Apple replaced my iPhone with a brand new one box and all accesories. I will report back once the cracks start to develop again. Like I said this is my last iPhone 3G. I only hope the new iPhone is built to Apple's old standards!

You got a new box? Sync cable, charging puck, etc.?

That's odd. Did you have to bring in all your old accessories?

New everything. The service was great and they FedEx's everything to me, but again I fully expect to have the same problems on this phone.

I am counting the days until the new iPhone is released!

Interesting .. what exactly did you do? Call in to Apple? Did you have to mail back your original stuff?

Inquiring minds want to know!

I called Apple and it was their idea because I had a couple of phones replaced.
I love their service, but I just want a phone that doesnt crack or have dead pixels. Oh well...

That's really weird that they gave him a sealed new phone because I thought that they were supposed to give you a refrub when you bring it in for problems.

I see.

Well, I'll be honest - I'm pretty sick of having to go to the Apple store, get a refurb, and find that it's cracking again a few weeks later.

I never thought about calling since I live so close, but if you got a new phone and not a refurb, I may just do that.

Once you get the new phone - wanna post again and let us know what week it was manufactured and all that?

It was manufactured in week 12 of 2009. I did not request a new phone. They offered so I have no idea if calling them will work or not. I could care less if its a refurb or a new phone. I can already tell the light leakage (which I dont care about) on the new phone is worse than my last refurb. I expect cracks in another couple of weeks as well.

I'm just surprised you got a fully new phone - how many exchanges are we talking about?

There are people on this board who have exchanged like 7 times and have never been offered a new, boxed iPhone.

I think it was 6 phones in total but im done now :) Im waiting for the new iPhone or even the Palm Pre if it turns out as good as it looks.

So i finally got to a camera to upload a photo, however i'm absolutely terrible at taking photos, but as you can see from the photo, all around above the headphone jack there is an area thats not the same colour. If i could get a proper photo in that area there are several small fissures in the plastic, but from what i can feel, the plastic is smooth, and it looks like the cracks are under the plastic, would this warrant a replacement if i took it to a genius, you can see it better in person.

my concern is that it can only be seen under a bright light really, but ill book an appointment at the genius bar neways

Has anyone noticed that the camera in their replacement phone is of a poorer quality than previous phone? Screen def doesn't seem quite as sharp either.

I exchanged an August-bought white iphone - mute and volume switch cracks - at Southampton last week.

I'm just wondering if they're starting to skimp on the components? Or perhaps my unit - sensory perception - is dicky.

You are correct about the screen issues. I'm on my 6th iPhone replacement and have noticed on the last 3 there have been some major dithering issues when going from dark to light gradients. This is best seen on the wallpaper with the Earth where on a good screen the edge of the planet looks clean where on a bad screen there is an obvious gray border around it. When I was in the Apple Store to swap my phone out for this I checked some of their displays and some were good and some were bad. They told me it was within spec but swapped it out anyway. My replacement has the same issue and I am sick of going to the Apple Store so I'll probably just deal with it since it seems to be a pretty common issue. One replacement I had was even worse though, and besides the gray border around the Earth you could see a smattering of gray pixels all around it (NOT dead/stuck pixels, if you looked at the same wallpaper in the Settings app they weren't there).

I'd love to get inside one of Apple's manufacturing plants and see just WTF they do in there. These inconsistencies between iPhones blow me away. Cracking, dust, warped plastic housing (I @#$% you not, my first replacement phone had this), screen dithering, uneven power buttons, silent switches that are either too loose or not loose enough, mis-fitted rubber seals resulting in light leak, bubbles in the plastic on the back, etc. Come on Apple, get with the @#$%ing program.

this is just another fast cash way for apple by using cheap casings and not hiring enough people to audit quality control .
i wonder what would happen if 10,000 iphone 3g owners comes to court with cracked casings ,would the judge force apple to produce better shells for our iphone 3gs? but then again it's not a safety issue .i gotta say spending a good amount of money on a product that cracks out of thin air is just not right:(

I am on my 3rd technically 4th white iphone 3G.....I have never had a problem exchanging them yet luckily but the last time I went there I was given the best service. I was gonna exchanged my 2nd one due to cracks which showed up before hairlines even showed up unlike my first one. When I received my 3rd one the genius told me to check if it was ok and up to par but as he was finishing up my paperwork I noticed a bunch of hairlines(the kinds that develop into cracks) by the ringer switch. I told him what i saw and he confirmed they were there and even took the time to open a bunch of boxes until he found a perfect one for me. So far this new one is perfect with no hairlines so hopefully this will be my last.

I live in San Diego and my Black 3G got a major crack at the sync cable connector. I made an appointment for the Genius Bar and went today. I told the tech that I heard a lot about cracking cases and he said that some had but he didn't seem too willing to agree. He started by asking me questions about how I used my phone. What case I use. Did I ever drop it. He did a check on the phone with his laptop to verifty the software was OK. I assume he was checking to see if it was Jailbroken. He then looked into the sync connector with a small scope. After all his checking and questions he finally said that he was going to replace the phone because there is a valid case problem with cracking. I guess I answered all the questions right. The phone he gave me was from a box with nothing but a phone in it. I assumed it was a refurb but I wasn't sure. When I got home and synched the phone it asked me to register my phone. When I did, the info for someone else came up with another phone number, address etc. It obviously was a refurb. The phone seems perfect so for now I'm satisfied.

I'd love to take mine to a genius bar to be replaced, but considering I live about 5 hours away from the nearest one, I don't think I can.

Could AT&T do this for me? What about calling up Apple themselves?

I'd call Apple, not ATT.

Not sure how closely everyone has been following this thread, but I had a bunch of posts a few pages back:

I just noticed a crack near my dock connector - GREAT

It's just more annoying than anything as I really don't feel like going to another Apple Store again.

Of course. Same thing happened to me the other day...this is my third iPhone 3G replacement. You'll notice that it will "grow." These aren't just hairline cracks, they're deep. See pic below...near the SIM tray.

Don't feel bad I'm on my 6th replacement for cracks and this one is cracking like no other, by the headphone jack, by the ringer switch, by the dock, and by the volume buttons.. It's really sad we have to keep getting replacements for something like this, I didn't have one single replacement with my iPhone 2G and it's still running and looking perfectly. I really really hope the next iPhone is aluminum again.

I also hate how every time these "Geniuses" transfer my screen protector they manage to screw it up.. on my next replacement I'm gonna speak with a manager about having some thrown in because I'm tired of buying new screen protectors every time for something that Apple is at fault for (3 packs so far = $45!)

Wow..you guys have made me introduce a magnifying glass to my phone but thus far i can happily report no cracks only tiny scratches. Its a refurb replacement (dead pixel/freezing/buzzing earpiece) and its been chugging along just fine

First gen is still the coolest. The iPhone 3G has a cooler shape but doesn't feel solid. It seems like Apple's has problems with using plastics from the Macbooks to iPhones, to the iPod nanos (1G).
