That's how I cracked my iPod touch screen. Don't do that again! Just be glad the screen didn't shatter from any pressure.

I fell through the ceiling of an old house filming once with my old iPhone, fell out of my pocket half way down and I landed on it, and oddly enough, perfect condition...

Did I mention my Dock connecter?

I bought a white 3G yesterday- MB499LL/A, week 29. After sitting on my desk for a few hours the first crack appeared out of nowhere (ah, some nice light leakage, too).

Went to the genius bar today and exchanged it for a black 16GB model- this is MB048LL/A, week 30. No cracks or light leakage out of the box. I'll check again in a day or two (it's in Contour case now).

Did anybody narrow it down to a certain build+week yet?

The black ones DO get cracks...

Mine got them... that's when I started reading this thread and fell asleep, then waking up to that "Blazing 3G Speed":D

That's pretty lucky your iphone didn't break completely! I'm sure apple will exchange it if you show them your shaved/burned leg, it'll definitely give you some sympathy points... :D

I guess, but another thing, the nearest Apple Store is about 150+ miles from here... :(

That's bad news about the cracks! Had my white 3g (week 27) for 3 weeks now with no case, kept it in my shirt pocket at work anywhere else I just use a sunglass pouch which, if you think about it is very effective. Inevitably there are surface scratches on the chrome bezel that not even any of the cases could prevent but as far as cracks go I haven't seen any. A little tip though, try and keep the phone docked when possible in a vertical position, this will prevent the back/front/sides/earholes from any bigger pieces of dirt/dust etc getting in the gaps. The only thing I have noticed, that has peeved me off a little is a couple of tiny surface scratches on the GUI which was self inflicted and a couple dirt spots that look like they can be wiped off but they're stuck firmly.

Can just see myself a year from now after I have eventually bought the 3G iPhone taking it in for replacement of the next model with the entire back held together with cellotape, falling apart in blocks of plastic, being able to see through to the microchips and suchwhat inside!!

This thread isnt inspiring confindence in me to get one!!

Model: MB499LL
Week: 28
Color: White

No cracks as of yet. No protective case. I just carry it in a pocket by itself.
How do I tell the week my iPhone was made?
Model:MB705LL
I purchased mine the day of the launch, but have not noticed any sort of cracks in the case.

I love the 1st gen Iphone owners coming in here and making themselves feel better about their phone. Hey guys, guess what. Apple will resolve the issue, those who have cracked phones will get new ones, and you will still be left with your phased out pokey phone. Hey, but at least it's aluminum.

:apple:

Sorry, had to.

I mean really, people need to relax. Yeah it sucks that some people have this problem but it wouldn't be the first time a new product has issues. 6 months from now this will be old news and the Iphone 3g will still be a monster of a success. So relax, you are in good hands IMO.

gen1!!

i have my gen1 launch phone and its is running like a CHAMP!
alot of people think i have the 3g phone because i have the white incase dockable plastic shell!!
and i love it!
