I thinking of getting the white but am a bit worried about this problem. I live in Holland where the carrier is T-Mobile and their are no Apple Stores. If mine were to get cracks would I be able to have it replaced by Apple, or would I be in the hands of T-Mobile service only.

Thanks,

snverhallen

I can honestly say that I am extremely happy with my v1 phone. I was so looking forward to 3G, but was disappointed terribly with Apple's choice of plastic, so I immediately went on the hunt for an iPhone, and was lucky enough to score a brand new one for $150.

With equal candor, I had no problems paying $600 for an aluminum iPhone, and the additional $15 per month would not have been a problem either. I, for one, would not accept 2 3Gs for my aluminum:)

I will baby my v1 until Apple figures out a way to add 3G into an aluminum case.

My EDGE phone rocks!!!!!!!

WELL SAID!

Hoi SNVerhallen,

I have teh same problem (Amsterdam). I have the black 16Gb with a small crack between the earphone port and the metal rim. I'm waiting to see how the situation develops and whether Apple comes out with a statement or approach to handle this. In addition I will keep an eye on my iPhone and as soon as parts start breaking off, I will print out these pages on the forum and go to the T-Mobile store.

I would advise you to wait with your purchase. Maybe it is a bad batch and they can isolate it. I also recommended my girlfriend to wait.

I'm also a bit sceptical how T-Mobile will handle this, as the are in the middle and handled the introduction of the iPhone very bad.

Have a 1g iPhone? Reading this thread? Thinking about posting how lucky you are to not have the iPhone 3g? GTFO.

SOOOO happy i stuck with my aluminum back first generation iphone! I knew the plastic back would crack. Thank god i didnt get it, being a neat freak especially with gadgets- the slightest crack/scratch would bother the crap out of me! Im waiting for the next iphone, hoping it will have a front camera and totally different design and what not. good luck with those cracks guys..

hahah crack kills! lol sorry i just had to! :D

Seriously where were you and other like minded folks when I needed you??? I was the first to point out these very issues and boy did I get slammed! I got called troll so many times and some even asked that I be banned. And for what? Because Apple has clearly made a (sorry) BUDGET model to succeed the near perfection of the original and I decide to be critical. There were other alternatives to goin g with this type of plastic for the back. Even if they could not use aluminum (which I don't believe) they could of used a better type of plastic with a grain structure that is less brittle. I can see this model going down the iPod MINI road.

Allright man, We know it now. Why don't you open a new thread (that everyone can choose to ignore), write a two pager about how budget the iPhone is and leave the rest of us in peace. It's getting tedious, annoying and old. Stop polluting the discussion here.

@iRozzy: very unhelpful post. Expect no help from me if you ever need any. We are here to discuss and help eachother. Not to poke fun at people who have a problem and are looking for a solution or support.

So, I've got a quick question before I run into the store for my genius bar appointment this afternoon. I had to exchange my original iPhone 3G for dust under the screen, and was only ever given replacement units from behind the genius bar in the white boxes.

My current iPhone 3G, also has dust under the screen (all of the replacement phones we tried had the same problem; was told to come back at a later time once new shipments were in due to a bad batch) as well as cracks forming. Should I simply tell them what I was told by the genius who did the swap before and ask for a non-replacement device?

This is the first time in over 12 years that I've had a bad experience with an Apple product. Luckily, they have been very good about dealing with the situation so far from my experience.

Model and Week update on my replacement

Just an update. Just noticed the week # on my replacement White 3G. It's a MB499LL from WEEK 30! I don't think I've seen any week 30's in this thread. No cracks so far and I went over it with a jewelers magnifying mask last night and an ultra bright light. (Yeah, I'm like that about my gadgets, and yes I do know it's a sickness.)

Damn !

16 GB White iPhone 3G....with a CRACK in the damn casing. RATS !!! It's going back this weekend :mad::mad:

I actually ended up returning my first white phone because of what looked like 2 diagonal, faint blue streaks on the back of the phone.

At first, I thought that it could have been a faint ink stain of some sort but after some significant wiping it would not come off. Then after checking some posts and pictures, they looked consistent to possible cracks or bends in the casing itself. Nevertheless, I took it back and got it exchanged for a brand new in-box (in the actual market box, not the refurb/factory box) white phone.

My guess for more reports in regards to the white phone is simply due to the color (obviously). Cracks and such will be much more noticeable in the white phone as opposed to the black one.

I'm going to sit back and bask in the schadenfreude, enjoying the durability of my aluminum-backed 1st-gen iPhone.

Plastic cracks -- especially thin plastic with compound curves. Reinforcement would have affected signal strength and/or overall dimensions.

I noticed this same problem on my white 16gb the other day. I thought it was a scratch. But was confused because I have kept it in a case and cared for it like a baby!!! Then I read this thread and others and shocked to see that this is a wide spread problem! I will post pictures up in the morning.

OK. We get if folks. You love your old iPhone with the aluminum back. This thread is for people who are having issues with cracks on their 3G iPhone.

You are adding absolutely nothing to this thread by telling us you love your old iPhone.

How about if you don't have a 3G iPhone, don't post in here. Your adding nothing to the discussion.

Also...

Mine is cracked near the headphone jack.
Week 27 model, purchased on July 11th.

Can anyone who has also gone through the exchange process enlighten me and push me a in the right direction in regards to my question?

It's sometimes difficult to differentiate between stress fractures and fractures that result from normal wear and tear. Granted that stress fractures or wear fractures that occur in the first week might seem abnormal, it would not be abnormal, in my opinion, for fractures to occur after that time.

In my own experience using these types of devices there are any number of things which might damage the casing. Setting the device down too quickly or in a forceful way on tables, counters, etc., oils from the hand, prolonged exposure to sunlight, excessive vibrations...

The point is that this device has been manufactured in a standard way, but the types and degree of usage by each individual purchaser is infinite. Even the most well thought out stress tests are no substitute for thousands if not millions of users and their varied experiences.

As with any mass produced product there will always be those who experience satisfactory usage and those who experience subprime usage. This is just a fact of life

Yeah? Well point me to similar thread as this to any other phone in the world!

Loving my first-gen life. :)

Thank you for contributing to this thread. I am sure your cutting insight will help all of the people who are having problems. Most MAC people are great, but this is a disgrace! The fact that people that chose not to upgrade are rubbing it in the faces of those with problems is unacceptable! You shouldn't even be posting. You have nothing of value to add to this. Go back to your MAC roots and show a little support.

For the record.....We're glad that you are all happy with your firs gens.
