Apple clearly thinks that the 4th gen is just fine (and I can't help but say thank you to them for bumping the minimum up to 16gb) and that if you want the latest and the greatest you're gonna have to pay up for it. The pricing schedule hasn't gone up for the new Touch, the 4th gen 32gb were the same price two days ago. They may as well have named the 5th gen the iPod Touch Elite, but then that would sound like a MS product. Oh wait, how about the iPod Touch Elite HD Pro?

Back of the nexus is not cheap plastic. Its a soft touch plastic. Its a premium material and used in automotive interior design as well. The top of the line nexus 7 is only 249 not 299. The screen on the nexus 7 is very high ppi. I doubt most consumers would notice the difference between it and the retina ipad. Its not like the ipad 2 vs ipad 3 where its extremely obvious. The nexus's screens pixel density is much closer to that of the ipad 3 then the ipad 2 is pretty much identical to the density of the retina macbook pro.
The autorotate thing is only restricted to the homescreen and thats easily fixed by installing nova/apex launcher or any of the other stock based launchers with extra settings.

You can argue that the plastic is "premium", personally I think thats a stretch. And installing a 3rd party app that will only eat up more of your memory just so you can auto rotate? No thank you. And you're comparing the resolution of the Nexus to the iPad 2, but you do realize that the iPod touch screen is retina, unlike iPad 2, right? I definitely notice the difference.

Quibbles with hardware really arent the thing. The main point is content. Content is the most important thing, Apps are king. Without apps, you basically have a PDA from 1995. Androids selection of apps can't even compare. I used my 4g iPod touch way more than I am using my 2 month old android phone, because of apps.

I would rather buy a Nexus 7 for $199. With 4.3" cell phones on one hand, and 7" pads on the other, I think the days of the iTouch are numbered.

All this talk about the iPod Touch is for kids kills me. I'm 34 and the iPod Touch is great when used as a PDA.

Amen! I've been a software developer for decades and started developing for iOS. I'm selling the product as a professional business tool. It's actually a powerful computer that fits in your pocket, not a toy. In fact I don't even like gaming on it, the screens too small.

The new iPad mini, if it comes, should be closer to the iPod price.

Is apple still planning on even releasing an ipad mini? I thought there were rumors about it being later in october or something. Are just not even bothering with the ipad mini now?

If the iPad mini does come in October, I think Apple will drop the 32gb 4th gen from the lineup and replace it with the 5th gen at a $249 for 32gb and $299 for 64gb price point as to make room for the $299-$349 iPad mini.

(They would have to give a credit to people that bought it before the mini was announced. It's happened before, just look at the original iPhone's price drop where they gave everyone $100 dollars at the Apple Store).

Get the 4th generation version for $199?

Kind of a crappy deal, buying 2 year old hardware for $200. You can get a 32GB 4th gen for $150 off craigslist, and 8GB ones are practically given away because of the back to school promo.

Even rolls royce uses soft touch plastics in their cars. Not sure why you think plastic automatically equals cheap. Apex launcher is like 2mb. If you can't spare that then you have some major issues. It also looks identical to the stock launcher. In fact its source code is from the stock launcher. They just added some more customization options which are completely optional. You could simply turn on rotation and call it a day. You can even side load the patched stock launcher in 2 seconds. No root required.

There are essentially just as many apps available on android as there is on iOS. In fact that are categories apps that you can't even get on iOS like keyboards, widgets, emulators, file managers, and browsers. I have never had a problem finding an app I needed. I even have an emulator for a ti-89 on here. Try doing that on iOS. Android has no lack of apps. There are over 500000 in the play store alone.

It costs £249 in the UK and only about £180 (the equivalent) in the US???

Why don't they make a standard price for every country. I may just get a family friend to ship one over from the states or wait for Christmas sales before I get one. It seems pointless at that price!!!

It's always been a fair bit cheaper to buy stuff in the States. Look at the 4S unsubsidised before, 64gb was £699 and $849 lol. Even after US tax it was a good 1/200£ cheaper.

It's just something you learn to accept :(.

Also I don't think it will get any cheaper, do iPod touches ever go on 'sale'?

Agreed.

I'm almost thirty and refuse to get into a 190 dollar family plan contract with a big carrier. I use straight talk and an ipod touch. I rarely every find myself wishing I had a data plan. There is wifi at work, home and most places I need it.

As many people have stated, you can't fit a tablet in your pocket (the Touch and tablets are different products).

The only big competition for the Touch are smart phones and not everyone wants a data contract.

I can definitely fit the rumored iPad mini in my purse. For apps that I need in my pocket I have my 4th gen touch that is still being sold. It's just amazing me that the 4th gen touch will make it 3 years on store shelves. I bet 99.9% of touches sold for Xmas gifts will be the $199 16gb ones. People see the $299 price and pick the cheaper model, same reason people bought 8GB models. Most who bought the 8gb were satisfied with it too.

Seeing the 5th gen price tag I really don't want to drop $300 on a new touch that does the same things my 4th gen does with upgrades that I will not use much of.

However it would be nice to have access to iPad apps for around $300 which would give me enough incentive to shell out for the iPad mini. I don't need 3G/4G and I don't need a huge screen since I can see my touch just fine. In fact I just typed this whole message on my touch.

What I do need more of is ram, my primary use for this device is running apps, so I will expect the iPad mini to perform in that regard.

What? There were no free iPods given away with any back to school programs this year or last. If you could find me a new in box 4th gen 8gb under $150 for sale by a company online or eBay, I'd be impressed because I sure can't find them!

Honestly, all this talk about price overlap between the ipod touch 5g and the ipad mini does not seem likely to happen. Think about it, this is Apple we are talking about. I have read in some recent articles that the ipad mini may replace the ipad2! Yes, that's right, which means the ipad mini will likely be priced in the $349.99 - $399.99 price range. Apple does not want to eat away at the sales of its own products by pricing two differnent products at the same price point, they are all about making money, and because Apple is a premium product I would not be surprised if the ipad mini was priced at $399.99, I mean think about it, did you guys think the ipod touch would be $299? NO! The only thing that this leaves me wondering is that at these price points, Apple will not be very competitve with the new sub $200 tablets such as the Nexus 7, but then again this is Apple that doesn't really care who the competition is becaues they already have a huge fan base.

Agreed that it doesn't really compete against the tablets. As a side note, if you want a great deal, the RIM Playbook offers 64 GB storage for the same price as the Nexus 7 16GB. Nexus 7 is overpriced! ;) (/sarcasm)

More importantly the new iPod Touch finally has a camera that's good enough to replace the cheap P&S cameras for many. For those who have wi-fi on the go and need a pocketable device, it looks almost unbeatable.

I have had the ipad 1, 2 ipad 2s and now the ipad3 with verizon. But i bought a nexus 7 and it does EVERYTHING the ipad 3 does and in many cases better with androids new os jelly bean is superior in many ways to ios. Plus most of my ipad apps have an android play store equivalent. The screen to my eyes is equal if not sharper to my ipad retina and it is very fast.

Yep, I'm getting one if it has at least 512Meg of RAM (hoping for 1 Meg).

I will however wait a month or so before buying and let other people beta test the new Touch :).

$299 is £184 add the VAT makes it £220, so we are paying a £30 premium (US prices don't include VAT)

IMO the 32GB 5th gen is the same price as the 4th gen 32GB was (before it was reduced) so there is little to complain about on price in the UK.
32GB is the minimum size I would want to buy anyway, 16GB just fills up after you've added music, apps and a video or two.

For people saying a 7inch tablet is a better option are you crazy? the size difference alone makes them both incompatible as comparisons!

Yeah but most people don't need 32gb and would rather have a lower price. The 4th gens that are cheaper are crap. They perform like crap. They don't have enough ram.

er how do you know how much ram is in the iPod 5th Gen?
I'm going to wait until i know the full specs before making a purchase.

I tried buying the new Touch from the US Apple store using a Zip Code from New Jersey. The total cost came $322.92 Which is the equivalent of around £200. You still are saving £49 which is quite a bit!!!

I'm not complaining, although I'd love to see those prices here :). What I'm interested in knowing is why they're more expensive here though?
