and the attendant came running out in a panic.

That's freaking hilarious. "OH NO HE'S GOING TO DO IT WRONG AND MAYBE START A FIRE I MUST STOP HIM!!!"

You'd think they'd realize if someone casually starts to pump their own gas that maybe they're out of state and have done it before. Relax, ya know? :)

That sounds like the ones I've come across that are there, but not working yet. What part of the country are you in?

Florida. This was at one of the Turnpike rest stops south of Orlando, during the before-times (late 2019)

Some do - i used one a couple months ago, for the first time in years, and it had NFC. I assumed they must all be switched over now since I haven‘t used a pump in so long :). Maybe just a silicon valley thing?

In my experience, the vast majority of Mobil stations around here don't have NFC at the pump. Even the one by my house that recently converted to being Mobil and ripped out/replaced their pumps. The ironic thing about that station is that the chip actually works at the pumps, too.

This won't help me. I drive an all electric Chevy Bolt for environmental reasons. I am looking forward to when Apple releases the new electric Apple Car.

How do you manage that (assuming you're in New Jersey or another place where full service is legally mandatory)? I remember taking a trip to Oregon a few years ago, forgetting it was one of those states at the time, pulled up at a rural gas station, was getting ready to pump my own gas and the attendant came running out in a panic. The pump was locked down, but they must not get many out-of-staters in that part.
I have to drive up to New Jersey for work occasionally I just tell them I am pumping it feel free to call the police but ill be gone in 3 minutes. Its really not worth it to hold up the line etc and the police will never respond for a call like that. One guy did call and blocked my car in for over an hour repeatedly calling 911 eventually he gave up. (Yes this is a hill im willing to die on).

wow it would be awesome if we could pump our own gas in new jersey.
Or the rest of Oregon.

The 3% is barely any incentive for my area, because they are more expensive anyway.
Not to mention the fact that Costco have them beat in price.
Of course, the Costco membership fee is a consideration. But it should not matter unless someone is paying the membership fee just to get gas.

Anyone else annoyed that gas pumps don't have NFC payment terminals on them yet? I wish I didn't have to fumble with an app and could just Apple Pay at the physical pump.
Most gas stations I come across in the US don't have NFC, sadly. Weirdly enough, the one across the street from the apartment I just moved into does, so I lucked out.

How about the ability to export a yearly spending report / statement? It would and could be my only card if they made it more Tax-time friendly.

Exxon is a top tier fuel and the high octane synergy blend exceeds even those requirements it will always cost more than a discount station but your engine will thank you in the long run. Costco may be top tier as well I haven't looked into it.

So I applied last year and was denied for the Apple Card, and want to try again now that my credit is over 740. Is it a hard credit check? I don’t want it to affect my score

Eh, they cost a little more then Shell so I’d be spending more money in the end. At least that’s the case in my area. Good perk for regular Mobil customers though.

From what I've seen, there's a lot of Shell and BP stations that have the panels, but it's either disabled (no lights) or declines immediately.
Yeah, I've seen them on several Shell stations and got excited about it, only to get an immediate "DECLINED" when I tried to use it.

Exxon used to have the next-best thing, a corresponding Apple Watch app that would let you pay for gas (though not with NFC) without having to pull out your iPhone and launch that app, but they did away with it right around the time that I started using it last Summer.

I wonder why these promotions keep going. I mean I’m sure some stores will or have dropped out, but these have been going for a long time. Nike has been 3% since Black Friday if I recall.

It's probably a win-win for both Apple and the retailer. They must be seeing an uptick in Apple Pay sales that it justifies keeping it around.

Sheetz stations here in the eastern panhandle of WV have NFC. It's why I buy just from them (had cc #s stolen from one too many pumps).

I have a little theory that Shell wants all of them to have EMV contactless before allowing them to work (as opposed to MSD contactless that many stations have). There's a Circle K/Shell combo around the corner from me that has them and it declines. They pulled the Shell branding for about four months (contract dispute?) and MSD contactless was working. Immediately once the Shell stuff went back up, it went back to declining.

Standalone Circle Ks work with MSD contactless and standalone Shells have the panels, but they decline, so I'm kind of guessing based on all the pieces working/not working.
