I'd try Craigslist. My wife works at a hospital and they have this sale board. She posted my 32GB 4G and it sold for 220.

advice

as with any product,

if your not happy dont buy. and encourage others to do the same.

and stock will outstrip demand, next refresh you will have a better product at a lower price point.

remember the ipod touch is like a gateway device... stop selling these and you give people a reason to not buy the iphones.

simples.

No more 16GB, starts at $299 for 32GB...

Was hoping to get a 16GB for $199, I mostly stream and use it for app purchases.... (sigh)

Yeah I thought it was weird that they didn't have a cheap entry price point.

What a rip! I'm selling my 32gb 4th for $100.

While it is a good update to the Touch the price point and lack of GPS lead me to decide the iPad mini as being my choice and I can't help but think that many others will also. It's nice that it is there for those who must have it but the iPad mini seems the better choice now at these price points.

What iPad Mini???

----------

249 UK pounds for the base 5th gen... the iPad third gen is 399... may as well get the iPad right?

iPad doesn't fit in your pocket OR operate with one hand...

Not only is there no iPad Mini as yet, but how do we even know it will have the 3G/4G chipset? It could be a Wi-Fi only product like the iPod Touch, because clearly an iPad Mini is "home" entertainment device for media consumption. Who would even want cell Data for it? :p

Although I think they could have knocked off 30 or so bucks. 269 and 369, which would have put it 100 dollars more then a 3DS and just 20 more then a PSP Vita.

Other vendors are going for the lower prices AKA "race to the bottom" Apple continues to stay at the top of the price range. The problem is that with their update schedule, you end up with very little value. The IPT4 is only $50 less.

Who wouldn't pay an extra $50 for: A5, better cameras, siri, maybe Blue Tooth 4 LE ?

Makes the IPT4 a non-choice.

Also interesting that the iPT got the A5 when the A6 is available. Why have yester-years chip when the A6 is clearly out? Don't suggest cost without considering the fact that the pricing for everything else has dropped and the iPT5 stayed the same.

As far as prices go, the iPadMini might just kill off the iPT5. It should have everything the iPT5 has, in a 7" form factor.

With these prices, they've all but killed the iPT line.

I think $299 is too much for a device that's supposed to be entry-level iOS and marketed toward kids and teens to get them engrossed in the Apple ecosystem.
 Gee a lot of kids and teens are walking around with iPhones. I'm 56 and can't justify the cost of one so I'm still using my prepaid flip phone, which makes calls just fine. :)

But you're right, $299 seems kinda high even though that was the price of the original iPod touch.

Hey guys, you don't get it. 299$ for the better iPhone! That is no big deal.

Hey, it is no music player, it is an iPhone!

  • It looks better, the iPhone 5 design does not feel as "spot on" as this one
  • It is thinner, 6.1mm instead of 7.6
  • It is lighter: 88grams instead of 112
  • It comes in colours: white, black, aqua, gold, pink and red
  • It has a hook for an arm band
  • It has less pixel-bloat 5Mp for casual shooting is right (it covers your whole iMac 27 inch or MBPr screen)
  • It comes with 32 GB BY DEFAULT, the big brother only does 16!

Ok, the downside is NO GPS and NO SIM SLOT, but who cares? You have 400$ remaining (The sim one with 32Gb will probably do 699$ without plan) to buy a 10$ prepaid regular phone, a 80$ droid as mobile hotspot or you just be VERY MODERN, and ditch phone numbers, and call al your friends on Wifi Facetime!

If you buy an iPhone 5, you basically waste 400$ on
  • A GPS module (5$)
  • More aluminium (5$)
  • Maybe a little more battery (10$)
  • An A6 processor (30$)
  • A micro-sim receptor (5$)
  • A magic brain tumor wand (antenna) (15$)
  • 330$ more profit for Apple

BTW, why are USA plans so damn expensive? They start at 80$/month! That runs a complete family here in Europe.

Agreed, my 8 year old son wants an iPod touch for his 9 year old October birthday, and the 32gb version is overkill. Was hoping they would have a 16gb model for the market they are truly targeting.
I've got a 64gb 4th gen and won't be upgrading, mine was to replace an ageing 80gb classic earlier this year, but I have an ipad3 and a 2012 MBA so it is more my music player. I am worried buying him a cheap 4gen won't hack it for playing games, given the number of times mines bombs out in omnifocus and scramble...

My son is turning nine in October and wants the Touch as well. I was hoping for a 5th gen version for 199. Looks like he'll be getting something else.

Honestly with Apples crappy pricing on the new touch you're better off with a nexus 7 for you son. Its seriously a great alternative. Its very fast and smooth and much more future proof. The 4th generation iPod is on its last leg. Its performance is pretty bad.

The nexus 7 is a cooler thing to get anyway. I am sure your son will be ecstatic. Very easy to use as well. I absolutely love mine and my little cousin that's 4 picked it up and was playing his favorite game on it the other day. I left it on the table and found him using it all by himself.

I have the Nexus 7 and it's a great device.

$300 for 32GB iPod Touch 5 with all the new features is actually not too bad. When i bought my iPod Touch 4 8GB from Best Buy it was $225.

Technically you are right since the mini has not been announced we don't know what it will have. I believe I have seen photos of the shell that show the usual 3G cutout. I would have to believe it is coming from all the leaks - anyone who says it won't is putting their head in the sand. I agree the price points of the new Touch and the Mini look to be overlapping but who says that can't. People who insist on pocket size can get the Touch and people who want a larger screen (and probably 3G) can get the Mini. They are different devices and can occupy the same price tiers as Apple wins no matter which gets bought. That way they saturate the market.

Yeah but most people don't need 32gb and would rather have a lower price. The 4th gens that are cheaper are crap. They perform like crap. They don't have enough ram.

IPad mini? Are you kidding? There will be no iPad mini.

They have to, they'll be beat to a pulp in the market place if they don't. Remember, Apple has choked before.

Running these price points is a big risk. Don't tell me that ram prices haven't dropped over the last few years.

This market it far too young and fast moving for them to assume they'll always be on top. It wasn't that long ago when Android was a joke to them.

The Nexus 7 is a solid choice for people who want a cheap tablet, but I think its a poor recommendation over the ipod 5g.

The higher end $299 model only has half the storage space of the iPod, with no SD card option. I have an android phone, but I plan to get a new iPod Touch because androids app selection sucks, and there are dozens of iOS apps I miss that I want to use again. Many of the best apps aren't on android.

The 7" display is too large to be pocketable and truly portable, yet not nearly as ideal as a 9.5" tablet for gaming and watching movies. If i'm at home, i'd rather use my iPad, if im on the go, i'd rather use a pocket device.

The Nexus 7 also has its share of issues. It doesn't auto rotate into landscape mode, and the back is made of cheap plastic. Plus once you are used to the retina display, its hard to go back to other screens. I also don't like that it doesnt have a rear camera, and if i'm going to buy a tablet, i'd like to be able to have at least 3G internet on it.

ipod touch is basically a device parents can give their kids that is like an iphone with no cellular bill.

basically is the key word here.

a lot of people are still on contracts with other phones.

a lot of people live in regions that do not have carriers that support iPhone

myself, I am on a sprint family plan. i pay a whole $10 a month. Is it worth the extra $90 a month for me to have the iphone over the ipod? Since I don't use 4G very often, not really.

----------

32GB iPod Touch has always been $299. Reasonable considering you're getting a vastly improved device for the same price.

A 32GB iPhone 5 is $749.

I agree completely. I don't think it was an accident that Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal announced that an iPad Mini was coming this Fall shortly after the Nexus 7 keynote. That sounds more like a controlled leak to me. And yes, both devices could overlap on price, but there should still be a market for them. I have said elsewhere that if one suffers through similar pricing, it will be the Touch.

All this talk about the iPod Touch is for kids kills me. I'm 34 and the iPod Touch is great when used as a PDA.

Back of the nexus is not cheap plastic. Its a soft touch plastic. Its a premium material and used in automotive interior design as well. The top of the line nexus 7 is only 249 not 299. The screen on the nexus 7 is very high ppi. I doubt most consumers would notice the difference between it and the retina ipad. Its not like the ipad 2 vs ipad 3 where its extremely obvious. The nexus's screens pixel density is much closer to that of the ipad 3 then the ipad 2 is pretty much identical to the density of the retina macbook pro.
The autorotate thing is only restricted to the homescreen and thats easily fixed by installing nova/apex launcher or any of the other stock based launchers with extra settings.
