ok thanks :)

ok - I might have to take that comment about refurbs back  My sister just received the refurb itouch she ordered from apple, and it only has the top 1/4 of the screen with all colors. the rest of the screen is bright white with very pale essence of icons.

A week ago I visited the Apple Store in Regent Street / London. Most (not all) of the white iPhones had visible hairline cracks. Didn't have the time to check the black ones also. There were at least 30/40 iPhones to test.

Here are some pics I took:

I've examined the exact same situation at the Apple Store Sydney. The pics you post look identical to the white iPhones I've seen here. I really want a white but dammit, I don't want no cracker!

All white iphones in the sydney store have, at the very least, the cracks coming off the dock connector as seen in your pics.

pun intended? I lol'd

I see a lot of people are worried that all white iPhones are affected. I have a white iPhone since launch, that is unaffected. I don't have any cracks. I would never avoid a color because there is a chance of hairline cracks. You can always exchange it under warrantee.

Week 32 16g black no cracks, or light leak issues. So far has been a great upgrade from my 2g iPhone.

I recently was in my local apple store looking for a case and mentioned to the guy helping me I wanted something to cover all corners to avoid possible cracks (as I already have one very small crack) and he looked at me in shock - so asked if he heard of the issues with the white (mostly) backs getting the hairline cracks not related to mis-use and he hadn't - then discredited any threads as this or the one on apples support forum as non apple supporters and all hype. I was a little surprised at his reaction (and not having heard of the cracks - since he was a 3g iphone owner himself).

I'm not really sure if you can compare your phone with a demo phone as far as what's normal.

If you want to compare apples to apples (durrhurr) then you should shove your phone in and out of a dock 300 times a day and let tons of middle school and high school kids play with it. Each time I am at the apple store for any long period of time I see people manhandling iPods and iPhones like they're made out of titanium or something and don't have harddrives inside.

If those phones only have cracking around the dock connector after all that then I'm fairly confident I won't have any cracks in my white 16gb for quite some time.

Apple: "We're not aware of this problem, you're the first person to report it."

This is Apple's typical response to all manufacturing defects in their products.

Now that you mentioned it, I have the same experience with Apple as well.

Every time I asked them about anything (especially "issues" regarding their products), they all gave me this same answer:

"I've never heard of it. You're the first one to tell me."

Yeah, right......

Well they all had the cracking around the dock connector which was some pretty serious looking cracking, with many lines radiating from the connector.

However most also had cracks in other places as well, such as the volume, headphone jack, and even some random big cracks in the corners. It's definitely a concern, to me anyways, and it's prohibiting me from getting an iPhone 3G so far (at least a white one anyway).

they don't have hard drives (sorry I know this is besides the point)

What was the best explanation given by Apple for the cracks?

I emailed Steve Jobs about this issue and this is the response I got:

From: sjobs@apple.com
Subject: Re: Cracks in iPhone 3G

To:

The cases are not cracking.

Mr Jobs,
I am a loyal Apple customer and a great fan of it's products. I recently upgraded my 1st Gen iPhone to the 3G. I am quite concerned with the issues that the cases are apparently having with cracking. Does Apple have an official stance regarding this? I was one of the loyal that camped out to get this fantastic product, but I am extremely concerned with this issue. Any help you could give regarding this, I would greatly appreciate. Thank you again for the continued great work!
Very respectfully,

You tell me what Apple thinks!

I returned my white iPhone yesterday and the phone I recorved developed a bubble today! I don't know if I should even go back there. If I call AppleCare what would they tell me. I don't want the genius' thinking I'm a nuisance.

Gosh I wish people would leave him alone right now.

Many of those marks above look like scratches to me. ?

well I emailed steve jobs because the refurb i recieved yesterday got a bubble and he emailed me back. I'll post the screenshot once I get home. The forum won't let me upload it right now from my iphone. Basically he said it wasn't cracked just the overcoat. I'll post it later. Anyone with an email I can fed it to you.

It's great that he replied to you, but I don't like his response. I don't care whether the cracks are in the overcoat or in the panel itself. They should not be there, period.

Exactly...I really think some people dropped their phones and just want to request for new ones.

come on man. Read the whole thread. There are lots and losts of people here with cracks on a freshly unpacked iPhone. I have many cracks around the dock connector and the headphone socket and I haven't dropped or mishandled my iPhone. I even keep it in a quite thick felt sleeve (hard graft, I can recommend it).

I really doubt those responses are actually coming from Jobs himself. Like the messages sent to that email address noted in this thread, I am sure random complaints, kudos, etc messages come in all day and night from people thinking they can get directly in touch with the guy in charge.
I've worked for companies a fraction the size of apple, and the CEO was not directly involved in viewing/responding to his email but all would be filtered thru his admin staff.

With that said, I think it is worthwhile to attempt to bring this to the attention of someone above the genius bar guys or applecare phone answeres, but don't think an email to what would appear to be Steve Jobs personal account is the best method.

in regard to the comments about the apple store demo phones being not a good example of wear, because they are handled roughly by kids, I don't really agree with that. Keep in mind, even if those demo phones are from day 1, they still would only be 5 weeks old! Even being handled roughly (as roughly as something on a 4" tether can be), and plugged in/out of the dock all day long, what does that type of wear equate to for a typical iphone? IMO, a 5 week old phone, that's roughest wear is being plugged in/out of it's own dock, sat on the table, touched, etc should still be looking pretty new. I would expect it to look like there is dirt and scuffs but not the cracks.

What a mess! But you know, at this point I'd even live with the cracks if they could get 3G to work properly.
