We should demand Apple stop the practice. We should only pay when an actual service is rendered. Selling a replacement phone has nothing to do with ATT especially since there is no carrier subsidy. This is collusion between Apple and ATT.

It's similar to the collusion that makes Apple require a postpaid carrier account in order to use iUP in the first place. Really annoying.

Got my bill today and the 2 charges were there. Chatted with AT&T and both were credited.

Now if they could just fix the issue where I keep getting paper bills even though I am signed up for paperless billing which is causing me to miss the $10 ABP/Paperless credit every month, that would be great lol

$10 credit? You sure?

We didn't go through IUP, but ordered from Apple on AT&T Next. We haven't had to pay the $30 upgrade fee in the past, but this time they charged us for both phones. They also charged the next monthly installment on the 8 Plus phones because they hadn't received them in the mail yet. My husband called AT&T today, and they were very resistant to giving us any credit. With the 2 phone upgrade fees and extra installments, our bill was $139 higher than it normally is each month. The first rep he spoke with finally agreed to credit $80, which wasn't acceptable to us, so he asked for a supervisor. The supervisor managed to disconnect him when supposedly putting him on hold. So, he called back, and the rep said they could credit $50! Right....asked for a supervisor again, who also was very resistant and kept putting up arguments as to why the charges were correct, but eventually relented and credited the upgrade fees and the installments on the old phones. She made a snippy comment that we should not expect the upgrade fees to be waived in the future. My husband used to work in Verizon's call center, so he knows how to be the squeaky wheel. I think sometimes you just really have to be persistent. We were prepared to go into an AT&T store if necessary. Next time we will just move our SIM cards if we can and possibly avoid this hassle.

ATT totally screwed me on my 1st bill with the phone upgrade and my plan upgrade. They overbilled by $116... They quickly removed but the charges were buried on page 74 or something and if they do this and get someone who doesn’t really pay close attention they can make tons of extra $$... no oversight of their billing practices...\

Both Apple and the carriers are to blame.

When getting the next phone or any phone where a line is not being created there is no service provided that demands a fee.

For example, lets say I buy a phone from eBay and move my SIM into it. That is not an upgrade or a new line. Therefore, the carrier is entitled to nothing.

Apple is, however, telling the carrier to charge a fee and that is not acceptable unless the line is really NEW.
[doublepost=1538830876][/doublepost]I used the chat service to have an agent remove the $30. I have a FAN account which includes no charging of activation fees.

When pressed this point the agent said the upgrade fee was not considered an activation fee....what?

Both Apple and the carriers are colluding for profit and they dont care about you at all. Sure wish there was some way to bring legal attention to this practice.

Bingo.....what percentage of activation dollars are kicked back and creditedto Apple, Inc.......it didn't appear on the Appl invoice from order night for Shi#@ & giggles or free.......
Apple is in #Collusion #Ca-hootswithcarriers

I got AT&T to waive $30 upgrade fees this morning! First time on IUP preorder(with sim card) on launched .Did the swaped out the old sim card to new iPhone XS Max before turn on... so phone worked(no need to call Att to active) but still got charged for the $30+tax fees .

I was successful in getting them to credit two upgrade fees plus taxes. I got the text showing the updated balance, but online it is not showing the credit yet. There is another 11 days before auto debit, so I will watch.

AT&T is absolutely refusing to waive the three fees on my account (watch and two iPhones).

Been a customer for something like 15 years and haven't even been so much as a day late on any bill in all 15 years. And, they're refusing to waive it.

I'm beyond pissed.

Edited to add: after spending way too long on the phone with AT&T, they removed the fees. Not without a fight though...

We have AT&T

Thought we had made it through without getting the fees charged....nope.

I guess they waited until the billing cycle ended and they created the statement.

On the phone with them now...

"Who is your current TV provider?"....*****

...he's trying to change my account services....secretly...making up some story about his system freezing as he's trying to pull up my account. I told him I'm on YouTubeTV for $35/month. He comes back and says he can give me AT&T TV service for $110/month but 50% off and then because I'm such a good customer, discount that down to $30/month.

Me: "No, I'm happy with YTTV. I didn't call to discuss my TV service, I just want to have my fees removed." --starting to get angry...

Long time on hold, but he goes over the fees and says $60 (2 lines) is above his limit to give me an adjustment so he has to ask his manager...on hold again.

Gives me a case number, he's going to "prioritize it" and I should receive a response soon, on whether they will waive the charges.

I have a bad feeling about this.

Anyone else get this? I have ordered with IUP the last couple years, but this is the first time I am seeing an upgrade charge...
It's because the upgrade program is tied to the carriers. Apple doesn't offer the upgrade program to the unlocked iPhone.

I just saw that my AT&T bill was generated online I went through the chat and they gave me a courtesy credit for the $30 upgrade fee. I have done this every year and it’s worked like a charm. I have been a customer of Att since it was Pacific Bell wireless in November 1997 pay every bill on time never late so I think they can afford to give me a $30 courtesy credit once a year. I recommend that people do it through the chat process. Took all of about seven minutes and you can email yourself a copy of the chat conversation.

They don’t call it a waiver of the upgrade fee what they do is they say they can give you a courtesy credit for the amount of the upgrade fee

AT&T must be digging their heels in now. I chatted with "Beverly" and her manager "Sarah"..."our hands are tied". On the phone now with "Brandon"... thisclose to taking our business elsewhere.

"Brandon" is the MAN! He credited it off, no problem!

I also just used the AT&T online chat and was successful in getting the $30 upgrade fee waived. My bill total was already lowered back to what I normally pay each month.

My $30 fee just came through on current bill. I am going to chat and see if I can get the 'courtesy credit'. You figure 1 million people pay the fee without question, they can afford to waive a few.

The phone is tied to the carrier not IUP.

Is Apple getting a kickback from the carrier?

Okay, just to clarify. . . When I get my new phone on Friday, if I just change the SIM card, my phone will work and I’ll save the fee?

Forgive me; I’m usually not so obtuse. But this is my first time buying a phone outside of AT&T. I paid for it up front through Apple, but I thought I would have to take it to AT&T afterward to be switched over. (I’m a business customer, though I don’t want to be, and so Apple can’t do it for me.)

This method has worked for many folks, but recently some have said they were still billed the upgrade fee. In my experience this has worked. So what do you have to lose and if it doesn't just call in and ask them to waive the fee.

Yeah I am on AT&T and called them about this as I am on a Corporate Discount plan that is supposed to eliminate fees. This is a new one they have imposed this year. The CSR told me it was because they had to update all the towers with my new phone information, what a crock.

Obviously, I haven't gotten my XR yesterday, but I finally decided to setup my Apple Watch with AT&T. Initially, I was told there was an activation fee, but I asked them to waive it and they did.

They also confirmed that all I had to do was switch the SIMs card to change phones.
