Must be a US thing. When I went to see Thor the queue for the 3D screening was longer than the 2D one, and that was just Thor so not exactly the benchmark 3D film of the decade! The ticket guy said on big titles like this they see a lot more 3D tickets than 2D...
But here a 3D film is £1 ontop of a £7-10 ticket. You can't even buy cinema snacks for £1.

Personally I love it. My eyes are quite bad but I get the effect. Always pulls me in more than 2D but I know it's not for all films. But when it works - I'm totally absorbed. During Thor I didn't even realise that my girlfriend had put her arm around me.

Tron Legacy. IMAX. 3D. There's nothing like it.

3D is a blast. I love it. God, a lot of you sound like a bunch of grouchy old farts.

What sort of movies do you like Lee?

I can see why it might appeal on big budget animation movies and CGI-heavy blockbusters, but it would pretty much suck for film noire and more thoughtful stuff.

It's a gimmick and a fun-fair ride.

I like all kinds of things, from action/sci fi to David Lynch, Cronenberg, Kubrick, etc. There's space in my life for all of them. Personally, I think a Lynch film in 3D could be quite unsettling. Of course it's a gimmick! And it's a damn fun gimmick! :)

Then don't have it. But don't ruin it for the rest of us who do.

How do you get to 'not have it' if the local cinema only offers a movie in 3D then? Often there's no choice - so you have to put up with the loss of colour saturation, loss of brightness, flicker, eyestrain and extra cost.

According to the Boston Globe, many cinemas are actually leaving the 3D lenses in place during 2D movies - so you get the dimming etc. during regular movies too.

To continue with the analogy... the chef dollops ketchup on your hotdog, your filet-mignon and your desert, whether you like it or not.

3-D in its current form sucks. There is no depth perception and we are forced to look at what the director wants us to be focused on. To me 4k is the real answer, the resolution will be so high that we will see true depth without the need for 3-D effects.

Despite the stupid story and characters?

Yes, are we discussing 3d in movies, or the content in the movies?
The effects in Avatar is NOWHERE near Transf 3 3d effects...

But why even bother discussing this? You always have a choice, its like saying, im glad Porsche stop making convertibles cause it ruins my hair, then buy the full cab instead...
If you dont like 3d, then see the normal vers, jeeze!!

My TV

Is 3D but I have never used the feature at all. A friend came round a while back equipped with the glasses and described the TV picture as "Awesome" I tried it out and was less than impressed.

I guess for some blockbusting sic-fi stuff it might be good (I'm an old Trekkie) but most of the stuff I like was never shot in 3D anyway and I don't think these can be converted?

At least my ATV bill is really low, as all the stuff I like is cheap :)

And how will that much data be delivered to you?

A phone line? Compressed over a cable? Glass?

OK for DVD's, but a pain for broadcasters/cable/etc.

Most likely delivery means: satellite TV, with optical-fiber cable TV as a secondary source.

Mind you, I'm not sure if you want to see the differences between the type of grasses grown on a field with QFHD, though.

Cable companies already compress the crap out of HD and they have fiber lines in place. Before we get even higher resolutions or even more 3-D channels that take double the bandwidth the whole analog spectrum will need to be shut down. I don't see that happening for a long while yet when the only thing being broadcast is straight HD with no standard def simulcasting.

Where in the world do you live where there's no option? I went to see Captain America opening weekend, and one theater was showing it in 3D, the other in 2D- in the same cinema. It seems odd to me that you live somewhere with no option. Even in the small town where my parents live in Ohio, there's the option with 3D movies.

It was overpriced for what it is and has no real "killer" game yet, so they're cutting the price. But to cater for early customers who paid full they're giving away 20 free games (10 of those will never be made available to the public). The 3DS game season kicks off near Christmas.

What's wrong with that? Sales are on the up now, they're selling out all over my nearest town and city.

It wasn't selling because of a wildly high pricetag. It was £230 in the UK, now it's £150 and flying off shelves. A new Playstation is out later in the year at £280 with a 2D display. When that doesn't sell can we blame 3D?

3D is a blast. I love it. God, a lot of you sound like a bunch of grouchy old farts.

Hear hear!
Just bought Ocarina of Time 3D today. I've never had the chance to settle down on my own and play a 3D game as it was intended. Such an amazing experience so far. As far as gaming goes this is filet-mignon, one of the highest rated of all time. The ketchup made it better ;).

3D is dying, everyone go poke one of their eyes out

Actually they can and that's the problem. Most conversions are crappy conversions. Then people see them and instead of saying, that 3D movie sucks, they say 3D tech sucks

3D viewing almost makes watching movies work, when all you're really trying to do is relax for a bit.
Agree.

Watching movies should be relaxing and enjoyable.

For me, movies are an art form - and 3D doesn't enhance that art in any way.
It's almost the other way.

Then again, maybe I am watching in a 2D world. :p

TRON and Avatar in 3D = AWESOME
I'll agree that some movies are good, but they are few and far between.

Avatar is one for sure.

But to be frank, the 2D version is fine as well.

I agree on both accounts. If there is a market for it so be it. There are those who are going to like it and those who are not. But I hate it when my local Movie house only has the super expensive IMAX 3D or just plain ole 3D playing. With no regular showings. I vote with my money and not see it, but it sounds like there is a still a market for it as there are a lot of movies still coming out that are in 3D. Just not my cup of tea that is all.

I saw the newest Transformers in 3D and thought it was pretty cool. Some may view 3D TV as gimmicky which may be true however it does make certain movies more enjoyable to watch. The only issue I have with it is that I get headaches after watching a movie in 3D. Getting old I guess :(

3D - so long we lived without it, and now it is (was?) upon us, I feel like we've been heading down the same "upgrade road" that we are constantly persuaded into believing we need to follow:

"VHS? Pah, DVD is far better"

"DVD? Pah, you need to get Blu Ray!"

"What? Standard Blu Ray? You're behind - 3D is the future"

Or... we could all just stop being distracted by "New... Newer... Newest....... NEXT GEN!! HURRY UPP" and actually make something of our lives, without fussing and fighting over the utterly dull & circular subject of debate, of which format is 'best'.

Oh, and fwiw, my mind reads a book and creates scenery on the fly. My imagination far outspans the dimensions of time, space & three dimensions. Yep, a good old fashioned TEXT format movie means YOU are the format, and your mind is the limitless screen. Pixels? Never heard of these things... :p

Books, try one. Massively under-rated, by those with lazy minds.

PS: I love watching films, was just giving an example of tech obsession.

For my younger years, before I read any novels, radio did the same for me.

Close your eyes, listen and imagine.

What if the story is stupid (the words on that MR censored list really include words any six year year old knows)? A story and their characters are still important aspects for many people watching movies. All the effects and blimblim can't help elevate a turd to something strawberry-like.
I like action like the next kid, but even I have interest in the story and characters, and if those two important aspects are treated like necessary add-ons, then I quit watching.
My flatmate recently watched that TF3 movie, in 2D, and he wasn't really enjoying it. I then rented Bad Boys 2 out of interest (Michael Bay was the director there too) and I quit after twenty minutes and returned the movie, as there was no substance.
Just something to add: I recently also watched Crank 2, which is a stupid movie, but somehow it was loads better than BB2, maybe because it didn't take itself that serious or because the actors had a lot of fun doing the movie. In other words, I can sometimes enjoy movies with trite characters and plot, but it has to have some charm. The TF movies don't have any in my eyes.
Gong Fu was loads better in that regard.

3D is a fad, I've seen a couple of movies in 3D and while some do look nice, its not something I'd buy a new TV for.

I LOL at this new 4D stuff, apparently you can smell scents in the movie? whoopty doo, that'd be more annoying than anything. Yet another gimmick from hollywood.

Glad I'm not the only one who would be perfectly glad to see 3-D die a miserable, burning death.

The one who mentioned 4k is correct.

People are looking for genuinely immersive content, not a 3-D gimmick

great quote:

“Audiences are very smart,” said Greg Foster, the president of Imax Filmed Entertainment. “When they smell something aspiring to be more than it is, they catch on very quickly.”
