You had to use Apple Pay either inside directly on the terminal, on the pump if equipped, or if not in the app. If you used the physical card you won’t get the 3%
I got the 3% at an Exxon station, no NFC reader but the app recognized the QR code on the pump. Nice side effect, no need to use the card, enter ZIP code, etc.

The sad thing is that I did see one of these at a Turnpike rest stop, and I got all happy and enthusiastically brought up Apple Pay, and nothing happened. I looked like a fool waving my phone at the pump.

So some pumps might have them, but I've never actually seen a working one. :(
That was Wawa and Sheetz in the beginning, and Wawa recently when they added the new Chip Card Technology until they fixed it. Haven't seen any pumps with AP except those so far. What annoys me more about pumps than how you pay though is why are some so freaking slow?!? Depending on speed I can be filled from near empty anywhere from a minute to five.

I have to drive up to New Jersey for work occasionally I just tell them I am pumping it feel free to call the police but ill be gone in 3 minutes. Its really not worth it to hold up the line etc and the police will never respond for a call like that. One guy did call and blocked my car in for over an hour repeatedly calling 911 eventually he gave up. (Yes this is a hill im willing to die on).
I don't mind it too much on the rare times I go over to NJ and need to fill as long as they are available. Don't want to be waiting longer than I could do it myself.

Make sure the Exxon app has Bluetooth access allowed. The app will detect bluetooth beacons in the pumps and know what station you're at so all you have to enter is the pump number, no scanning the QR code.

Thanks, good to know.
