Um on my 7th iPhone 3G. All replaced because of battery issues, dead pixels and the infamous cracks in the housing. This iPhone has more cracks around the vibrate button ad dock connector. I'm going to get it exchanged soon. I'm wondering if I wait till there are perhaps no more 3G left if they might replace it with a 3Gs???

i found mine while i was finding a way to replace my phone since i have this deep scratch right in the middle of my screen and look what i've found atleast 5 hairline cracks around the power button, ear jack, and the bottom dock.

So I had my iPhone for about 9 months now(September 2008) and I found some cracks near the ringer/silent switch yesterday night while cleaning my iPhone. Will I be able to take it in the apple store and get it replace? I'm from Canada so I'm not sure if they will replace it for me....
EDIT: I haven't drop my phone once and it's always in a case.
Thanks to anyone that can answer my question.:)

Have an appt tomorrow with Apple to exchange my white 18GB 3G iPhone due to cracks next to the silent switch.
This will be the 2nd time.
Same spot too.
I have had the crack for a few months, but wanted to wait until my warranty was close to being up (July 10).

1st time was very easy, the guy knew the problem and I was in and out in 10 min.
I hope it is that easy again:)

It wasn't easy the second time for me. The Genius bar guy said that they are not recognizing this as a "known issue" anymore and he was "doing me a favor." Next time I'll just try another Apple store! Good luck!

My iPhone 3GS isn't even out of the plastic wrapping yet and it clearly has cracks around the volume button, speakers and screws. O2 have no more stock and replacing it is a pain as they will not swap at my work address.

Not sure if it is worth it, if replacements all have (or develop) this fault.

Well if the crack don't bother you. But my fear is later down the line the cracks might grow. May cause moisture inside. Many things. And if anything, I get a "newer" phone about one year later.

Got a 3gs the other day. Noticed a few cracks near the sim card deposit. They are hairline not really noticeable but I can't sleep knowing they are there!!

Spoken to O2 and they are sending out a replacement asap.

In addition to this I just noticed the same sort of cracks on my white Macbook. Its only a couple of months old.

Same old Apple! Shame their products are so sexy or I would buy an alternative.

My husband and I both had the same cracking in the exact same place (by the dock) of the back of the phone and got ours swapped out at the apple store a couple weeks ago with no problem.

i had 2 small cracks on my white 16GB 3G near the sim slot. Also some dust under the screen.

Just got it swapped out a couple days ago at my local Applestore, no questions asked.

iPhone 3G Cracks .. Rogers

Last night I noticed a crack beside the USB connector on my iPhone 3G. I called Rogers today and the representative said "well ..... I can send you a replacement and then you will have to send your phone to Apple. If they decide that the crack is due to abuse, you will have to pay $550.00 for the refurbished replacement that was sent to you. You can't send back the refurbished replacement." He said that if I had an Apple store near me it would be easier because I could simply take it in to the Apple Store and let them have a look at it. This sounded like quite a gamble to me. The phone currently works but the crack is quite large. I told him that I have never had a phone crack before and that the crack seems to be at a weak place on the back of the phone. He then told me that I could contact Apple directly to see what they had to say. Perhaps there would be a local genius that I could take the phone to.

So, I called Apple Care (1-800-myapple) and spoke to someone and I told her that I noticed a crack when I took it out of the case to clean it last night. She asked me where the crack was and I told her that it was at the USB connection. She asked me what kind of case I used and I told her that it was a soft silicone case. She then asked which way the crack went on the back case and I told her that it went straight up the middle. Then she said ... "no problem, this is something that we can replace under warranty"!!:D:D

So she is shipping out a replacement and then I will send back my old phone after it arrives. SWEET!!

Thanks Apple!!! :apple:

P.S. This picture was taken with my wife's new iPhone 3GS. Not too bad!

I posted this in the 3G S cracked thread, but I'll tell my story again here.

About four-five days ago I bought a white 32 GB iPhone 3G S, upgrading from a white 16 GB 3G. I thought everything was fine at first, I guess because I didn't look too hard at the phone.

I noticed I have cracks by the tiny screws on the bottom of the phone, by the speakers on the bottom of the phone, by the volume button on the side of the phone, by the headphone jack, and one by the sim tray. Also, upon closer inspection, I noticed that on the left hand bottom corner of the phone the plastic doesn't sit flush with the bezel and there is a noticeable gap where dirt and dust are already starting to get in.

I called Apple yesterday for a replacement. They told me that because I've just bought the phone and the product is so new that they will send me a brand new iPhone, white box included. Unfortunately they couldn't guarantee me a time of delivery since the product is so new, but I'm hopeful that it won't take too long - afterall, there doesn't seem to be any supply issues considering I walked into a Rogers store the day after launched and picked this phone up.

I'm shocked that Apple hasn't sorted this problem out. They've been using these case designs for a year now and they are still cracking! Worse yet is that last night I was comparing screens between my 3G and 3G S and on the new phone I also seem to have the yellow tint issue!!! Apple has some serious quality control issues going on and I'm, quite frankly, sick and tired of having to run around to get these issues with their products sorted out. If it wasn't for the OS of the phone I'd be long gone by now...

Interesting. I noticed the same thing on my 32GB black just yesterday. It actually looks like maybe the screw hole was misaligned or something. And I have hairline cracks around the dock connector, mainly along the little thin strip of plastic in-between the connector and the bezel. Silent switch is also loose as all get out. I don't know if I should go to Apple or not to exchange. My screen is pretty good (little bit of a gradient with white up top to very, very light yellow at the bottom) and I don't have any cracks elsewhere yet. :(

I have a feeling this thread will never die...... I noticed rough edge where the cut was made(dock connect, slient switch, screw holes?) I'm sure that's where the crack starts. They should've gone with matte with softer plastic.

Whoa! Mine cracked in the exact same spot. I never dropped it ever and always kept it nice in it's case. Took it to the Apple Store, they said it was not a known issue and they could not swap it out.

What is the easiest way to get your phone replaced?

Try calling them instead of going to the Apple Store. Might work in your favor.

Should tell them something else is wrong with it?

Just tell them the truth. Tell them that, when you took it out of your case to clean it, you noticed a small crack on the back plastic where the USB connector attaches to the iPhone and that the crack goes straight up the back of the iPhone.

Cheers.

I would have it replaced. As much of an inconvenience as it is to go through the run-a-round it will give Apple the message that customers are not willing to stand for a poorly designed product. Plus, if you get it replaced right now chances are they will give you a brand new one as opposed to going a few weeks or months from now when the refurbished ones will be readily available for them to give out.
