Exactly - some people like big screens some like small screens. Some people's needs are best suited by a small car, some people's needs are suited best by a large truck.

In the end I don't care how they do it - put an A9 processor in a 5C, 5S or shrunken down 6 case, just anything. Charge me a premium for it, but I just don't care. Otherwise its bye bye iPhone for me.

The problem is there isn't an other option. If there were 4 inch android phones I would be very tempted to swap, but they don't exist.

Well, there is the fact that a 4" iPhone would be the cheapest. Heck, there are people are 4.7" simply because the availability of the Plus model sucks during the first 3 months, or they just couldn't afford it. After all, for the same price as a 16GB 6 Plus, you could get a 64GB 6.

Also, the idea that 2/3rds aren't upgrading just because a huge number of people want a 4" phone is pure speculation and BS at this point. Let's conveniently ignore the fact iOS 9 runs on the iPhone 4S for goodness sake.

I'd buy a 4 inch iPhone even if it was the same price as the Plus. Assuming similar spec. And you're right we don't know why the 2/3 aren't upgrading, but I know a few people who don't want to because of the size. And even though I have upgraded I haven't sold my 5s yet because I'm thinking of going back to it. I haven't wiped it, and it's fully charged, ready for me to put my phone sim back into it, and pair my watch back to it.

At least they are actually proper switchers.

New thing in advertising seems to be to refer to a sale as 'someone switching'.

Selling a million tins of beans does not mean a million people have 'switched' to you! Arghh!!

It would seem, by the comments of some, that the new Nexus is Google/Android's best response to Apple. Elsewhere I read that Microsoft's hardware is their best response to Apple. So all of sudden Apple's model of integrated hardware and software is the shiznit and their two biggest rivals are trying to copy it?
Sorry, but the Nexus has a steep hill to climb to be significant in the near future.
The biggest threat to Apple is that folks will stop upgrading as often but that hasn't happened yet. Nothing is forever but Apple has brand loyalty, great marketing and attractive feature set.
When I read things "the Nexus program can't get bigger fast enough" my first thought is (sarcastically) "yeah, that'll do it" but my second thought is that it's a long, long wait for it to get big enough to really matter.

Well of course. A lot of people like myself was using android phone because of the nice screen sizes. Now that Apple has finally wised up and is offering different sized phone, people are going back to using iPhones.

If Apple want iPhone 5 and 5S users to upgrade, they're going to have to offer a 4" iPhone with features like Apple Pay and 3D Touch. There is obviously a lot of demand for the huge new iPhones, but there is also obviously a lot of demand for the medium-sized iPhones like the 5 and 5S. Probably no need to reintroduce smaller iPhones like the 4 and 4S.

I guess we'll see a 4'' iPhone in 2016.
Next year iPhone 5s will be replaced in the product line and although they may keep selling iPhone 6 at a lower price I think they'll replace 5s with a similar phone with Apple pay enabled. I'm not sure about 3d touch, but it is a possibility since iOS 10 may introduce new features based on the force press.

Well, basically, it seems that their solution to Apple is to try and out-apple Apple.

Which just goes to show that Apple was, and has always been right all along.

The difference between 4" and 4.7" is for me, and millions of others, the difference between a one-handed phone and a two-handed phone. I want a one-handed phone.
I just grabbed my 6s Plus one-handed and checked email/news/instagram. Granted I have semi-large hands. But since I made the jump the size has been nice.

Exactly, for people whose hands are large enough to use an iPhone 6S or 6S Plus one-handed, it's great. However, many people do not have such large hands and therefore want a 4" iPhone. I spent about an hour last year trying to use an iPhone 6 with one hand and was completely unsuccessful. There is no way I would switch to a 4.7" iPhone. If someone were to lend me an iPhone 6S on the condition that I could use it but not sell it, it would sit unused in a drawer. If my iPhone 5S were to die, I would buy another iPhone 5S.

It's funny that there is even discussion about this! It's like trying to convince someone that they could be comfortable with a larger shoe size!! I wear a 10.5 but all they sell is an 11.5!! :)
I upgraded from the 4s to the 6 and I love it, but even after a year of using it, still wouldn't have minded the smaller phone.
Yeah it's nicer to watch videos or read with the larger screen but at the end of the day the thing has to fit your hand and its nice if it can also fit in a normal pocket!!

I used to wonder why would any one buy an Android phone until I used a Samsung S6. It has highly improved from S3. The screen is for some reason better and brighter and the phone is faster and snappier. For most people (Joe consumer) who use the basic functions like twitter, instagram, browser, SMS, and calling ... it just might be the better phone.

If you are like me in the Apple eco-system stick with the iphone, but I no longer wonder.

I love the speed of the 6s. I love how fast Touch ID is. I really love 3D Touch. I even love the new Harry Potter photos.
I hate the size of this thing. Its actually making me hate this phone. I think about going back to my old 5s everyday. I buy new iPhones every two years, but if the 7 has a four inch version, I'd buy it day of launch.

Like you, I get a new iPhone every two years and am on the S cycle. In many ways I thought the iPhone 4S was the perfect size, I wasn't one of those people complaining the 3.5 inch screen phone was too small. I'd never get the Plus size iPhone, I think the iPhone 6S as at the upper size limit of what's viable.

I think it is obvious from reading this thread that there is still a very large market for a 4" iPhone, possibly even as high as 67%, but unlikely to be that high. Even if it was only 30% that is still one hell of a lot of phones. Apple have really shot themselves in the foot, lets hope the 7 comes in 3 sizes and then everyone will be happy.

Disagree on the Nexus comment. These Nexus phones are the best so far.

I would have to disagree with the above. I don't think the Nexus phones are anything special. I think the Sony Xperia are a much better screwed together phone and they get regular updates too.

As one of the people who wants an updated 4" iPhone because the 4.7" iPhone is too big for me to use one-handed, I have to disagree with the suggestion that the 4.7" iPhone 6S is "at the upper size limit of what's viable" because Apple have sold dozens of millions of the 5.5" iPhone 6 Plus. That is clear evidence that 5.5" is a viable size.

Phones, almost but not quite like shoes, are not a one-size-fits-all sort of product. Gloves might be a better example than shoes because gloves come in fewer sizes than shoes. I think three sizes of phones might suffice to keep perhaps roughly about 98% of post-pubescent users happy. I'm quite sure that two sizes do not suffice. For the moment, the iPhone 5S is keeping those customers with Apple, but it cannot continue to do so forever. Apple need to produce an up-to-date 4" iPhone supporting Apple Pay, 3D Touch, and LTE Advanced to keep that set of millions of customers from switching.

As a former Note 2 user I have to say that the only thing . . . . ONLY thing that really kept me from jumping ship back to iOS was the lack of a large screen phone. Now that we have one with the 6+ the options on the Android side look stellar, but aren't enough to make me switch back.

There are some features that I miss, but ultimately, I live my mobile life in iWork and iTunes so it's iOS for the win for now.

no they're just too stupid to realize how small the difference between a 4" and 4.7" really is.

they act as if it's the end of the world, literally.

It is all your fault.

People like you once said "There is almost no difference between 3,5 and 4 inch."

Look around what is happening now.

People are running with ****in' 5,5 or 6 inch and the size continues to grow.

But of course, there is no ****in' difference!!!!!!!!!

I should have stipulated that my comment regarding "upper size limit" viability only refers to me personally. Obviously there's a huge market for giant iPhones, I'm just not one of them.

Nor do I share the obsession for thin phones. I'd take an extra couple millimeters in thickness for longer battery life. The iPhone 5S wasn't exactly fat, and yet the subsequent redesign was thinner yet.

No indication the Nexus program will hope. The Nexus 6 was a massive dog.
My Nexus 6, purchased on release day was indeed a massive dog. One of the most well trained "dog's" I've owned.

Perhaps it's no coincidence that I'm a serious dog lover, obedience trainer (side hobby) and haven't met a dog I don't like yet. Just some are better than others :D

My Nexus 6 now?
It's _Still_ My Primary smartphone I carry everyday alongside my very nice iPhone 6 Plus. Always one to use as much display area as I have, the 6" display is drop dead gorgeous and adds to the speed at which I can get stuff done. Two phones, required for work, and twice the fun!

The new Nexus 6P will be in my hands shortly, and I rue it's "small" 5.7" display... oh well it was great while it lasted.
