iphones

I think seriously if you are complaining the housing is cracking I serious think you people don't take care of your iPhones you need to put in a case and don't be so hard on it. iPhones are computer handhelds and there gentle devices. Good luck.

Do you really think every single person in this thread is treating their phone poorly? If the phone (and it is primarily a phone, not a computer) needs a case to used, then it should have come with a case.

Do not troll.

I treat mine extremely carefully, I rarely even put it in a tight pocket. I usually put it in a case when I leave the house. Never been dropped, even on soft surfaces. Never been sat on, and it's still developing cracks.
Maybe you drop your phone and mistreat your devices, but not all of us. Speak for yourself.

Hey. Im new to this forum but ive read every single post on this thread. I got my Black 16G iphone on August 9th. The seccond day after I got the Iphone, I saw cracks. Im not sure if they developed or were already like that right out of the box because I had not payed very good attention to it. Anyways there are a lot of cracks between the volume rocker and the bezel, and some around the headphone jack. I will probably wait a bit before returning my iphone.

It is a week 31 factory 83.

Just above the silent switch. After about a week the dirt has made it more apparent. Have not taken it back yet.

I wonder if it is just a stress crack from being carried in my jeans pocket??

Mine has a crack in the exact same spot, I noticed two days after I bought the phone and I had not dropped it. I didn't even think about bringing it back so I have just lived with it, two days later I bought a case for it just so nothing we happens but after reading this thread I took the case off and looked for more cracks and found a tiny one by the standby/power button, a tiny one by the speaker, and another tiny one above the bottom corner on the left side and I have not dropped my phone. I thought that I had done something to my phone after I saw the first crack but now that I see others with the same problem, I wonder if it is a manufacturing issue...

I called Apple's Italian tech support today to enquire about having a small crack near my iPhone's volume control "repaired". The operator told me Apple will charge for the repair insofar they consider it "user-caused" damage outside the scope of warranty cover. I vented an industrial quantity of anger in his general direction.

Many people (including myself) have had no trouble with getting Apple to exchange. I would've asked for the phonecall to be raised to higher level or tried again with someone else.

I recommend those of you who only recently purchased the iPhone and noticed cracks to return them to the Apple store ASAP. I was told that they would exchange the phone immediately, no questions asked within 14 days of purchase. However, for those of use that lined up 5+ hours on launch day to get them, and only NOW experience cracking we are SOL.

I keep seeing people comment that Apple is replacing their iPhone, but I've been to two stores and was told both times that they won't exchange due to the fact that it's cosmetic and doesn't affect functionality. Granted, it's a small crack from the bezel to the headphone, but I didn't waste my time and money to get a shoddy product.

go in a dark room, get a flashlight and press it right up onto the back of your iphone. black or white iphone, this is the best way to view the cracks

Did you go to an Apple store or ATT?

How can they not replace the phone, its a mfg defect?

That's exactly the same thing I thought. I went to an Apple store in NYC and MA. Both "geniuses" gave me the same excuse. I told them to search for "cracks" in their system. The "genius" didn't even bother doing that and said you'll have to wait until Apple issues something official. I walked out ready to destroy every iPhone i saw on my way out.

Try a different store. The managers have leeway. Apple is not likely to do anything official anytime soon, if ever.

I purchased my Black 16GB iPhone 3G at an AT&T store at the launch. After a few days I noticed a small crack had formed starting from the headphone jack [never been dropped, etc]. I decided it wasn't a big deal to and chose not to worry about it. About a week ago, I realized the crack had gotten worse and reconsidered returning it. I scheduled a genius bar appointment at the 5th Ave. store. The genius admitted that some of the phones were developing cracks near the camera, dock connector, etc. and ordered me a replacement phone on the spot.

Two days later, the store called and said to bring my paperwork and the phone to the genius bar [in this case they didn't need the other cables, original box, etc]. They switched my cracked phone with a replacement - a "white box" version - resale I assume [I have tremendous confidence in Apple refurbs]. Defects ARE covered under the warranty - so launch day customers are definitely NOT left in the dark. The replacement Black 16GB iPhone 3G works and looks great - no cracks yet. I am very satisfied with how Apple responded to my issue. It's unfortunate that people are having problems with the phones but Apple is clearly responding.

It's only fair to mention though, the guy next to me at the genius bar was swapping his phone out as well, and the replacement they pulled out of the white box had a large dent in the bezel. The Apple geniuses were shocked and had no problem giving him another one but just to be safe - make sure to look over the "white box" phones as well. Again, this shouldn't discourage anyone from using Apple Refurbs [since they carry the same warranty, etc.] - just be aware.

whats the difference between refurb iphones and new iphones? is a new iphone better than a refurb? is there a difference in quality?

Are they surface cracks, maybe in the sealant part of the shell, does anyone know if the crack worsens in time, i know the phone hasn't been out that long, but does that crack increase.

mine that has that same crack (also right out of the box) is all the way thru the plastic. before reading thru all the various posts here, I assumed it was cracked during assembly since that part of the plastic is so thin.

for apple refurb items overall, I have been told that every refurb item goes thru QC, while 'new' items are only spot checked, so if that is indeed the case, a refurb should have more of a chance of being perfect than a 'new'.

I had mine replaced recently due to a crack under the camera area, the one they gave me wasn't a new one and I don't know if it was refurbished but it does have a flushness issue in the bottom right corner between the silver bezel and the plastic case, and also shows like pry marks on the silver bezel. I will go tomorrow for a replacement again.
