Hi guys, first post here, I just got my white iphone right after the holidays, and I totally baby it, its always in its pouch, the back of the phone is immaculate! whens the last time you saw a used iphone with a 100% PERFECT apple logo without the faintest scratch?

Anyways, its really been bothering me that there is a crack on in the case at the mute botton, all the way thru that i can catch my nail on,

The phone also has a bad light leak on the left side becuase there is a gap becuase the glass on the left side isnt flush with the chrome bezel.

the Glass is uneven and the whole left side of the phone dosent feel smooth,
its got a sharp edge feel, feels like a cheap knockoff compared to a co-workers 2g phone.

My Nearest apple store is about 50 miles away, is there anyway Apple will send a replacement phone or will i NEED to go to an applestore?

It seems like the area around the mute button is a very common area where these have been cracking,

the crack and the uneven glass has really been angering me, especially for a $300 phone..

what are the chances they will swap my phone for a replacement without these issues?

Thanks!

I've had 4 iPhone 3Gs

1: Light leak
2: Light leak and cracking
3: Uneven plastic and bezel creating sharp edge
4: Perfect

so im about 2 phones away from perfect it seems like according to alot of reports, LOL!,

this is actually my 2nd already,my first 8gb phone decided to not be able to TXT anymore. But i dont think this will count..

the thing that pisses me off is that a co-worker has a beat up 2g, and you run your fingers acrossed the chrome bezel over the screen seam and its soo silky smooth, and every 3G feels like CRAP.

I got mine in July and have been exchanging it every month or so, the whole process is just not immediate, even though it's always been about manufacturing defects, light leaks on all of them, this last one is probably the best but not perfect, bad buttons or switches on a few of them, cracks on 3 of them, bad pixels or dust on most of them as well.. I think I'm using my 8th one, they offered not to exchange it anymore and give me a full refund, I said "let's try one more time", hoping it doesn't crack since I can deal with the light leak.
Does anyone have a link to the iPhone with a piece of plastic fallen off, near the silent switch?

My month old iPhone White has developed the classic headphone jack crack. It is a Walmart iPhone so you would think it is one of the newer batches(haven't figured out the week build). I don't think they have improved anything about the backing like some have surmised. I will probably have it replaced at some point but am not in a super rush until a few more pop up or this one gets worse.

How do you know it's a newer batch, then?

If anything, I'd assume Wal-Mart got old stuff (or certainly at least '08 stuff).

Looking at the serial number it's build week 50. Don't really know what that tells you.

Mine is a week 36 and it's refurbished. I've had this one since October and I don't have a single crack. My previous iPhone 3G cracked though.

It guess it tells us your phone was made in the 3rd last week of 2008.

But ya ... it may not be an age thing (since people have perfect phones from months ago). But all I know is that my latest phone was made in 2009 and feels way different than my previous ones. My previous ones were "not perfect" (to put it nicely), so YMMV.

If more start to develop I will definetly replace it. The crack is still tiny and I haven't found anymore. It's so small now I think the geniuses would laugh at me

I've had my iphone since July 11th with no problems until last weekend. I didn't drop my phone anywhere Saturday night. I placed it on the counter and charged it with the leather sleeve around it. The phone was in the same position when i checked it the next morning. I know it wasn't there because i would have felt it as i txted Saturday night. As I txt, my right pinky finger helps balance the phone and that was the first thing I noticed when i picked it up Sunday morning.
I'm not sure I could get it replaced but I have no idea how a fracture was created without a big drop or incident.

I'll probably get the next iphone this Summer but I was wondering if this is what people are seeing on their cracked phones.

No drops or anything

same story, same crack for me

I did the mail in option. The new phone was delivered the next day. No problems at all!

Please explain your situation.. You had an unexplained crack in your phone & they just sent you another one the next day?
Must of been brand new.
I'd complain if mine was 1-4months old.. Then again, my phone is just over 8months. < I'm trying to figure out what is reasonable wear & tear, but my phone was not dropped.

Am I being over sensitive for a mystery crack to develop on an iphone i've owned for 8months? I planned to have it for 2 yrs.. Until I heard about the 3rd gen. coming out.

Just got off the phone with apple support, the rep said its been a known issue, "out of the millions of iphones sold, only a very small percentage have had this problem."

I got pitched to purchase apple care for $69.00,

Then offered a replacement phone for $29.00 shipping.

Or replacement at an apple store, Will make an appointment at the closest apple store, (50 miles away.) on Saturday to get my new replacement.

Problems are,

Glass is not flush with chrome bezel, the edge of the glass feels sharp,
this misaligned glass since its not flush is creating a bad light leak on the left side of the phone and, also the case is cracked at the mute button.

no questions asked swap by by apple, but Jesus Christ, do NOT walk into the apple store 2 minutes late on your appointment! i had to fight with them because i hit traffic after driving 50 miles and was 3 minutes late, and they wanted to push my 11am appointment to 8pm at night.

the new phone has a late feb build date, feels alot more Solid, and yes it has a left side light leak, although not as bad as my first phone....

Someone tried stealing my iphone yesterday, and in the process it dropped on the ground (about 4 feet or so). It now has some scratches on the screen.

However, it already had the cracked case near the mute button, quite badly compared to some I see on this thread. Do you think Apple will replace mine based on the mute button crack, despite seeing that it has also been dropped?

I couldn't be bothered before about the crack, but now I also have scratches on the screen, I'd love a new one.

Otherwise, does anyone have tips for getting rid of scratches on the touch screen?

Thanks all.

Cracks in the plastic case are known problems by :apple:.
Scratched screens due to failed steal attempt are not :apple:'s responsability.
Anyway just give it a try at your local :apple: store.
My last iPhone 3G that was swapped had the known cracks and also some dents because I droped it on an asphalt road when trying to answer a call. They replaced it without hesitation. They know they have a problem.
I wish that the next hardware revision has a soft touch surface like some other products have, like my TomTom GPS for example, soft touch paint I believe is what they call them.

My phone was about 5 months old and in mint condition with the exception of the crack near the headphone jack. I developed a crack (2nd time this has happened) and I called Apple to explain the situation. They overnighted me a new phone and I just had to mail back the old phone to Apple. They included all the packaging and postage.

Great service!

I have the tiny cracks around the headphone and mute sockets. If I take this to a UK Apple store and they replace it do they erase the old phone in front of you? Does this securely delete all personal info on the phone? Presumably they reuse the phone so dont want my passwords / e-mails to end up with someone else.

The genius started the erase right in front of me.

I got exact same crack going!!! and it also just appeared overnight.

Take your phone to the Genius Bar. I did last week. The Apple rep looked it up on the computer and it said "known issue." They game me a new phone.

I too recently discovered a crack in my iPhone, by the silence ringer switch. Have had mine since launch, and dont recall it ever being dropped. I made an appointment at my local Apple Store Genius Bar (Southampton), and after a quick inspection said they would replace it. Started the delete process, boxed it up, and gave me a shiney new one there and then! (well i think its new - how would i tell if it was a refurbished one?)
