I don't care about the 3%. I don't want to go in to the store to use the register terminal. I don't want to install a completely separate app to use Apple Pay. I just want to wave my phone/watch in front of the pump and have it work.

Unfortunately, that's not going to happen at very many gas stations because they were exempted from having to update the payment panels on the pumps years ago when everyone was legally required to accept the "chip" credit cards (which many places STILL don't accept).

They weren't exempted per se, just allowed more time (initially to 2017, then 2020, and now April 2021). Still, I get the suspicion that gas stations are some of the places that don't want people using cards at all--hence the prevalence of cash/credit pricing and only doing the minimum required to accept cards in the first place.

Exxon is a top tier fuel and the high octane synergy blend exceeds even those requirements it will always cost more than a discount station but your engine will thank you in the long run. Costco may be top tier as well I haven't looked into it.
Costco is Top Tier, surprisingly so is Arco.

Anyone else annoyed that gas pumps don't have NFC payment terminals on them yet? I wish I didn't have to fumble with an app and could just Apple Pay at the physical pump.
Chevron Stations here in Los Angeles have them. Works with my Apple Watch.

Apple needs a place that you can easily see the promotions in the wallet app. And possibly when your close to a place offering a promotion provide a little notification in the wallet app to notify people. Opt in of course.

On the positive side, I'm starting to see more chip reader capable payment terminals on gas pumps, even though they don't have NFC. You can tell because they have a little padlock icon, and the screen will sometimes say "Insert Chip".

On the negative side, they use an "insert card" mechanism nearly identical to the old swipe system; the only difference is you leave your card in. So it STILL has a magstripe reader in the path you insert the card to read the chip, and a skimmer can still be fitted. Why the hell couldn't they use the same type of reader you see on POS terminals where you just insert the card a third of the way?

SMH.

Some do - i used one a couple months ago, for the first time in years, and it had NFC. I assumed they must all be switched over now since I haven‘t used a pump in so long :). Maybe just a silicon valley thing?
Some do. That said, I have about a 90% failure rate with gas pump NFC. I'm usually quit surprised when it actually works.

Then there are the in-store terminals (not just in gas stations) that don't have any indication of doing Apple Pay until after you insert a card.

The reason is it still has to accommodate other types of cards such as gift cards, loyalty cards, and other cards that don't have a chip. Most of these pumps will be upgradable to NFC very easily, as the stations in Phoenix I have posted in my picture earlier. There is a pop out panel, where they just pop it out and install the NFC reader right there for very little cost and downtime.

You need to be a professional :)

When I was a kid my dad used to drive us across the border into Ramsey to get gas because it was much cheaper, even with having to pay for the person to pump. Of course, back then in NY you’d have to tell them if you wanted “self service” otherwise they’d charge you more. Are there full service gas stations anywhere anymore other than NJ?
Oregon. Self service is allowed only in rural counties and between certain hours.

So it STILL has a magstripe reader in the path you insert the card to read the chip, and a skimmer can still be fitted.

What difference does it make? Like all things in security, you have to think about your attack model:

1. A skimmed magstripe can't be used on an EMV terminal. The liability shift has caused magstripe terminals to only be present on low-value purchases, making stolen magstripe data useless for criminals.

2. A skimmed magstripe is difficult to use online because of the missing CVV2 data.

3. You might say a skimmed magstripe still has the PAN (CC number) and expiration date. However, that data is available completely unencrypted via NFC or contact chip .

So if you evaluate the threat model, you see that magstripe readers don't add any significant security risk.

AT&T just added Apple Pay but it’s only 2% Cash Back.

So that 2% would apply for recurring bill payments? Didn't know they added that! I'll look into it!

I wish Apple would bring that 6% for all Apple purchases.

Still good to see them adding partners...hoping the trend continues.

I’d say 60% of the gas stations near me have them. Sadly only one actually has them turned on, and their prices tend to be higher than the rest.

Mobil is by far the worst and least frequent gas station in our area—and when you do find one, the pumps are from 1978. Oh well, won't be using this perk. Will need to stick to 2% at other NFC pumps.

Yep. Great car. Replaced a boxster that i had had since 2003, but which kept having massive mechanical problems.
It's interesting you should say that, because you're not the first current/former Porsche owner I've heard of switching to or at least adding a Tesla to their collection. Like it honestly almost seems to be some kind of a trend, at least from my perspective anyway. Is it because of the similar astute attention to detail among both companies? I've just always been curious about that and why Porsche people wouldn't gravitate towards the Taycan first if they're venturing into the EV world.

In our area they have the latest and greatest tech, big color LCDs, and NFC at the pump too, so you don't even need to use the app if you don't want to and still get the 5%
