Huh, it kinda makes me wonder how much of this was fueled by Apple's desire to avoid comparisons between iOS devices and the Newton. In hindsight, it'd explain Apple's heavy anti-stylus marketing when the iPhone was first introduced. Then when the iPad came out, they just omitted features that were most memorable from the Newton.
I doubt the people involved now even knew that functionality existed on the Newton - that's the more likely answer :p

It's still unbelievable to me the new remote doesn't have the W1/Airtag functionality built in.

Remotes and mice. What is it about Apple where they just don't get things that people hold to interact with UIs? The trackpad is the only physical UI device Apple has clear superiority in - and that may be more to synaptics than them 🙃

This is the company that you attach a pencil sticking out the end of your iPad or turn your mouse upside down to stab it with a charger.... common sense in user hardware interaction doesn't exist at Apple

The remote itself should have been compatible with FindMy, assuming it isn't.

Also, will AirTags be a good solution for this since we now know the tracking ability can't be shared among family members? Seems like a remote-finding solution should respond to a request from anyone in the household.
Calls spouse: I can't find the remote, can you tell me where it is on your phone?
Spouse: It says it's somewhere in the house, does that help?

I guess I'm in the minority here, in that I've never lost my Apple TV remote. Is there really a pandemic level number of people losing their ATV remotes that want tracking devices on them, or built in?
I've had to look under and behind various cushions to mind mine a few times, it'd have been handy to just be able to make it ping, or get a guide on your phone. A remote was in Apple's video for Find My, so they must agree this is something that happens, which makes it odd they didn't include it.

What I'd like to see if somebody open up the remote and insert the AirTag internals into it somehow!

Apple recently released a redesigned Siri Remote with a physical clickpad, but if you have an original Siri Remote laying around that you still plan on using, you may be interested in getting an AirTag case for the remote.

Etsy user PrintSpiredDesigns has capitalized on the opportunity with a new 3D printed, made-to-order AirTag case for the original Siri Remote. The remote slides into the top side of the case, while an AirTag can be placed into an opening on the bottom, allowing the location of the remote to be tracked in the Find My app on Apple devices.

As a 3D printed case, the design of the remote is bound to look a little rough around the edges, but the Etsy user says the remote fits snugly and securely and that the AirTag satisfyingly clicks into place on the bottom. The case is printed with hard PLA plastic, with black, white, or glow-in-the-dark versions to choose from. There is a cutout for a Lightning cable to be connected for charging without removing the case.

Another thing to keep in mind is that, due to the orientation of the AirTag in the case, the loudness of the built-in speaker may be reduced.

The case is priced at $12.99 on Etsy, or you can buy the STL file for $1.99 and 3D print your own.

Awesome, wish we had this solution for years.

I lost it day one and have never found it :p Have to use my iPhone for the remote.

I'm certainly one of those folks who can't understand why they didn't build in FindMy functionality in the new remote - unbelievable.

I’ll tell you what I lose a lot - the Apple Pencil! Think they can fit another chip in there?

Do people still lose their remotes? 😆
Once I put a $5 silicon case on it, it doesn't slide into the cushions or anywhere, actually. Not sure what people do to lose their remotes so well that they need technology to find it?

Ignoring the cost of adding the chip and a speaker with the hysteria from the stalking fetishists over the AirTag can you imagine what they'd say if a item not obviously a tracker could be slipped in a person's belongings?

Or print one for free :)
to print this you only need about $ 0.10 of material, everything above that is profit he is making ;)

I don’t think it’s a good idea having the brains (and the speaker) sandwiched between aluminum and stainless steel. I think the AirTag has to be placed with the white part pointing outwards, even if it looks less shiny/pretty.

You know, a case that can more easily tell me which way I'm holding the bloody remote is a good idea on it's own, AirTag holder or not.

Don’t wait too much longer and ppl will be airtagging their brains because they can’t find them.

My guess is for privacy reasons. They don’t want people using them as a low cost means to find others. Every device supported by Find My is on the higher end and people with bad intentions are probably less likely to part with their expensive iPhones or iPads to track someone.

The remote doesn't already have a "find my remote" feature? Seems like a missed opportunity for Apple.
