3 months iCloud storage free after upgrading to 50gb?

When did Apple start providing 3 months free iCloud storage for upgrading to a paid tier? I spoke to apple support via web chat and they had no idea what is happening. Even the email says that there is 3 months free. I have tried googling it and nothing comes up.

I think it's for people who have not upgraded at all from the free tier. Saw an article recently about Apple giving away ONE month free of a higher tier to those who are on the free one. No idea how 3 months has come about, though...
