I miss their Google Play editions instead of the Nexus line being separate phones.

I would be all over a Google Play Edition Note 5 or Galaxy S6 Edge +

Might look like at a Moto X pure edition instead.
Love the S6 Edge, but I love the Note5 even more because of the pen and being able to take notes even with the screen off. The pen is like some magical wand when holding it above the screen it still highlights the screen. If I can get a deal today I will be buying it. I like deals.

Poor implementation of Android phones across the OEMs is mostly to blame for this, I fear.

The Nexus program can't get bigger fast enough.

I feel that Google realizes their mistake of letting Android roam free and are now trying to take the reins back. I've noticed that Google has been pushing the Nexus phones heavily since the 6p and 5x came out. I've seen tons of very well-made ads on TV, and Google is pricing these phones VERY competitively. I think they want to push that laggy, bug-ridden stereotype of Android away and replace it with a stock, premium experience that will get people to see Android for what it really is and possibly even convert some iOS users.

I'm glad Google is doing this. This will force Apple to really compete with these new Nexus phones and the clean, fast builds of stock Android they come with.

Not surprising. I personally know quite a few people who have made the switch in 2015. People are sick of buying "flagship" android phones and having them work like garbage in 6 months with poor manufacturer support and no software updates.
So if all these folks are switching from Android yet the Android market share is stable where is android getting their new users from?

30% of the people who use Apple's trade-in program to trade their Android smartphone get a new iPhone probably doesn't amount to a millimousefart compared to the total number of Android users.

wonder who many % of Apple haters on MacRumors switch?

30%, but they won't tell anybody.

Besides the obvious Apple integration, once Apple released the larger phones Android had to start struggling.
Too many OS and not maintained in a consumer friendly way.

Agreed that Apple will face an uphill battle soon , unless iPhone 7 can make you fly or print money with it.
I don't see any feature that would make me wait and buy a 7.

I am still on a 4S and it does what I need, BUT my eyes are getting bad and I need a larger screen, plus it is possible to do more on a larger screen.

As for the design, yes currently weak in my book, but since I always slap cases on my phones it's hidden anyway.

Waiting for my local ATT to get a space gray 6S plus 128GB in stock , which supposedly is next week.

Then I will run that into the ground until the iPhone 8 or 9S is at 512 GB.

Maybe by then we'll just have an A13 chip implanted and can project what we need to work on onto our retinas from inside the body?

If Apple want iPhone 5 and 5S users to upgrade, they're going to have to offer a 4" iPhone with features like Apple Pay and 3D Touch. There is obviously a lot of demand for the huge new iPhones, but there is also obviously a lot of demand for the medium-sized iPhones like the 5 and 5S. Probably no need to reintroduce smaller iPhones like the 4 and 4S.

I switched from iPhone 5S to iPhone 6S.. The size difference isn't radical, it's barely noticeable to me. It seems like an odd reason to not get a new phone if you like everything else about it.

I do, thats one of the reasons i am sticking with my 5s.

The other reason is that the 6/6s just doesn't feel like a premium product, it feels more like an iPhone rip off. It looks and feels a bit cheap, not avery nice phone at all and not very desirable. I am not going to pay £539 for a 16gb phone that doesn't even look or feel top end quality, whereas the 5s just oozes quality with its glass and stainless steel construction, its still a beautiful phone and feels modern even though it is in its third year of production, and still pretty quick in use, never feels under powered.

I am hoping the 7 is a lot nicer to look at and has more of a premium build quality than the 6/6s. It's not all about power and gimmicky features, us non power users just want a nice phone.

The 5S is glass and aluminium, the 4 and 4S were steel. The 6 and 6 plus feel like premium devices with their heft and curved screen edges, the S versions are also lightning fast compared to the 5S, but not everyone can afford the upgrades. And after using a 6 or 6 plus the 5S just looks and feels like a kids toy now.

no they're just too stupid to realize how small the difference between a 4" and 4.7" really is.

they act as if it's the end of the world, literally.

For some of us its a deal breaker. Just like it was a deal breaker when it was the other way (EG 4 Inches is too small). The lack of a new 4 inch model is why i and 7 friends and family members of mine haven't upgraded.

How come they didn't state the percentage of iPhone users that switched to a new Android phone? How come Tim didn't mention when iOS 9 iPhone users will finally get their contacts fixed? I've never seen a company who toots their own horn more than Apple.

One of several possible reasons including:

1) Subsidized contracts going away.
2) Mature market.
3) "Good enough" factor.
4) Like you said, some people want a smaller phone, but not necessarily a smaller display.
5) Some people don't like the less than stellar 6/6s design and are hoping Jony makes a design comeback with the iPhone 7.

A huge group of people who I see carrying around old iPhones are teenagers whose phones are paid for by their parents. Without the ability to pay for a phone for themselves, they're stuck with the old phones that their parents handed down to them or the old iPhone that their parents got for them for free or cheap years ago until it breaks and/or their parents are willing to spend for a new one. And even then, the iPhone that they get will often not be the latest model.

Try to get an Android flagship in 4"...

Heck try to find a better phone than the 5S in 4"...

Hack... try to find a good Android phone in 4.7"!

Sony makes a "compact" version of their phone and it's still 4.6"

And OnePlus' only phones are 5.5"

It appears that small phones are going the way of the dodo. And I'm fine with it!

You obviously don't watch earning calls of other companies then do you.

Um...why would they discuss those things on an earnings call? Why would any company bring up negatives like that?

The Xperia compact is of a similar size to the 5S - it juts has a bigger screen.

And besides, Apple was filling a niche by selling a 4 inch phone, just because the Android market doesn't sell many small phones, doesn't mean Apple can't.

Apple - please offer a 3rd choice of phone size. I would have never bought an iPhone and gotten stuck in the ecosystem had I known you'd stop making small phones.

After waiting too long for ATV 4, I bought Google Nexus player over the summer. I used it for Netflix mostly. at first Netflix has a bug that would deactivate and require login again when you turn on auto-play-next-episode. it took them over 2 months to fix. I thought it was just one incident. well, Google release Android 6.0 Marshmallow this month. guess what. Netflix broke again. when playing a movie, it buffers to 25% and gets stuck there. basically, it is unusable and useless. I understand that this is Netflix app but Google needs to make sure app, especially netflix, is polished because customers think the app ultimately runs on Google device.

I have ATV 2 and 3 for many years and rarely got bugs which got fixed within hours or days at worst.

at this point, it is very hard for me to buy any Google hardware.

Irony that the 6 was such an ugly, huge slab of a thing that I switched to Android.

That is one of the strangest things I have ever heard. I don't care what the body of my phone looks like. I didn't care when I went to a plastic S4, and I didn't care when I came back to an easily scratched, metal iPhone 5. I suspect you are either just being overly dramatic, or have no need for a smartphone.

As long as they sell millions of 4.7" phones it's not worth the effort to design a new 4" phone and if they do you should only expect a spec upgrade to the 4C.

I love the speed of the 6s. I love how fast Touch ID is. I really love 3D Touch. I even love the new Harry Potter photos.
I hate the size of this thing. Its actually making me hate this phone. I think about going back to my old 5s everyday. I buy new iPhones every two years, but if the 7 has a four inch version, I'd buy it day of launch.

It's enough that it irritates me. Call me stupid, fine I don't really care. Why would I get a phone that irritates me? And yes, I've handled an iP6 plenty (my wife has one) and I've had to carry it around in my pocket and it just flat makes things uncomfortable. But after saying that, a couple of things could make me deal with it anyway. One, OIS (4.7") and two, mLED or QLED whatever is the official name.
