"Why would Apple ramp up production of the new modell if it's not available till late june?"

Nobody weakened this argument, yet.

erm, because it is still just a rumour...

geee you could float a hot air balloon with the amount of hot air in here

what has the last few apple shows taught us? expectations are always higher then reality

I think 3G in November still, milk 2.0 for all its worth

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Math just doesn't work.

Here's one:
http://www.usatoday.com/tech/wireless/2007-05-21-at&t-iphone_N.htm

Money quote: "AT&T has exclusive U.S. distribution rights for five years — an eternity in the go-go cellphone world. And Apple is barred for that time from developing a version of the iPhone for CDMA wireless networks."

Sorry. I'm already AT&T so it doesn't bother me as much, but it must be a real pain for people happy with their current provider.

I re-reread your post and still can't figure out what you're saying. You might be right about June though, just because ramping up production takes time.

ok sorry i wrote it very quickly. when they demoed the app store they said u can dl apps through wifi and the at&t network. right now for the itunes store u can only dl through wifi.

Well it's worked on me!

As I said before 3G is very poor in my area so I'm not fussed. But even a hint at a new feature that promises better battery life warrants a wait.

This new feature doesn't promise better battery life. It threatens worse battery life (though anything is possible.

Sooner the better!

I'm waiting for an iPhone that will work in Europe and Japan, but I can't wait forever! This should come out August 1st at the latest, or they'll miss the back-to-school crowd (and yes, college students will want iPhones!).

2nd Gen iPhone:

Better sound quality from speaker/earpiece
3G
OLED Touch Screen
32GB internal memory
iSite for video chat!!
GPS built-in

3G in Saint-Petersburg. Coverage surely isn't vast, but I spend 90% of time in the blue areas.

Lets not get our hope up for major change

I think it will be the same thing. Just an iphone with 3G. Maybe a camera upgrade since camera for cellphone are less expensive now.

Though, to be honest, that's all I really want anyway. If they threw in more, that's just icing on the cake.

Don't 3G chips use as much power as Edge chips now? I'm sure I read something to that extent. That (which could be wrong) combined with OLED would mean a longer battery life over current iPhone models.

Or maybe the extra 3G power would balance out the OLED benefit so we're back at square one?

Higher capacity battery plz Apple.

Either way I'll give them till June. If nothing happens then I'll jump on the iPhone bandwagon with the 16gb flavour. 32gb would be very, very nice and I would buy that.

A 3G chip has been released (though well after the initial iPhone release) that brings power usage to what Apple would deem an acceptable usage level. It's generally accepted that this is the chip that would be used.

Tax Rebate

Apple could definitely use up 10 million of those Economy Stimulus Rebate checks if they release it in June... Imagine a brand-new iPhone with 3G, a OLED display, 32GB, better speakers and such, maybe GPS, maybe even a forward-facing camera (remember, ATT is starting video teleconferencing in select markets on their samsung and other brands of phones)... All at $599. So you get your rebate check, and pay just a little over $30 (depending on state tax rates) for a brand-new iPhone. :)

Trust me, if I see what i like when it comes out, I'll be one of those geeks in line this time!

802.11n?

I wonder if the iPhone 2.0 will support the higher speed 802.11n wifi being rolled out by Apple across its products?

There are CPU load, power draw, and physical size (chip set and antenna) to consider.

Any experts on this stuff in relation to 802.11n out there?

Yes, I call it the Apple Stimulus Rebate. Not that there's anything wrong with that. If I don't buy an iPhone with it, that money would be earmarked for a Lego Millenium Falcon, and Lego is a European company.

Me too. My rebate is going in my savings account until the next iPhone model comes out.

I'll be waiting for the 3G iPhone :D

probably, but we know Apple's new way is to charge customers through the nose for a software upgrade, given they charged for similar updates at ipod touch and other formerly free accessories or integrated modems.

funny that apple may charge for this, as they make alot of ongoing money from customers via wireless plans

Steve announced that the 2.0 software will be a free upgrade for iPhone owners and a pay upgrade for iPod Touch owners.

Um, Apple is an American company. Why would they want a product that their own executives couldn't use themselves? USA first or at the same time as everyone else, period.

Sony does the same thing on its products. They come out in Japan months before they come here to the states.

Steve Jobs to Board meeting: "We refuse to release a product that we are capable of producing in Europe to increase sales and profits and benefits to our share holders until I can use one"

(Ponders: Actually, not all that far fetched...)

I don't mean to rain on everyone's parade, but remember that all phones must go though FCC for review, and remember why Steve unveiled the iPhone so early last time?

Since we haven't see jack from the FCC, that means iPhone 2.0 / 3G is still months away at best, not June.

A lot of people have mentioned this!

I've quoted the below earlier in this thread but read on....

I'll start backwards. For many devices, you can go to an outside company, certified by the FCC as their proxy. Unlike the FCC proper, they don't have to say anything right away. In other words, you can get your approval and keep it hidden as long as you want. The moment you want to sell, you have the outside company give the FCC the approved submittal and it becomes public.

However, cell phones are in a special category, and you can give your test paperwork only to the FCC. (Since it can cost tens of thousands of dollars to run tests, you don't do this unless you're pretty darned sure you'll pass.)

At the time of submittal, things are still private. The FCC checks the results, ask privately for any clarification, and you go back and forth like that until they stamp an approval on it. At that moment the approval becomes public knowledge, or at least can be found if someone is watching.

But... you can add a request to keep the parts list, schematic, manuals and any photos (such as the test setup) private for a longer time. I believe it only costs about $300 to do this, but don't quote me on it. You can also request that the schematic and internal details be kept secret forever, so that others cannot make direct copies. Apple does this a lot.

In the case of a privacy request, all you can see are the radio test results. That's enough to know if it's 3G or not, but not much else.

Here's the thing. We all know 3G is coming, so even if one were approved, so what? It wouldn't be a surprise. It wouldn't tell us when it's going on sale, what it looks like, does it have an 800x480 screen, 32GB, keyboard, etc.

So in theory, they could wait until the day of approval and announce it. Or announce it weeks later. But that lacks the showmanship that Jobs likes. So your guess is as good as mine, as to what they'll do. I'm sure there are long time Apple watchers around here who can give us a good guess.

Isn't this a little to early to be ordering this many phones?!(guessing if it is right)

All my friends have an iPhone...I try to stay on top of the rumors circulating only the release date of the 3G iPhone (really don't care for the amount of storage)... I am hopeful for an announcement at WWC 08 coming up with the release of the 3G iPhone on the 1 year anniversary of the iPhone at the end of June. Doesn't that sound intriguing or no? Then over the next year after it's released, it will just get make-overs like this past year; primarily storage and software updates...

Can't wait for June!

This has been discussed before, and no, AT&T doesn't bill 3G and EDGE separately. Data is data, no matter how fast or what way you get it.

Yes, all of AT&T's 3G phones do just that.

Hilariously sad, but true, AT&T is spreading their 3G network as fast as they can. I assume larger cities will get it first, but I'm not sure as to what areas already have 3G with AT&T.

I'd say most major cities have 3G now. I'm in Oklahoma City and 3G was turned on here about 3 months ago. Tulsa also has it. These are some of the smaller markets. Rural areas, as always, lag behind, but AT&T is slowly getting there.

The cost of the phone, not the cost to apple. No one's going to buy a $1500 phone, which is probably the order of what an OLED iPhone would have to cost (extrapolating from the cost of OLED lcd's and the current price.)

Dave

Did you not read this thread and see other phones/MP3 players that are using this technology and at normal prices? Please back up your '. . a $1500 phone, which is probably the order of what an OLED iPhone would have to cost . . ' statement. How are you extrapolating? Taking the price of current phones and dividing it by screen size or something? Show us your math please!
