Late June

I wonder if they pushed the release date back to the end of June to give themselves another couple of weeks to build inventory to have A LOT of satisfied customers on the first couple of days.

•"...it has a place to put your SIM. It looks to not have an easily replaceable battery (like the IPODS no battery door)." [This runs contrary to other rumors.]

To be honest, I'm not bothered about a replacable battery.. I've not encountered anyone in the last three years who's needed to replace the things. It's run out? Recharge it. It's not exactly difficult, and doesn't mean carrying another charger if (a) you've got a MB/MBP, and (b) the iPhone dock connector cable...

I have a Windows Mobile 5 phone, and it charges via USB - I think that's a viable alternative to swapping batteries.

I now invite someone to persuade me you need the ability to change the battery in a mobile phone... ;)

I doubt it. Vista never even had 50% of the buzz surrounding the iPhone.

Even my Grandma wants one. More than can be said for Vista (which none of my many friends yet own)...

Heh, yeah. And vista was being sold at a much, much larger number of locations, could be pre-ordered online, and, yeah, way more boring. But I think it's hard to judge by the hype what will happen -- everybody in their right minds wants an iphone, but that doesn't mean many will buy it, necessarily, whereas vista is the other way around. But I think there will be crowds for sure, because seriously, who doesn't want to SEE the iphone?

IFOApplestore.com, run by the guy who covers the Apple retail scene, says that the AT&T stores will have very low numbers of iPhones to sell, "perhaps fewer than 40 units." I know Jobs had said to A. Huffington that he recommends people going to AT&T stores, where the lines are going to be shorter, but if that report is true, most people should probably line up at the Apple Stores.

Good to know

Fantastic! :) No company needs the negative publicity of an expensive product that is largely unavailable at release. When consumers can't get what they want, the first thing that comes out of their collective mouth is "ahh, it's overpriced anyway..."

Unless the product is a Cabbage Patch Kid.

According to the AT&T rep...

I'm a current "the new AT&T" customer and I recently got a call from them asking me to upgrade my phone. While I was on the phone with them, I stated that I would love to get a new phone, but I'm waiting for the iPhone. My understanding (from a conversation with a store rep and what I've been able to get from the internets), was that you could only get the phone with a contract and that if I re-upped my contract now, I wouldn't be able to get the iPhone for at least a year.

She stated that she had no doubt whatsoever that I would be able to buy the iPhone without a contract. She didn't know what the pricing would be but that it would undoubtedly be higher than a "with contract" phone.

Additionally, she also stated that I would not be required to get a data plan with the iPhone. I asked about it because I think AT&T's data plans are expensive and since I would probably be using wifi whenever possible, somewhat unnecessary.

Obviously, due to this coming from a sales rep, take this with a huge grain of salt. However, if true, it bodes well. I'm a lot more interested in getting this phone free and clear and possibly unlocked. I'm sure a lot of t-mobile users would be interested too...

Either way, we'll know for sure in a few weeks.

3 million * $500=1.5 billion dollars in inventory. That's one hell of a bet. Now we know why apple keeps so much cash around.

more like 300 a pop....500 includes profit:)

Well i just lied at work to get friday off. As posted earlier i will prolly bug the hell outta my att store the whole week prior.

Does anyone know how many PS3's sold the first day they were available? If the iPhone beats that mark, it will certainly be incredible.

I hope it does better than that. From what I understand, the PS3 has been produced in low quantities and has still not met sales expectations.

HAHAHAHAHA! I knew it wasn't my eyes playing tricks on me!!!! :D

not saying much but Scott Bourne of Applephoneshow podcast said that he heard you could buy it outright for 999.95. I'm not holding my breathe, and i find it silly if i'm already tied in (just re-upped to put my parents on my bill) for another 20 months why should i have to sign a new contract. Just let me pay the 600 bucks plus taxes and the 18 dollar upgrade fee and let me run out the door.

Three million the first day? Hmmm... might be a good time to buy shares in the companies that'll be making iPhone cases.
Silly as it sounds, I almost never dream about anything in my sleep - but last night I had a dream, and there was an iPhone in it. That darn iPhone has gotten inside my brain!

1500 iphones per store? even if they allocate a whole bunch to AT&T/Apple online stores, 1,000 or so per store is waaaaaayyy toooo much stock for a launch like this,or really any launch. There are lots of AT&T stores and apple stores around, they are certainly overestimating the aount of product they will be moving if tey think 1,000 or so units will go out quickly at each store. Apple has said many times that it would only be available with 2 year contract. Sorry to whoever said they spoke with their AT&T Rep,those employees don't know ****.Im sure it will be available without a data plan because another 30 dollars a month is a lot to force on customers. Also, how would the iphone if it was available without contract cost more than it does with contract. It has been clearly stated that the iphone will not be subsidized. Therefore, any potential non-contract price would be the same as the contract price!AT&T employees never know. I am a blackberry addict. When the new curve was being launched, AT&T made a press release stating it would be available the next day. I called my two local stores and they did not even know what the phone was! Other stores said sometime in July, which was clearly wrong for a phone released on MAy 31. I then called another store about 30 mins away the ext day, and surprise surprise, they had somehow gotten the units in. I got mine and it is a great device, I will not be budging for the iphone. I could have waited a few weeks for it, but I don't see it as a realistic option for power users.I say it here, the iPhone will be jut a fashion statement. Yes it will do well, but not for business users. Blackberry is king and will continue in that position through the iPhone release. Good day, boys.

haha

I spoke to two separate people at ATT&T yesterday (one local to me and then other from 611). Both stated that since I was already a Cingular customer, I could purchase the phone at the advertised price $499 or $599 no matter where my current contract is. I am 9 months into a 2 year agreement and wouldn't have to extend my agreement.

I am somewhat skeptical b/c if there is anyone out there who had the "Un Plan", I still have it and don't want a new plan.

I want to walk in, plunk down my $599 and probably another $129 for the bluetooth headset from Apple (guessing on price) and be on my way. I will even be happy to do another 2 year extension of my current contract.

I have been nothing but happy with Cingular for the past 7 years or so.

Curious Question:

How long does it take (start to finish) to sell a single cell phone? I'm sure there's a lot involved, for example:
  • Q and A about the phone, service plan, contracts, costs, etc...
  • Reading and signing the contract(s)
  • Opening the box for the phone for programming and setup (phone number assignment, account information, etc..)
  • Payment and checkout.
How long does that all take? How long could the "wait" be at the store assuming it's packed full of people, given that everyone buying one will be taking all this time to sign contracts, set up the phone, etc?

I bet that the lines will be long, and there will be a lot of waiting in order to purchase the iPhone.

Better bring some good books or your iPhone for watching movies / listening to music....oh, wait.... :p

There has been a lot of talk about activating through iTunes or the web. Has this rumor died, or is that still a possibility?

Ot...

I just went to the BlackBerry Curve website and see that they are the sponsor for John Mayer's 2007 summer tour. Kind of funny since he preforms at a lot of Mac events...

Come launch day, i'll be somewhere in northern ontario trying to enjoy nature and wondering how long it will take Rogers to pick up the iPhone. And if i know Rogers, i'll still be wondering this time next year.

Perhaps Apple has found/decided on a way to streamline the process... the hassle that one might usually go through might have been found "unacceptable" by Steve Jobs and he might have demanded there be a quicker way.
