, so why keep one for Logic Pro? I find myself wanting to fire it up at various times when my XSKey is at home, which is irritating. (Same goes for Pro Tools M-Powered, which needs an M-Audio interface; if I leave my Transit at home I'm SOL.)

I agree-I prefer serial numbers over dongles.

So is apple announcing or showing anything new at NAMM? It's in session now and other companies have made announcements.

It would be good if it finally got some Pro Tools challenging audio editing capabilities...

That said, it would also be amazing if Pro Tools finally introduced offline bouncing! PLEASE!!

I would like to see that, but I think it's the one thing keeping Logic Pro from being pirated everywhere. A lot of Edu users and amateur musicians would probably end up downloading and not paying for Logic Pro.

I'd like to see either a less expensive logic pro with no dongle
or a more feature rich logic express - please give me more
than 12 recording tracks dammit! These issues keep me from
going to logic.

I don't know why you think version 8 is around the corner when Apple have just seeded version 7.3 beta to Apple professionals.

Really? What's your source? And are there any real improvements or is it just minor tweaks like 7.1 and 7.2?

Logic is way WAY overdue for a major update. And Apple needs to add 64 bit support asap once Leopard ships.

I think Leopard will be released before logic

I think it is unlikely that apple will anounce a major upgrade to any applications before Leopard is let out of the paddock. It would be barmy to 'cripple' an application with 10.4ness when it is launched when there is the joy of 10.5 in the wings. Just think resolution independent gui for sculpture so you can actualy see what your doing.
