I'm also amazed that the cracking issue isn't mentioned on any of the Apple podcasts that I listen to. I keep waiting for one of the hosts to mention it, but they haven't so far.
it was mentioned by Adam Christianson either on the MacCast. That was actually what made me pay attention to it, and made me realize the tiny crack mine came with (at the headphone jack) was more than just a fluke flaw.
I think this was the episode I was thinking of.

Sounds like a good way to crack your iPhone.

Seriously, if you have to go into a dark room, get a bright flashlight, get your magnifying glass and squint to see a barley visible line on you iPhone, then is it really an issue?
Or is the real problem the compulsive behavior that makes one do this odd task?

it is an issue, more so for the future, possibly. for one, it shouldn't be happening. checking out the cracks using this method helps give people real in-hand piece of mind on the prevalence of these cracks, especially since they are *initially* hard to view on black phones especially. further, you don't have to use a magnifying glass and squint to see a "barley" invisible line, it's quite apparent with this light method, particularly for the larger cracks.

i mention *initially* and tie it into the fact that it is an issue for the future in that these cracks could get larger, and impair function after starting off so superficially.

Just wondering if anyone else that has purchased an iPhone fairly recently has noticed any cracking?

Also, everyone still having luck getting a new Phone at apple?

I just noticed 1 small little hairline crack near the vibrate switch and two little hairlines near the volume switch.

Really annoying...I want to go trade it in but I feel I will end up with something worse or just with a phone that will crack again.

New 8GB Black - No cracks...1 week old

I've got 8GB - Black iPhone (in leather case) - 1 week old today - NO CRACKS YET!...will keep an eye on it and report here frequently...should anything unusual happen...cracking etc.

What they need to do is redesign these to have the metal ring extend out to the dock connector + headphone jack, like on the iPod touch. That'd solve the 2 big cracks (although I would prefer it they kept an aluminum back, myself).

I went to the grand opening at the new Apple Store in Las Vegas 2 days ago. I inspected all the iPhones on display (both black and white), no cracks!

Compare that to another local Apple store I went to 5 days ago where most of the white iPhones on display had cracks. Presumably these were built further back in time than those at the new store I visited.

Coincidence? You decide.

yes, it shows that most of the cracks are formed over time. imo it is caused by heat stretching and cooling the plastic.

Does not sound like a coincidence. It sounds like since it was a "new" store they had "new" phones. These phones at other Apple stores are older phones showing cracks that develop over time.

Big question, no doubt.????

I think it goes to show that this is a design flaw and not a quality control issue (like some have suggested).

Nice suggestion, but if you would have at least read SOME of the posts in this thread you would have known that these cracks appear regardless the use of cases. These cracks appear due to faults in the construction.

If your wife's iPhone doesn't have cracks than consider her lucky. The case does nothing.

That is not the case I'm afraid, as a lot of users have reported cracks in their brand new iPhones - straight out of the box...
My iPhone replacement (week 27) is flawless so far. Interestingly Apple have replaced my original iPhone (after 3 weeks of usage) with the same week production one (week 27) and yet this one (after 4 weeks so far) seems to be OK... Go and figure.

Maybe, but my black 3G has been sitting in a case in a really hot car all summer. In fact it got so hot yesterday that I got a message when I got back to the car saying "temperature Warning!" "iphone has overheated and needs to cool down". I took it into an air conditioned space and quickly cooled it under a fan and with the case off. No cracks appeared yet. Also as it has been reported here many new phones right out of boxes with no heat cool cycle or cases have cracks on day one.

By the way, if everyone with cracks sits and waits for Apple to fix this prior to replacing their unit, Apple won't have enough complaints to do much about it.

Heating and cooling also happens inside the box. There have been no reports of Apple shipping iPhones in temperature controlled boxes. ;)

How do you know that?

Not sure what to do...

I noticed my replacement 16Gb white is starting to develop hairline cracks between the chrome bezel and volume rocker switch...

This is my 3rd phone - 1st one I had to replace due to a number porting issue, 2nd had cracks around the dock and now this one. I've made an appointment at the Genius Bar for Monday but I'm honestly a little hesitant to go because the phone is otherwise perfect and I'm probably the only one who will ever notice it.

If I do go, I'm seriously considering just telling them to give me a black one since this seems to be so much more prevalent / noticeable on the white models.

Man, you guys should consider yourselves lucky. Me on the other hand that paid over $1000.00 for an unlocked iPhone that now has a ****ing crack about 3/8 of an inch down by the dock connector that showed up after being handled like a newborn baby. NOW I gotta send the damn thing back to Australia to get it replaced. Damn you APPLE!!!!

So the consumer item got a little crack. It is not the end of the world.

People elsewhere are dying of hunger, war, violence, oppression, and you are sitting here worrying about little cracks on your iPhone?

Do you know how absurd this is?
