If o2 skipped EDGE and went straight to 3G they sure didn't tell anyone! My 3G enabled phone has never accessed o2's 3G network- not even sure they ever turned it on.

And this brings me to my point- where is o2 in all this?? The other 4 major networks all have HSDPA modems for mobile broadband access and are aggressively competing in offering people a real alternative to fixed line broadband access and yet o2 are nowhere to be seen- this doesn't bode well for the upcoming 3G iPhone.

o2 seem to be the only major network not investing in upgrading their network, or actually using the dammned thing- I'll buy a 3G iPhone and unlock it to another network the second it's cracked

Err, it's on, you've probably accessed it if you've used your browser perhaps accidentally. O2 was bloody slow in getting a decent data rate - the Bolt on for non-iPhones only came through when the iPhone deal was ready - they were way behind the curve on pricing. I 'd imagine they're dragging their feet, as with a 3G iPhone, they're about to see a large increase in data for their 75% of the population area that is covered.

It doesn't bode anything at the moment.

It's time for a 3G iPhone here in Holland as well:

I just came back from the Apple Store in Salem NH. They have 0 iPhones. The salesperson was shocked at that because they have a hard time keeping 16 GB in stock but always have 8 GB in stock.

Same thing in the NYC 5th Ave store. But it seems just like demand is too highg at the moment, lots of want to 2 at once to fly back home and get unlocked. The dollar is so low at the moment and unlocking got really wasy and safe...

Maybe a 3G iPhone in the Netherlands next saturday. :D
This would certainly drive some people nuts!

IF Apple ramped up the production a week ago it's possible, isn't it?

Big things in June…

It was no coincidence that the SDK was given out 3 months a head of June -- June marks some major stuff for Apple.

There will be some major press conference sometime around June 24 (last Tuesday in June) and Jobs will announce the number of iPhones sold in the year that's passed; How many countries that are now selling the iPhone; talk of the SDK and how much progress that everyone has made; showcase some of the top apps available as this press-conference day; Talk of the App store and how it will revolutionize the iPhone and how it's put the competition another 5 years behind; iPhone software v. 2.0 will be announced and he will go over all the new features + talk of several new apps by Apple that have been working on and "are now available" ... finally, he will introduce the NEXT generation iPhone.

Oh yeah -- big shiz iz gonna go down in June. Major announcements.

I just watched the iPhone SDK event again and noticed somethings you may all find interesting:

1. Steve Jobs says that the App Store is going to be added to all iPhones and that that is how developers will be able to reach all iPhone users. - Why not simply say that they are distributing the App Store with the 2.0 firmware and that all users can download it? The way Steve Jobs says it it sounds like there will be more than one iPhone version when the App Store is launched.

2. Steve Jobs says that apps can be downloaded via "wireless download" from either "cell network or WiFi". - Why not say that the apps can be downloaded with EDGE or WiFi? Yes he doesn't want to remind people of the lack of 3G but still it is a little weird to hear him say it this way. Also why can you download apps via the "cell network" and not songs? I think this is because it will also support 3G.

For number 1, I think you have to remember that the SDK presentation was a big pitch to potential developers, and saying that every iphone will have access to the store where you'd sell your program, is better than saying that the store will be in the next firmware update and users can download that if they want. There was a big push throughout the whole thing to remind you that every user will have access to this stuff, its to show developers that they can reach a big market.

Sounds right to me. Look forward to buying the 2nd gen iP this summer :)

yeah i pretty much agree with this.but like everyone else i hope it happens sooner but it prob wont

Seriously good insight here, JGowan.

You've saved me a great deal of research into previous patterns of Jobs' Keynotes, and allowed me to book a long deserved break in the remotest place on Earth for the whole of June!

Now I know I can return to find a new 3G iPhone waiting for me, I'm a happy man.:)

Would be smart of Apple to release in June since most people will start to receive their stimulus package from the government. Coincedence....

I was going to buy one iphone a week ago. Would have bought it if they weren't sold out! Appears to be a problem all across the USA, at least the 16GB. Now with this rumors that the 3G will come out in june at the most i'm going to wait. Can anyone give this newbie some odds of:
1- comming out before june
2- comming in june
3- comming only in the 4th quarter

I think it's almost certain that the iphone 3G will be out this year, but if anyone disagrees let me know!
Thanks

Hello,

It is very hard to predict what the odds are of when any Apple product will or will not come out. However it is far easier to give the likely time frame for the release of a given product. This information can usually be figured out by looking at Intel's roadmap, listening to what Asian supplier's say, and sometimes rumors are accurate. Analysts however are wrong more often then they are right however. Especially Shaw Wu...

Now based on the information that is flying around at this time the most likely time frame for the launch of the iPhone 3G is June - September. If however you asked me to be more specific (which lessens the odds of being correct) I would venture an educated guess and say that we will see the iPhone 3G previewed in June and launch a couple of months after that. Of course I hope I am wrong and we see it sooner.

What I think about each different rumor is:

3G - Definite
3.5G / 4G - Impossible
GPS - Extremely Likely
32 GB - Likely
OLED - Not Likely

When it comes to Kevin Rose's Front Facing Camera prediction I see a problem with the design. No matter where you put the camera it would not always be on the top of the screen due to the fact that you can turn to the device thanks to the accelerometer. Yes landscape mode would pick up the image but it would not be the ideal viewing angle for the person you are video chatting with. I think it is quite possible Apple will utilize a patent they filed which uses the pixels of a "PDA or cell phone" to capture an image like a camera. Then when you look at the screen you are looking right at the person on the other side of the chat.

I due however think that they will launch the video chat app in the third version of the iPhone. Once they release the 3G iPhone they still need to keep some features out so that they can sell another version after the 3G one. This third version of the iPhone will likely utilize the Morrestown architecture of Intel's.

I think we will also see some of the following in the 3G iPhone:
MMS
Copy and Paste
Voice Command / Voice Dial
Thinner Design

It is important to note that Apple will want to make this iPhone look different from the first generation EDGE iPhone's due to the fact that they will want consumer's to be able to easily distinguish one model from the other.

I think that when it comes to the lacking supply of iPhones in the U.S. this may be because the supply of iPhones were temporarily sent to Ireland and Austria due to their recent launch. This may be fixed shortly. Then again this may be to prepare for the launch of the 3G iPhone. Just remember...

Gartner pulled the comment that Apple ordered 10 million 3G iPhones. They have come out saying that the quote was taken out of context.

Anyway what do you think? Any other information that you need?

that looks rational and most likely to be correct

When it comes to Kevin Rose's Front Facing Camera prediction I see a problem with the design. No matter where you put the camera it would not always Be on the top of the screen due to the fact that you can turn to the device thanks to the proximity sensor.

First of all, your statement is incredibly confusing, but I finally figured out that you meant to say "turn the device" not "turn to the device", and you meant to say "accelerometer" instead of "proximity sensor".
I see what your point is, but where did you get the idea that the camera always had to be at the top of the device? Assuming the field of view is wide enough, It would work just fine in landscape mode, or at most you'd have to tilt the phone by a few degrees. Many of the existing 3G phones with forward-facing secondary cameras have a landscape mode so I'm sure its not a big issue.

I think it is much more likely that Apple will utilize a patent they filed which uses the pixels of a "PDA or cell phone" to capture an image like a camera. Then when you look at the screen you are looking right at the person on the other side of the chat.
Now thats just ridiculous. "Much more likely" to use a totally new, unproven, and most likely very expensive to develop technology for a very minor problem? As i said above, supporting landscape mode with a forward facing camera is really a non issue. At worst, Apple would just make videochat only available in portrait mode and avoid the issue altogether.

A GPS would be a welcome and exciting feature but considering the amount of effort Apple has put in developing the Google Maps and rewriting the codes again and again...

Im guessing we might not see GPS after all!

3g asia

why do you guys alway mention 3G as present in Asia? Do you know what 3G even is? I don't

CDMA? UMTS? HSDPA? what?

There isn't even a certain version of CDMA, Asia has a different CDMA variant than Europe. Let alone UMTS.

Asia doesn't have the same 3G as USA or Europe! See here for more info on different 3G standards: http://eurotechnology.com/3G/

the next gen iPhone

some say that there will be a Pro iPhone ... tough I´m starting to doubt that

I will say that next iPhone might have intel inside because you can dev universal iphone apps

tough that is not the most wanted feature.

Because Apple is pushing 802.11n over there intire product line the one thing that does not have it is iPhone so it make sense that next gen iPhone will have 802.11n tough it depends on the chip they are going to use ..

Front Side Camera ? Offcorse ..

the next step for iPhone is defently iPhone Video chat.
I´m also beting that apple will release a Windows version of iChat so that people can video chat between a iPhone and any pc/mac ..

Improved backside camera ? maybe
but there will be official video recording possebility and maybe event the ability to record a video chat .. and ability to send it via email, .mac

so what hare my guesses:
3G/GSM
iChat video (and a windows ichat app)
frontSide camera
802.11n

maybe:
imporved backside camera
GPS
faster CPU
more memory

when Apple release a iPhone with a front side camera I will say that it sholry will also be a MobilePhotoBoth version that flashes the screen white like it does on mac

and as a said a Windows iChat app .. it seems its the only one that is missing .. iTunes, Safari ... iChat ...
