I burnt out three LG Ultrafines that way recently. First one lasted a little under a year, sent it back for repairs and it burnt out in only dive weeks. Replaced it with a new one it lasted a little over a week, the replacement less than 24 hours.

Right now typing this on the Asus Proart 4K 32" as I didn't have the budget for the 6K nor the patience to wait as I need a monitor for work.
Woah did you figure out what caused your ultrafines to burn out this way? My 5k ultrafine has lived through maybe 5 various work and personal MacBooks over the years, and I never had issues with it.

I hope your mac is okay, I imagine that would be a nightmare to try and get a third party to pay for your computer's repair bills.

Sad news, after only a week of use : my Thunderbolt port burnt o_O

A few hours ago I smelled something weird, at first I thought something in my apartment was burning but didn't know what it was since the monitor was still working.

Later I restarted my Mac and noticed the monitor stayed off, I plugged it with HDMI/Thunderbolt and it was working again. I tried a bunch of cables, plugged it into another Mac but the screen kept saying NO SIGNAL.

Then I noticed this :
So how did you have it connected? What type and brand of cable? Could have been a faulty unit, which would be disappointing.

wow that's terrible and dangerous. did it damage the mac at all?
Luckily the Mac seems fine, all ports work

It was connected with the Thunderbolt 4 cable that came with the monitor. I'm now using it with a USB-C to Displayport cable, I sent an email to Asus, not sure what will happen now and how long it's gonna take. I hope I won't have to pay shipping fees from my own pocket

Whew! Keep us updated on your support experience. I don't really expect GREAT support from Asus, but I'd assume for such a cut and dry case like this, they'd take care of you w/ no money from your pocket.

If that's not the case, then we all may as well be getting the Kuycon!

Wow... that's very serious. I would have expected something like that from Chinese goods, but from ASUS... man, oh man.

Yeah tbh I'm not sure what to do at the moment (I'm still in the legal 14 days period to send it back and get a full refund). Maybe I just got extremely unlucky but this experience does not make me want to trust Asus anymore.

I remember a member here who had an issue with their Kuycon and they just shipped him another monitor right away before he could even return the damaged one, so Kuycon support might actually be better than Asus.

Wow, I'm really really sorry to hear this. Merci for posting the displayed screen resolutions - it was nice to see that the default is 1:2 like with the Apple Pro XDR 6K display (before I saw what happened to the Thunderbolt port).

you should 100% return (and maybe repurchase) instead of going through warranty. You have much more options/flexibility doing this, and will probably end up with a (guaranteed) new machine faster.

Would return it for refund!

I guess these burnt out Thunderbolt ports are usually because of laptop charging?
If so, that's a concern, because I can imagine somebody buying one for a Mac Mini or Mac Studio and not relying on the charging function for a few years, then getting a MacBook Pro and 'Bam,' trouble.

No idea, the cable was dead the first time, so I replaced it. We will see if the Asus lasts.

It was also the port that offered power delivery of up to 96 watts. That's very worrying if something happens there. ASUS will certainly argue that the wrong Thunderbolt cable was used, but if I understood the affected user correctly, he used the original ASUS TB4 cable to connect his Mac.

Unless there are significant reports of these things failing all the time, I would not worry right now. Mine's still working so far. 😅

Sure, not this particular model though. I'll get worried if more reports appear.
If you look at these different Asus ProArts, they look pretty much the same. In fact, I bought a refurb 32" 4K, and received a 32" 1440p model from Amazon, because some scammer had swapped out the identical looking 1440p unit that fit perfectly in the 32" 4K box. So, I would not at all be surprised if they used the exact same parts for the ports and power supply.

Don't buy it then, wait for the LG (which I'd have preferred too).

Yes, the LG was my preference just based on locks, but the Asus software support for macOS was looking interesting. However, with these reports of overheating Thunderbolt, I'm strongly leaning away from Asus again.

Which model is this?

Edit: Oh, I see from another of your posts in a different topic that it was the Asus PA32QCV 32” 6K. That is disturbing. I’ve got one on preorder.

Has anyone used the Smart KVM functionality with this or other Asus monitors? I'm curious how well it works in practice if you are switching between two macbooks in clamshell mode. I believe you are only charging the macbook via the KVM that's currently active, so does the other just go to sleep as soon as you are switched off of it?

I imagine this would work just fine for Mac Minis/Studios, but I'm curious if this turns out to be annoying for laptops where its acting like its waking from sleep every time you switch. Is it still a useful feature?

Quick update about my issue :

The port doesn't look burnt anymore, I don't know how this wasn't permanent but the port looks normal again. It still doesn't work tho. I returned the monitor to the shop I bought it from yesterday and I am now waiting for them to inspect it and give me a full refund.

I just heard from Asus more than a week after I filled their support/replacement form, with every info they could possibly need (serial number, photos, details about what happened, invoice etc) and they just replied with a default message saying they're sorry for what happened to my "computer" and they invited me to fill a form... which is exactly what I filled up a week ago.
