I just got of the phone with a senior advisor at Apple who seemed to have a lot of hands on experience. He gave me more confidence in waiting for a software solution.

He was confident this is a driver issue and seemed to have a good idea of what was likely happening which he tried to describe to me. He suggested this startup-only problem has likely been categorized as a cosmetic issue and prioritized accordingly. He was flexible as to whether I wanted to further escalate at this time to see if there is a work around or wait first to see if the next update fixed the problem. I opted for the latter as my workflow is not affected. At no time did he suggest or recommend that hardware was at fault.

Got this on the 1280 resolution a few weeks ago while I was waiting at the Apple Store for another issue. I had Genius Bar test it out and they said all tests were fine.
Only had it once since until this morning when I logged in and saw it again (kept overnight in a place where was low 60s F).

Edit: base nTB. I installed 10.12.3 beta after to see if this will help. Will report back (probably tomorrow morning)

Welcome to the club! Overnight cold storage is a reliable way to reproduce the login display bug. Let us know how 10.12.3 affects the bug. Maybe you could report the bug as an Apple developer.

No graphics issue with 10.12.3 this morning, despite cold storage and 1280

if its just happening on 1280 I dont see a huge deal do that many people really use 1280?

1440 and 1680 work for me,

You'll understand when you are older. :)

But there is also a good technical reason to use 1280X800. The retina display pixel count is an exact multiple of this native resolution. This results in less pixel interpolation for certain graphics.

Thus the rule of thumb - for the sharpest image on a fixed-pixel display, always use the native resolution. In this case, it just happens to be an integer multiple thereof...

Not a big deal for you, good!

Worth investigating for those who use this feature daily. just like iPad not having a file manager not a big deal for those who use the cloud or not having multiple windows fine as you can have two, but for others, osx with file manager and having multiple windows open is key. Its all in your use case.

sorry, the integer mapping makes sense

I just was always glad to steer away from 1280

I had a classic 13" and hated it

1440x900 on 13" was always good with my MacBook air, and sometimes I want smaller

ymmv big time, but I didn't realize the graphical glitch was largely 1280

for me it isn't an issue, but that is unfortunate and apple should get it togehter

I'm much more comfortable with 1280. 1440 is workable, but causes eyestrain.

This is great news!

I installed Sierra 10.12.3 Beta 3 yesterday and the MacBook Pro slept overnight in a 60 degree F area. Woke up this morning on 1280 x 800 resolution with no display glitches! I think we may have a fix!

Good news, Jim! Still too early to be certain though I think.

FWIW. I think the computer needs to be awakened from "Standby Mode" for this glitch to occur. I grabbed the description below from Apple's documentation on Sleep. To make this description more complete I have added ", or open the lid if closed" to the end this description.

Standby Mode
For Mac computers that are started from an solid-state drive, OS X includes a deep sleep mode known as Standby Mode. Mac computers manufactured in 2013 or later enter standby after one to three hours of regular sleep. A computer with a fully charged battery can remain in standby for up to thirty days without being plugged in to an AC power source.

To wake your Mac from standby mode, press a key on the keyboard, press its power button, or open the lid if closed.

Thanks for your description about Standby Mode. Since my computer was asleep for 10 hours with the lid closed, it should have entered Standby Mode. I woke it up by opening the lid and did not observe any display glitches using Sierra 10.12.3 Beta 3. I will repeat the tests this week.

No morning wakeup 1280x800 display glitches after 7 consecutive days using Sierra 10.12.3 Beta 3. I will send feedback to Apple on my experience. I will install Beta 4 and continue testing.

Thanks for the update. This is great news. Any idea when the 10.12.3 will be publicly available?

Thank you very much for sharing this with us, Jim. Looking good...

FWIW. Plugging the MacBook into power just before opening the lid seems to avoid the glitch. I guess this takes it out of Standby Mode.
