if they sell 3 million iphones in one day I'll poop myself. That's got to be some kind of technilogical sales record

Surley that is totally impossible, that would mean that more than 4 % of the american people would own one?

Me no believe...

Hope they sell unlocked ones on eBay for us poor Europeans

I'm a current "the new AT&T" customer and I recently got a call from them asking me to upgrade my phone. While I was on the phone with them, I stated that I would love to get a new phone, but I'm waiting for the iPhone. My understanding (from a conversation with a store rep and what I've been able to get from the internets), was that you could only get the phone with a contract and that if I re-upped my contract now, I wouldn't be able to get the iPhone for at least a year.

She stated that she had no doubt whatsoever that I would be able to buy the iPhone without a contract. She didn't know what the pricing would be but that it would undoubtedly be higher than a "with contract" phone.

Additionally, she also stated that I would not be required to get a data plan with the iPhone. I asked about it because I think AT&T's data plans are expensive and since I would probably be using wifi whenever possible, somewhat unnecessary.

Obviously, due to this coming from a sales rep, take this with a huge grain of salt. However, if true, it bodes well. I'm a lot more interested in getting this phone free and clear and possibly unlocked. I'm sure a lot of t-mobile users would be interested too...

Either way, we'll know for sure in a few weeks.

The rep knows nothing. If we've learned anything the details haven't been distributed to them. And if they have, they're not just sharing them with any Joe Schmo (you) that calls in asking. Sounds like they're saying the same thing they'd say about any other phone.

The phone will not work on Tmobile. Cingular didn't sign a 5 year contract for a phone to be able to work on Tmobile. For one, Tmobile and Cingular use completely differentn GSM technology. A standard GSM phone on Cingular doesn't work on TMobile either. Different tech. Doesn't matter that they both use sim cards. They're incompatible.

Plus, the iPhone's advance features are linked to the server side software at Cingular. Visual voicemail specifically.

Ummm.... try "personnel" :)

Darn, you beat me to it. :D

But seriously: 3M phones on launch day? There are 24 hours in that day, (most stores are only open from 9am to 9pm, but we'll give the 24 hour stores the benefit of the doubt) * 60 minutes * 60 seconds means somewhere just south of 35 phone sales per second for every second of that day.

Even if those 3M phones were supposed to last a week, that's 5 phones per second.

Wow.

there's no way the could sell 3 million iphones in 1 day, maybe a year, but 1 day NO no

I very easily see a line of hundreds of people when the stores open. Multiply that times the number of stores and all each store has to do is sell 50-200 iPhones by some accts. And that doesn't take into acct the online orders. But no doubt the online orders will not come from the same supply and will likely be on hold until more phones are available. I'd guess a very small supply will be available for the online stores for ATT. Probably quite a bit at apple.com.

More like 1% isn't it? But you make a good point. There's no way 1% of the American people would buy one even within 2007. They're going to sell the majority of the phones in Europe and Asia(Eventually. They'll make a killing in Japan. Every other Japanese person will have one). The reason they sold so many iPods in America is because a lot of people have 3-5 iPods.

But then again...

More like 1/100th of a percent.

"Hope they sell unlocked ones on eBay for us poor Europeans"

Have you seen the prices "pre-orders" are getting on e-bay?? Won't be for "poor" Europeans, that's for sure. Saw one this morning - 1500 bucks for a $600 phone. I'm getting in line right after work, Thursday the 28th and taking Friday off to recover and play with my new tech-toy.

Yawn.....

(-_-) Wake me up when the real news happens... like Leopard coming out early or iWork 08, iLife 08, New spreadsheet application, 12" MBP, Updated iMacs or MacMinis, fullscreen iPod with iPhone UI and design... and so forth...

Apple makes other things besides that damn iPhone ya know.

Curious Question:

How long does it take (start to finish) to sell a single cell phone? I'm sure there's a lot involved, for example:
  • Q and A about the phone, service plan, contracts, costs, etc...
  • Reading and signing the contract(s)
  • Opening the box for the phone for programming and setup (phone number assignment, account information, etc..)
  • Payment and checkout.
How long does that all take? How long could the "wait" be at the store assuming it's packed full of people, given that everyone buying one will be taking all this time to sign contracts, set up the phone, etc?

I bet that the lines will be long, and there will be a lot of waiting in order to purchase the iPhone.

Better bring some good books or your iPhone for watching movies / listening to music....oh, wait.... :p

This was exactly the question I had when I started reading this thread. I'd hope they had some sort of streamline process in place on launch day.

I'd almost feel bad (not really) for anyone just wanting to get a "normal" phone at an AT&T store that day. :p I'm just praying my current AT&T phone doesn't do anything stupid for at least a few weeks after the iPhone launch. Getting into a store or through to anyone in customer service will be next to impossible for awhile.

MS vs Apple - New Products

Microsoft introduces a new MP3 player into a crowded market and after 8 months (?) they hope to have shipped a million (not sold, as in being in the hands of a paying customer, but shipped, as to retailers).

Apple releases a smartphone into a crowded market and they sell well over a million on the first day! (OK, hasn't happened yet, but it will.)

I love it. :)

Did you read the ZFS thread? Now THAT is news...

I believe that you can use iTunes to do everything needed to activate the phone and get signed up. Perhaps the stores will try to get as many as they can to go this route. I wouldn't want to though. I'd want to be using my phone when I walk out of the store. But some may do that.

I don't know what world your living in, but your completely wrong there. GSM is GSM. The only major difference between carriers is which bands are being used. An unlocked quad band phone can be used on any GSM carrier. Period.

Additionally, for your information, AT&T and T-Mobile SHARE many coverage areas.

Your right about visual voicemail being tied to AT&T. But so what. An iphone will still be able to dial your number and allow you to punch in your voicemail code. It's still a phone isn't it? Yes, you might lose some specific features, but an unlocked iPhone will be able to be used as a phone on ANY GSM network. T-Mobile, AT&T, Japan, Europe, wherever.

The rep might not know anything (which I stated), but your seriously misinformed yourself.

I said it before and I'll say it again, 3 million is a number the BusinessWeek pulled out of their behind. Merill Lynch ran a report just a few days ago that said 200-300k for the initial shipments. I'm much more inclined to believe that number.

Summary at my blog

Read about it at MacNN

GSM is GSM. 4 different world wide band 850 MHz, 1900 MHz, 900MHz, and 1800 MHz but they are the same standard and fully compatible. The Cingualr GSM phone doesn't work on T-mo network because the phone's software is locked to the Cingualr ATT network.

I bet the Apple stores will be the best place on the first day. The other places will sell out too fast.

That's not what Jobs says. He said the stores will be packed, so head to your AT&T store.

Also, good luck to anyone who thinks they can get their hands on one without camping out. Unless you live in the middle of nowhere, I don't think it's going to happen. I have a feeling that this is going to be even crazier than the Wii/PS3 launches.

So is 3 million considered a lot? I REALLY don't want to camp out, but I will if I have to.

Hard to say. Initial Sony PS3 US shipment was 400,000 units and that wasn't really enough.

But that's comparing Apple to Orange - pun intended. I think the sales of iPhone will be brisk and supply will remain tight.

You guys amuse me...

According to folks here the US has 50 million more people (The population is closer to 300M than 350)...

And the silliness of acting like Apple expects to sell 3 million phones in a day just because they may have 3 million in their inventory is just too much.

I doubt they have 3 million but it'd be great if they did, nobody really profits from lack of supply in this case.
