It's two steps now on my 7

1. Hold your finger on the home button. Nothing happens.
2. Press the button. System wakes up and unlocks

Or
1. Raise to wake, wakes up the system.
2. Hold your finger in the home button. System unlocks.

Flawed login

1. Wake iPhone (tap or raise to wake) - not a step but a natural process on current phones
2. Facial ID to unlock - happens automatically
3. Swipe up to open - oh no you have to swipe oppose to touch, get over it

Speaking of Accessibility features, (which Apple excels at) with TouchID, there is Touch to Open toggle (Rest Finger to Open) for those with limited mobility. TouchID button to home screen, no pressure required. I'd be really surprised if FaceID does not include a face scan to home screen for those with no mobility.
My thoughts exactly.

I’m looking at it of course at an angle for a quick calculation. But it’s flat on my desk with the camera pointing the ceiling. If facial ID can catch that i’d be in awe.

I believe they've already confirmed that you can do that. There are features within Face ID that you can turn on or off, such as 'attention detection', meaning the scan of your face can happen without you needing to look directly at the phone. It's far less secure, but if that's what you want, I believe it will be possible.

Does face ID work one handed?

From a demo I saw there are a few other motions unique to the X model. So a learning curve there also.

bro good luck getting any rational advice here. you will find people have a very selective filter in what they can objectively understand if it discredits their precious apple products.

People here over analyzing.

Face ID will blur the lines between locking and unlocking.

The phone is pretty much always unlocked when you are using it. So all you have to do is lift the phone and swipe up.

All you have to do is lift up the phone and you’re on the home screen as long as you’re looking at it (which is already likely and natural) and have turned on the “Look to Open” or similarly named option as Touch ID already has (“Rest Finger to Open”) in accessibility. The screen would simply turn on with raise to wake, scan your face, and do the swipe up motion for you.

However, I’m personally not sure if I want my phone to immediately go to the home screen as I like to look through all the notifications I’ve missed before unlocking my phone.

I'm interested to know at what the max distance and angle Face ID will be able to unlock at.

I did originally dismissed the idea as too slow, as I could have my phone unlocked before it's out of my pocket and good to go and without having to raise it closer than normal to read my face. If I'm sitting down, sure I'll bring it to my face normally, and with my normal grip waking it and swiping is easier than reaching for the home button. If I'm walking around my phone's pretty low (waist height), or sneaking a look in class/work under the table.

With using it down on a table I might want to check something quick, mail (fetch account), change song etc without having to pick it up, Just though I'd measure out, I'm sitting back in my chair I measured the top part of the phone 700mm away at around 25 degrees give or take to my face.
