er how do you know how much ram is in the iPod 5th Gen?
I'm going to wait until i know the full specs before making a purchase.

I was saying the 4th gen does not have enough ram and because of apples strange pricing most people are going to end up buying the 4th gen.

Used iPhone 4 vs iPod Touch 5

You will pay much more then that with a contract.

And yes, now we will get a 100 replies stating how the Europeans get cheap contracts but, the OP is from the United States.

Not if you don't get a contract. The idea is you buy an iPhone 4S because its price and specs are so similar to the new iPod Touch - then you USE it as an iPod touch, WiFi only.

To be honest, that may be a reason to prevent Apple from this pricing much longer - you can't charge more for a new iPod Touch than a 2 generation old iPhone that does the same thing...

I was saying the 4th gen does not have enough ram and because of apples strange pricing most people are going to end up buying the 4th gen.

I admit that Apple was so unclear about this that in the first 12 hours, I totally misreported the iPod news, and wouldn't believe the situation until I finally verified pricing with the Apple store. First I thought the new iPod started at $199 with 16GB (logical). Then I noticed it started with 32 GB, and thought "great! - 32GB for $199!" Finally, I started to realize that the base model was the old model, and it would cost $300 for a new one.

Seriously, I was about to buy the new iPod Touch as the world's most pocketable point and shoot, competitive in price and quality to the Powershot 320 HS. But once I finally figured out that it would actually cost an extra $100, I nixed the deal.

Was it just me, or was the presentation not clear about this?

It is currently $549.00 (US) for a 16Gb unlocked 4S iPhone in the Apple store. Considering that you can get a 64Gb Touch for $399.00 (US), I can't see where it's worth it.

i doubt it, anyone buying now is buying the new models. why would they want last gen? its available yes, but they aren't the spot light or in all the media.

Most people don't know any better. They are likely buying it for their kids and would rather spend 200 instead of 300.

As many people have stated, you can't fit a tablet in your pocket (the Touch and tablets are different products).

The only big competition for the Touch are smart phones and not everyone wants a data contract.

A tablet also doesn't fit in the console of my car, which is where my Touch spends a lot of its time.

For those interested, the refurb 4th gen 32GB model is down to $209 from the Apple store. The 64GB model is $279. I just bought a 32GB model about 6 months ago, so I don't think I'll be getting a new one any time soon. I may wait until the 5th gen hits the refurb store and sell this one, though.

I had to look at it very closely with all the power points during the keynote, but I figured it out. I was disapointed because I planned on selling my old 4G and hopefully buying the base model. Now I have to spend an extra hundred out of pocket.

 Gee a lot of kids and teens are walking around with iPhones. I'm 56 and can't justify the cost of one so I'm still using my prepaid flip phone, which makes calls just fine. :)

But you're right, $299 seems kinda high even though that was the price of the original iPod touch.

For many people my age (23), the price of a phone with a data plan is the same as the electric bill. You're going to pay it because it's a necessity.

What should have happened with the iPod touch 5G:
8 GB- $99
16 GB- $199
32 GB- $299
64 GB- $399
128 GB- $499

I tried buying the new Touch from the US Apple store using a Zip Code from New Jersey. The total cost came $322.92 Which is the equivalent of around £200. You still are saving £49 which is quite a bit!!!

I'm not complaining, although I'd love to see those prices here :). What I'm interested in knowing is why they're more expensive here though?

That's not a fair comparison also it's because US sales tax is normally around 8% even if you were to buy it from the US and import it you would then have to pay import duty, we can only fairly compare prices pre any tax.

pre any tax we are paying a £24 premium over the US (£249 -VAT is £208, $299 is £184), the reason of the price difference is because they are a US company and they take into account currency fluctuations otherwise everytime the pound weakened against the dollar they would put the iPod touch up in price, which consumers would not like as all they would see is a price increase.

As many people have stated, you can't fit a tablet in your pocket (the Touch and tablets are different products).

The only big competition for the Touch are smart phones and not everyone wants a data contract.

But there are smartphones without data contracts. I have an unlocked Nokia N9 on a prepaid account without an expensive data contract.

I just want to know why I can get a purple Nano but not a purple touch! I would have ordered one already if only it came in purple  :p

The touch looks great this gen, and the camera would be a major draw card for me, but all the same this time round the iPhone is just too tempting. I've always wanted one and with the pricing plans being offered here in Aust. It'll work out the same on a contract as buying outright + my current prepaid usage.

What? There were no free iPods given away with any back to school programs this year or last. If you could find me a new in box 4th gen 8gb under $150 for sale by a company online or eBay, I'd be impressed because I sure can't find them!

You can get one refurbished from Apple for $150, which means it's basically like new. Just in case you are interested.

That's exactly what I did too- it's on the way. : )

Did they lower the price after the event last week? I remember them being a bit pricier - like in the $175 range.

Apple's pricing for the iPod line is just so ridiculous right now. They didn't drop any prices and increased the entry point for the iPod Touch.

I mean is a 16GB nano really worth $150 at this point?

Even worse, the Classic and the Shuffle. $50 for a 2GB faceless player? Either bump it to 4GB or drop the price. Classic should have been bumped this year but somehow Apple thinks the device is worth the same price it was in 2009 for the EXACT same device.

Every year the alternatives look better and better...

128GB is about 3 years overdue, there is no way 64GB is worth the same as it was 3 years ago...yet Apple seems to think it is.

Apple's pricing for the iPod line is just so ridiculous right now.

Three years ago, a just released iPod Touch 3rd gen 32Gb was $299 and the 64Gb was $399 (the same as the pricing now). The cost of tech goes down over time but the new 5th gen has so much more then the 3rd gen and there is a thing called inflation. Anyone who didn't expect this pricing doesn't know Apple.

Yeah the 5th gen is so much more... basically a iphone 4s without the phone, which is a year old.

Inflation has nothing to do with it if this were the case we'd still be paying 60+ for 8gb usb memory stick. Prices have come down they have NOT gone up, the profit margin is larger for Apple now that it has ever been.

Especially when 7 inch tablets potentially threaten it's market, yes they have their own markets (portability vs a need for a larger screen) but they do overlap.

The fact the ipod touch is at the same price points it was in 2009 for the same capacities are utterly ridiculous. We should be at 16/64/128 with the price points of
16 - 200
64 - 300
128 - 400

Things have changed since 2009, 256kbps DRM free music and high definition video, stuff that takes double the space.

Don't try to sell me on iCloud either you cant connect everywhere, connection quality varies, you are forced to rent space rather than own it, bandwidth limitations, potential problems with down times and security.. cloud in its current state is more of a back up service rather than a complete storage solution.

If it weren't for my investment in iTunes store and iTunes smart playlists I would probably be looking for an alternative.

To everyone saying buy a Kindle Fire HD or Nexus 7. Here are the facts...

If the Nexus 7 was going to have a 32GB option it would be $299 and the Kindle Fire HD is $299 for 32GB so storage wise it's a fair fight.

Other specs...

Screen - iPod and Kindle are similar ppi just different sizes. Nexus 7 doesn't compete

Ram - Likely Kindle and Nexus 7

App Store - iOS

Design - Preference, I like Apple's

Camera - iPod

Earphones - iPod

Storage - Equal

Apple, Google, Kindle Online Services - iCloud and the App Store/preference

OS - iPod or Nexus 7 win this one for me/preference

SOC (A5 vs Tegra 3 vs Kindle SOC) - The A5 beats the Tegra 3 and processor wise it seems the A5 is about equal to Kindle's SOC. Unaware with graphics

Optimisations of the OS (to use spec to full potential) - iPod

So ultimately for me I would like the iPod to have a 1GB of ram but otherwise the iPod is a winner!

Hi guys, I have a question, I'm considering to pre-order 5th iPod touch, but the prices on these new models are higher, for example 32Gb model here in Portugal is 329 Euros right now, when the price for previous 4th 32Gb iPod touch in the past was 299 Euros. What am I paying this extra 30 Euros for? and how do you think, when the unit comes to stores will the price become 299 as usually?

8 GB- $99
16 GB- $199
32 GB- $299
64 GB- $399
128 GB- $499

Is this a joke? Dropping the capacity from 16gb to 8gb isn't going to magically drop the price to $99. I doubt apple could even make the Nano for much less than that.

I have been carrying a iPod touch together with my non-smart cellphone for many years. And the total weight is less than one iPhone 4S. And both devices fit in my pocket easily.

I don't see why I need to pay the exorbitant AT&T data rate. Also I want to have full control over my data plan, and not being forced into a 24-month data contract. When I need to use the touch on the Internet, I tether it to my cellphone.

With the new iPhone 5, I still do not see the benefit of combining a cellphone with iPod touch into one device. I am planning to keep my old cellphone, but just upgrade my touch, there is no contract to sign, no commitment. A much better deal overall.

Where as there is no way I want to carry a Nexus 7 in my pocket, and the Android interface sux. :D
