I wonder why it didnt have a Front camera from the start. Any old japanese phone does...

Apple preys on the stupidity of there young geek following who line up and sleep outside for weeks in advance to buy there latest gadgets. Of course they could have done this from day one but why should they when million of young impulse buyers will rush out to buy the latest thing. Everything that Apple has done over the last few years should prove to everyone that it pays to wait unless you absolutely need the product immediately.

Possible, but unlikely. The video chat would be a HUGE bandwidth hog on the cellular network, not to mention the battery. They could possibly limit it to Wi-Fi only, but that doesn't seem like Apple's style to complicate things like that.

Hmm ya sure Apple hates complicating things mostly by choosing AT&T as their carrier, good thing there's a law suit on that and we're finally going to see other carriers for the iphone.

gprs = 2G 5kb
edge = 2.5G 20+kb
3g = 3G 70kb
hsdpa = 3.5G 200-400kb

hsdpa in the uk is at 1.8MBits, moving upto 3.6MBits this year, I myself have experienced the glory of 1.8MBits on my old Toshiba g500, its the onlything that lets my iphone down.

ordinary 3g has speeds about 0.7Mbits I think

close but no cigar

hsdpa is a form of 3g - well in as much as 3g is anything - 3g is just a phrase, not a technology as such

and in the uk hsdpa has already reached 7,2mbps on vodafone in parts of the network, plus the really exciting stuff is the up link hsupa which means mobile data can now have upload speeds pretty fast too and in some cases quickr than many home broadband providers

Not true at all, many people waited ages for an update to the 5G iPod, only to see the 5.5G and then a long time of waiting before the Classic came out along with a touch with too little space for them.

Evidently you don't.

3G (or UMTS) is just an umbrella name for the likes of HSDPA, HSPA, HSUPA etc.

If you are going to be that picky, then I will as well.

"3G (or UMTS)" isn't an accurate use of 3G.
3G = umbrella name for any "3rd generation" cellular network technology. The actual IMT-2000 standard includes air interfaces for W-CDMA (UMTS, HSDPA, HSUPA), CDMA2000 (1xRTT, EV-DO), TD-SCDMA, and 802.16e-2005 (mobile Wimax).

Most common 3G tech :

UMTS "classic" (384kb/s) = UMTS revision '99
HSDPA = UMTS rev v.5
HSUPA = UMTS rev v.6

EVDO Rev.0 = CDMA2000 EV-DO
EVDO Rev.A = CDMA2000 EV-DO
EVDO Rev.B = CDMA2000 3X

turnable/ flip-able iPhone camera

I had an idea like this in that Jan. to Jun. waiting time but a little different:
the camera would be on a turnable wheel sort of thing. it would face outward for pic/ video & inward for pics(photo booth)/ video/ video chat. also a mic would be on the wheel. I don't think that apple would put 2 cameras in a cell phone that they are trying to make as small and thin as the can. I know that in the pic the camera is way too small that was my mistake when I was making it. But its more about the idea.

Better add more meat to the camera wheel, because all your images will be your fingerprints.

it would be turned automatically form within the iPhone. Also in the drawing I intended it to bigger (I think I've already said that).

Although I don't doubt Apple could make such a thing and has been known to use unique hardware elements in place of the conventional, you have to remember that a second forward facing VGA camera is commonplace on mant phones and that they are already manufactured to be extremely tiny. With any luck, Apple could be using an updated version who's CCD is even smaller than what is presently used in other phones. Either way, I don't think the mass of a tiny 640x480 camera sensor would be considerable enough to spend all that time on R&D of a new solution. The iPhone is plenty big to contain one.

update: I read your other post, and I do think that that system would be quite awesome... one click and the little camera on top rotates 180 degrees. Very nice, although how practical/reliable it would be with moving parts and all I dont know.

Those of you making mock-ups, you do realize that Apple would likely hide the camera under the glass a la iMac rather than expose it (like having it bisect the speaker grille or have it be a rotating little thing on the top fringe of the phone)? It's possible to have two cameras and still have a thin phone. Sony Ericsson's W880 and W890 serve as pretty good examples of this

everyone wants to lifecast these days, and apple is reinventing the phone naturally video chat is the next thing. forget about voice forget about text its you me and nothin inbetween. this guy is right on but whether well see it as soon as he has predicted is yet to be realised.

Anyone else feel there should be a macrumors primer on the definitive road to 3G and beyond? Or at least it's interplay with Apple...

... as well as TD-CDMA/UMTS-TDD (IMT-TD), TD-SCDMA (IMT-TD), EDGE (IMT-SC) and DECT (IMT-FT).

DECT (IMT-FT) has been in use for cordless phones since 1992.

EDGE (IMT-SC) is also very common. Hey, the iPhone v1 is actually a 3G phone because it supports EDGE! :p

However, when people talk about "3G" they usually mean "UMTS" or "EV-DO", whereas EDGE is classified as "2.75G". (If you're really picky, then CDMA2000 should be classified as "2.5G" and EV-DO as "2.75G" because both are based on 2G CDMAone, just as GPRS and EDGE are based on 2G GSM.)

On the other hand, newer UMTS updates are also referred to as "3.5G" or "3.75G". :confused:

this would be amazing. ever see those cisco commercials and think, iChat can do that... I want that on my iPhone!?

Just don't forget we don't have iChat on our iPhones.

And from what I've read about this Kevin Rose fellow, I find it hard to believe anything he says without some kind of conclusive evidence. As they say, "pictures or it didn't happen."

And even with pictures, there is so much room for fakes even then its hard to believe. As someone else said earlier in this thread, if Apple doesn't want us to know what's going on, we won't. Sit and wait patiently (or impatiently) and when Steve is ready to knock us on our asses with new toys, he will.

Whether this rumor is true or not, I'm actually excited to see what the 2G version of the iP and iPT will be come the end of June (which seems to be approaching fast). I actually use video iChat (using the external iSight) on my laptop and would be very interested in having that in a phone.

As for a front-facing camera, this might not require a lens: Apple has a patent in place which describes a way for a display's pixels to capture an image in front of them, rather than a traditional camera lens:

Apple Integrated Sensing Display

Having a patent doesn't mean it's producable.
Don't get me wrong i love this idea and i think it points to all the reason the iPhone doesn't have front facing camera as yet (well that and on point until you have 3G or better data).

As it stands now where do you put the camera?
easy answer as close as you can to the top of the screen.
So it looks as much as possible like you are looking at the person when your looking at the person.

on an iPhone which is the top?
What if you are talking to a number of people you want to turn it landscape right?
Which you could over wifi, or maybe even over 3G if a server did the video composing in the middle for you, or you have faster mobile bandwidth.
So now there are 3 places for the camera.

Having the screen as the camera is a bit of a game changer.
Use either orientation to suit the conversation.
You would always be looking people in the eye when talking.
a multi-party chat you see when someone is talking to you and when they are talking to the other person.
The camera screen is also the multitouch sensor.

It really does make the whole think "just work" so to speak.
Still you do have to be able to make the screen as a reasonable cost.
