Mine developed a crack near the vibrate switch. The Indianapolis Apple Store is completely awful when it comes to the Genius Bar. I have yet to receive decent service there. Any luck with mail ins? Do they still do that?

This is my 4th iPhone and I have come up with a mutual agreement between Apple that when the new iPhone is released I will trade in my one for a New one then

Ive had a whole range of problems;

iPhone 1 - Crashing, manual restarting every 3 - 4 days, light leak side, bezel, is loose, cracks at charger and slight at volume bar

iPhone 2 - Dead Pixels within 4 days,

iPhone 3 - 3G never works, light leak, crack near charger

iPhone 4 (Current iPhone) - Dead pixels, crack at headphone port

I have always used the Apple charger and headphones so I have no idea why these cracks form, the charger cracks may be due to heat but I have no idea why the headphone port cracks. Can post pics if wanted

Anyway, Im just glad this matter had been resolve by Apple, the Apple Customer rep has also given me a slight indication of when the new iPhones are due out, she said Mid/late July which isnt too bad

Before some of you say Im being to OD about my iPhone, Im a student and paid good money for it, I dont have £300 to just throw around, In my opinion, I deserve the best quality product (which hasn't been apparent) and customer service (which has been excellent!)

Good luck

A followup. Yesterday I took my iPhone with at least 9 cracks in the housing to the Genius Bar. The Genius took a look, asked if he could do a diagnostic test, in which he plugged the iPhone into special software that tracked the device's usage, etc. Then he used a special lighted magnifier scope to peer into the earphone and power adaptor ports - to look for indications of moisture, I'm assuming. He asked how I've carried the phone (I said in my front pocket or in pocket in my shoulder bag). Then he gave me a new/refurb. iPhone. He said that Apple has fixed the problem with the cracks in the housings. So far no cracks. One particular thing I noticed was the Genius was not very friendly. He just went about his business without much regard. I expressed my appreciation for his help - but that didn't elicit much in the way of "customer care." To me he seemed to have a "tired of nit-picky customers" attitude. Seems to me Apple is trying to stem the tide of warranty claims by being more careful to verify that a warranty claim is legit.

I was beginning to wonder if there was such a thing as a 3G iPhone with not cracks in the plastic....

I'm a 2G iPhone owner who is worried about upgrading due to the seemingly inferior build quality.

I've been following this thread since I got my black, 16G 3G phone in 7/08. I used to examine the phone daily, and then weekly...sure that a crack would develop. I also used a magnifying glass. Well, I've never found a crack. I have no doubt that some phones developed cracks, but I wanted others to know that not every 3G iPhone has cracks. :)

Had mine replaced for the 2nd and actually 3d time today at an apple store. My phone had two cracks coming off the data connection port. Like the first time it was very easy. Made an appointment, showed the genius my phone and asked me if I had backed up the phone before I came in. Then said that he suggests that they replace it because if the cracks become larger than the phone is more likely to have damage from moisture or damage to the data connection. I said ok and had a new phone in minutes. Didn't really think to look at the new phone for cracks so I went on my way. Once in the car I looked and sure enough there were three small cracks coming off the screws and one in-between the data connection and the screw. Took it back in and with an apology I was on my way with another replacement. I can live with these minor issues as long as apple is always willing to step up and replace it. Granted it is a hassle to go to the store and handle the exchange and none of this should happen in the first place, but at least apple stands behind the product. Thanks Apple.

Ive had my Iphone since July/08 and have recently noticed 2 cracks were the power adaptor attaches, right above the screws. It sounds like this is a common problem.

I have around 2 months before the first year is up.

My queastion is: Should I wait to report this until the new phone is released or asap?

Do you see any problems returning it?

ok, do u people use ur phones or just look at them all the time??

i have the black 3g, i only use a screen protector because any case just makes it too bulky for me..

i have never dropped it but i have small scratches all over the back just from using it.. and there are two lines of small scratches from where the phone sits when u set it down, one going thru the apple logo and one going thru the 8GB..

its hard to tell on the black really, but one thing i did notice (only after reading this thread) is that the chrome around the headphone jack has chipped off completely..

oh well, its still a 3g iphone and that being said, its a phone, and its gunna get worn sooner or later.. thats why you just buy a knew one every couple of years..;)

Has anyone had problems with small little chips appearing on the back of phone? It is like little pieces chipped off or something!

If you return the currrent phone for warranty issues....ie cracks etc after the release of the new Iphone this summer would they replace it with the newest Iphone or give you a refurnished model?

Yay...mine finally cracked at the ringer toggle switch area. Amazing build quality/durability....NOT!

This even makes me want to abandon the iPhone all the more...and get either the Pre, N97 or i7500

I noticed these cracks in the housing of my white iphone, as well.

Very glad I saw this and noticed I wasn't the only one.

The cracks don't seem prominent, as they seem beneath the glossy layer of the housing (I'm not sure of there are layers) and they all seem to be in areas that receive a lot of pressure from pressing (sleep/awake button, ringer/vibrate switch, volume control). But I do have a crack coming from my earphone jack that is prominent and can be felt.

:(

Took my cracking white 3G to the Arrowhead store in Phoenix yesterday, along with my 2 year 1 month old macbook with bad battery and walked out with a new/refurb iphone with no cracks. For the macbook they replaced the battery and the cracked keyboard surround. All for no cost to me. Pretty tickled, except the girlfriend bought 70 bucks worth of smelly candles a couple stores down.

big problem with the white iphones.. i bet the black ones have the same problem but we cant see them hopefully next iphone will be made of platinum lol

Two days ago i made an appointment at the Apple Store at the Biltmore in Phoenix AZ. Its about a 40 minute drive, so its more than 'out of the way'. I went in and my appointment was slightly delayed because the guy was with someone else, but about 20 minutes later when i finally came up, he asked me what the problem was.

I explained that i had a large crack at the bottom, by the dock connection and that when i charge it it gets extremely hot there and that i thought that was the cause. He instantly shot me down saying that they dont cover 'external damage' because i could have just dropped it and decided i wanted a new one. I explained that that didnt appear from a drop or pressure or anything, it was caused by the heat (though i also have cracks by the headphone jack) and he said it didnt matter. When i asked if it was a manufacturing defect he said 'yes, but we dont cover physical damage'.

I left with the same cracked case i came in with.

Is there a way i can get a replacement over the phone, i'd really rather not deal with the 'geniuses' at the genius bar if this is the response i'm going to get for a faulty case on a phone i payed good money for. Any help is greatly appreciated.

after not posting on here for a while i just noticed some more cracks by the sim car tray, a BUnch by the dock connector and a wierd mark on the bottom left of the iphone, ... very interesting... BLAh apple needs to just go back to the metal im pretty sure the metal ones had alot less of a return rate than the 3g had/has .... or at least give us an option to upgrade to a new phone if their current ones that they are making aren't going to last the length of the contract
:apple:komio

Try another Apple Store

I went to my local Apple store to complain about my ringer switch crack and the lady assured me that i'd get a replacement anytime i wanted as long as the phone had no water damage and that i can continue using the phone and come back to get my replacement when i'm ready...seeing as i have transparent shield protectors which are difficult to transfer. She then proceeded to put this note on my account for reference when i return.

I also have a similar IOU for my MBPs screen (dead pixels) which i couldn't leave with them due to needing my machine for school work

one thing that the guy said at the end (after) though instead of AT&T mine says '<3' next to the signal bars from a looong time ago when i was jailbroken, i'm not anymore, i'm on 3.0, but for some reason that still shows up. He said 'i see that you hacked your phone, so even if we did cover it, i couldnt help you'

is there any way to get rid of this?? I've restored my phone probably 5 times since that was put there.

Not really helping your cause. Sync/backup with iTunes and erase and install everything on the phone via the settings menu

I took my iPhone into the Apple store finally this past week and was given a new one due to the cracks in the housing. I had a laundry list of issues with it, but had waited to get it replaced until I was near a store (I live 6ish hours from the nearest). I didn't even have to tell him about the hardware issues I was having, as soon as he saw the cracks on the case he said I would be getting a new phone. They did of course check for water damage and then handed me a refurb that's in perfect condition.

I too have a laundry list of issues, including a few cracks near the dock connector. Should I use the cracks as my main problem in order to get a replacement?

I have a few problems with my iPhone and with the warranty due to run out thought it would be a good time to have a word with Apple.

Some photos have been getting taken with a kind of motion blur effect on them. Actually, just like those in the Final Destination movie. Now I think about it, that's kind of creepy ;)

SMS messages often arrive out of sync and I'll get 2 or 3 message arrival tones instead of just the one.

Finally, there was what I thought was a scratch, but upon closer inspection, its clearly a crack. It starts on the back, in about the middle of the dock connector and goes directly up for just over half an inch.

I spoke with Apple today and they spent hardly any time on the other issues, mainly concentrated on the crack. Has it been dropped? What pocket do I carry it in? Is it normally in a protective case? What sort of case is it? etc.

I guess they're trying to make sure I'm not just chancing my luck having dropped my iPhone, but as someone who has taken care of it, I'd be disappointed if they don't consider the other issues as well when they receive it.

I made a reservation to visit the Genius Bar about the cracked housing, and the Apple representative on the phone had one question that made me curious - about whether I used a case. I said "no. Why do you ask?" The rep downplayed the question, saying it's just a question they ask. I'm a little suspicious now, though. I wonder if they are trying to deny replacement for housing cracks by blaming tight cases - or carrying the phone in the back pocket (sitting on it), or any other minor detail.

My argument is that the iPhone shouldn't need a case to be safe. It's not printed on the box or on the website "recommended to be put in a case". That's total BS if they deny you. I always roll with my iPhone naked because cases do more to cheapen the device and look retarded. If iPhones need a case, one should be included in the box.
