Getting this wonderful crack by the dock connector...

Not sure if I am going to take it back to the Apple store or not. The rest of the phone is perfect. On the other hand, I don't want the crack to start spreading up the back of the phone.

know how to get the cracks to go away? get a case. out of sight, out of mind is what i say lol

Amen. It is just an unfortunate reality of this iPhone's generation. A good case and time will help to forget about it. I personally love my CapsuleNeo, it's so streamlined that I don't even consider it a case. It's like an extension of the housing, and it looks good, too! I don't have to look at any underlying problems and it protects from any new big ones. As long as the phone works, enjoy it! :D

Get it fixed, it will get bigger, as it's a split in the plastic. Mine started small, and has grown to this.

I'm only waiting to exchange mine for an apple store to open up in my town (so I don't have to wait for shipping). It opened last Friday so I'm going in soon to exchange it.
Sorry for the bad pics, iSight isn't great at close ups...

Hi All,

Advice please!

I got a new case last week and in putting on my sheild on the screen I noticed on the bottom left hand side of my iphone the glass on the front has cracked slightly, near the home button. I've never dropped my phone and it has always been kept in a case.

Unfortunatly my nearest apple store is about an hours drive away and I got it from CPW. Should I go to an apple store? Or should I leave it? Will it get any bigger?

I got my Iphone on launch day and appart from the keyboard lag etc which was fixed with 2.1 I've had no problems at all!

I'm in two minds....................

Thanks

Take it back to CPW, that is where you bought it from, and is presumably local.
If they wont replace it/deal with the warranty, apple do a postal repair service - you don't have to go in-store, they are pretty quick too. Sometimes they will send you a replacement and you send the defective item back by return.

Funny how all the cracks on my 3G look just like the cracks on my crackbook...

Add me to the list. I just noticed a crack near my bezel. This sucks. This is class-action lawsuit stuff going on here. How can they sell us a product that cracks even when taking extra careful care of it? I baby my iPhone. I never let anyone touch it, I'm always careful where I place it and I've never dropped it. UGH. I'm returning this piece of junk.

wow, you seemed so happy with your 3G a few days ago!

these cracks are unfortunate, and they seem to be par for the course given the type of plastic used. it seems that cracks are the trade-off for such brittle, hard plastic.

i have a tiny one up by the headphone jack and it definitely bugs me. it's an otherwise perfect so it's not worth it to me to try and get a replacement. i'm just hoping it doesn't get worse!

i do know, though, that despite the fact that my crack is in one of the "hot spots" of seemingly spontaneous cracking, i didn't notice it until my 3G suffered a very small drop. i'm talking from like 4 inches above the ground. and it had suffered worse without cracking.

i think that these cracks cannot happen without some external force, i just think that due to the extreme stress and brittleness of the plastic, there's no telling what kind of stressor can cause them. you might be able to drop your iPhone 6 feet to the ground without incident, but the tiniest bump in just the right spot may cause a crack to form.

So did you ever take it in to get fixed? Your cracks look almost identical to mine.

I definitely haven't dropped mine and have been babying it from the start. I even I something to "cushion" it when I have to put it on a table or something and it still cracked. :( Sucks big time. :(

I probably will wait for the crack to get bigger before exchanging it though since I am gonig to get a refurb either way now.... :(

i would love to get it replaced... i didnt think apple would really replace them  well i was going to the apple store today so i think i might take my jacked up charger my cracked usb cord and my cracked iphone :p

Funny...

Seems Apple can't get anything right when it comes to plastic housing for it's goodies. Back in the days they had visible seems in a perfectly formed PowerMac G4 Cube, that appeared like cracks, then it's the MacBook's turn... and now iPhone 3G? What's going on?

Or... are those cracked caused cause some people push and use their iPhone while docked? I'm curious.

I had a crack by the silent button, and another one starting near the sleep button. I took it to the Apple Store last night, and they gave me a white box phone with no problem. The new one looks fine, no light leaks and nothing crooked. Hopefully this one doesn't crack as well.

Hmm... maybe refurbished iPhones have better quality since they had to be fixed and put back together by Apple people.

What a bunch of cry babies. All you want to do is try and make a buck. Rather than wait for apple to fix the problem all you want to do is sue. It's so sad:(

interesting. My friend has a white one with cracks in the middle of the phone. I got a nice incase and invisible shield for the glass so if anything, i won't notice a crack lol.

Or you could exchange it, They're supposed to be using a better plastic now.

Not just yet, My laptop needs doing (top case palm rest cracks) I'l exchange the phone when I get the laptop back

Where is this alleged information coming from? I was waiting for Apple to revamp the plastic on the 3G's before I exhanged mine. So far, I only have one small hairline crack near the vibrate switch.

Thanks.

Yeah, I don't remember hearing anything official about Apple using a better plastic now. I think they should use that plastic that they make sporks out of... those things will bend like crazy and it's almost impossible to actually snap it. Of course you wouldn't want your plastic to be that weak... they should just use a less brittle plastic.

Ha...

They should have used plastic like on the back of the iMac's like the rumored MB's might be.

just turned my white 3g in at the t-mobile store.. it has cracks left of the dock-connector.. they'll send it to apple and i'll might have it back this week.. hopefully they'll replace it.. :)
