yeah, you do have a point. but i think what i said still really applies here.

there are a lot of people around here who want a mac between the mini and pro for a long time. and it still hasn't happened. I'm starting to think that it won't happen
I understood your point about the system users want, and Apple uses the iMac as the middle ground between a Mini and MP, which has no expansion. Others have issues with a built-in monitor (whatever the reason).

Apple sees the Quad core MP as the "headless" expandable mac users have been clamoring for, which is overpriced for what's offered, and why users have a problem seeing it as what they're asking for (generally speaking, as others may find technical faults with it as well).

My Hackintosh

All I have to say is this HACKINTOSH for 1200 bucks with an outdated Core 2 Quad at 3.72 ghz and 4 gb of high end DDR3 ram out performs and BLOWS AWAY A BRAND NEW 2.66ghz Xeon MacPro with 8gb or ram!!! And ALMOST TWICE FASTER than the 8 CORE MAC PRO!! with 6GB of ram. This computer hit #2 on Cinabench. Only thing fast was an I7 with 8gb of ram over clocked and liquid cooled at 4.1 GHZ and it would cost me $1300 more to build!!! HAHAHAAH I THINK I MADE MYSELF A GOOD COMPUTER.

It always sleeps and wakes up from sleep!
Never crashes!
Encodes and copies and BURNS two Blu Rays at the same time In UNDER 30 MIN!
If you think I could have built an I7 for less your a mad man.
THIS BLOWS AWAY ANY I3, I5 I7 out of the box on the market. Its SLIGHTLY outdated, But this Core 2 Quad is built on the same platform as a XEON. And actually performs better Overclocked! Ive been doing this for Years so newbs .....go get on your WOW or EverQuest forum and complain somewhere else.

nice, you just confirmed you're a ****ing troll.

gtfo this forum. ppl like you give hackintosh bad rep.

spcopsmac21: you're not serious, are you? I put together an i7 machine yesterday with six gigs of RAM for ~$1,000. So don't tell me I can't build a better machine than yours for cheaper. It ain't gonna fly.

And yeah, you are a troll. Go away.

troll?

Actually I am ex US ARMY Ranger and a three time Iraq/Afgan war vet. I was hit in a IED blast in 2008 where I lost 30% use of my motor functions and have brain damage and spinal damage. I am now a computer engineer for Raytheon systems. (The people who make things that keep your freedoms safe you ass hats.) So excuse me if in my free time I don't go play football and dress up like a fairy at Dragon Con and get wasted with my WOW buds. :apple:

Other members may be deriving the wrong intent with your posts, given the tone seems a tad combative.

Perhaps just stating you built x, and are very satisfied for the cost/performance ratio. If anyone asks, you can provide pricing and benchmarks. Rather easy. :D

As per being a computer engineer (I am as well), I'd have expected you to realize the differences between the C2Q and Nehalem architecture, which could be seen as a lack of credibility (i.e. FSB was dumped for QPI, the memory controller is integrated on the CPU's die, and the controller has additional features).

Just a thought. :)

Wa?

I build computers as a hobby. I build payload delivery system for UAV's (drones). And I am very happy with the way my hackintosh system turned out. I usually stick with AMD processors but there is no feasible way I could have built a continually stable Hackintosh on any current AMD architecture. This I am sure you can agree upon.

You might wanna read upon the "Nehalem" and "Penryn" architecture.
Just a little hint, they are NOT the same! Nehalem based CPU's are actually 15-20% faster than Penryn based ones, depending on the specific application.

As far as AMD and building a hackintosh goes, I've seen a few such machines, but the vast majority are indeed Intel-based. That's what I'll go with when I get around to building my hackintosh.

AMD isn't the easiest chip to use for a hackintosh, though there have been a few successes (Modbin's Kernel; article).

I end up spending time doing research on new components (I get all kinds of email from component vendors), and given your profession, it would be prudent to keep up with some things, such as Intel's CPU lines IMO. I think of it as job security, as the defense industry is fickle; think Congress and budgets. ;) Projects get cut (been there, done that with Lockheed Martin). :(

Just got my i7 hackintosh up and running the other day.
Real simple: made an image of the snow leopard disk, restored it to an 8gb thumb drive, applied "kakewalk" patch to thumb drive, then the installer was ready. I just had to change about 4 settings in my BIOS, then plugged it in and installed OSX just like I would on any mac. I have it all updated and zero issues, my 2 DVI screens worked instantly and were set up properly, ATI driver was included so I have full use of my 4870.
Adobe apps and FCS works like a charm, compressor(with cluster setup) is about 8 times faster than my 2.16ghz c2d MBP.

My Mac Tower:
i7 920 2.67GHz
6GB DDR3
4870 1GB
2x 1TB (1 for OSX 1 for Win7)

Gigabyte EX58-UD3R motherboard

With 2 Dell 2209WA's attached

aboutmac.jpg

It sees the i7 as a Xeon :D

It was about $2200(CAD) in total including the 2 dell monitors(1 I had for a while before), I bought the tower in fall but didn't hackintosh it until a few days ago. I tried to when I first got it but gave up when I couldn't get 10.5 installed. I realized the other day I never tried snow leopard, then found the kakewalk tool, and like I said, it was easy.

I have that same setup but the ud4r mobo.....been thinking about installing osx got a link on how I would do it?

i wonder if the other couple of million people that have been blown up boast about it like this guy does? it annoys me when vets think that they have something over you because they fort to "save our lives". he didnt save my life, so why should i care?

ugh i wouldnt touch that with a 10-foot RAM stick!

Nice work.
I just built a computer
i5 Processor (stock clock for now- it's plenty fast. Yes, I got rid of the stock one however)
Gigabyte P55A-UD3 Motherboard
GSKILL 1600 DDR3 4GB RAM
1TB HDD Caviar Black
GTX 260

I, personally am not going to install OS X (I hate the word Hackintosh haha) on my computer. I don't have any problems with Windows 7, so I'd rather keep it dedicated to that only. It doesn't deserve the s*** many Mac users give.

I think we all know what Spacedust meant. I agree with him, other than the fact for hating people who use OS X on their PC. It's not legal most importantly.

I would much rather save up for a Mac than install Mac on my PC. (even though Hackintoshing my motherboard is suppose to be very easy).

lol whats that??

Depending on your mood, it's either a star in the Draco constellation, or a six-core processor from AMD which hasn't been released yet.

wordoflife: I like Windows 7. Personally I only use Windows for CAD and occasional gaming, and OS X for everything else.

Aussie Poo down under (my butt)

Yea, I have a buddy who has installed Mac OS X SL on a Playstation 3, had the blue tooth keyboard and mouse running and it still reads and plays PS3 games. its somewhat limited, but still a very cool idea if you have the free time.

Oh and who can agree Fosters beer sucks. Well so does BUD

I like the Mac Pro. and I like to buy stuff that just requires opening up the cardboard box, plugging in and good to go. Not worth my time messing around trying to rig something up.

I hate people using Hackintosh. You've killed the soul of this computer and it's highly illegal. Apple should block all processors they don't use in their computers like Core2Quad, Atom, all AMD etc.

I remainds me of people using cheapest white MacBook (old version) and telling everyone they're rich because they got a Mac.

@work: 10.5.6 installed on my t60 thinkpad, 10.5.6 installed on my c2d thinkcentre, have them hooked up to three monitors and use teleport to share the mouse & keyboard, sweet setup. (even sweeter that now i'm eligible to get a new laptop, waiting on that stinking mbp update)

@home: macpro3,1

would be nice if my company would pay for a macpro, but that is unrealistic.
