I doubt it.. Why on earth would the iphone need to be more powerful? That would just eat the batteries. It already runs rings around the PSP and pretty much every handheld device on the market. The CPU is already great. :)

Also nice to know the people who're making games already are working on the same basic spec as the 2nd generation.

So true, we don't need the extra confusion of apps needing some specific iPhone model. All the apps will have to work on all models and hanging on to the original hardware is the best and cheapest way to do this.

I have been reading the product brief for this chip and can find nothing to back up this claim. While is can be interfaced with A-GPS, I don't think it actually has a GPS chip on board.

EDIT: NVM that last part, I was reading about the wrong chip :D

No looking at the block diagram the GPS is supported by an external chip. It's possible that apple have added it but it's possible they haven't, so we don't know anything either way.

Same processor?

Same processor but more powerful perhaps?

It does seem odd that they would put the same processor in the new iPhone. Though I am completely happy with the performance of the processor in the current model, I think that they would want to increase the power with the App store and third party Apps coming out. This would provide more flexibility for developers. I guess we are at the point that we will just have to wait and see on Monday.

How about this feature?

How come everyone talks about this for the most part useless stuff.... don't get me wrong.... I like toys also.

My wish and think it would make sense to put in the new phone is 802.11n! Most want to use WiFi and Apple like to put it in every product, but when you have a b/g device on the network with n everything slows down. If Apple is pushing the 802.11 thing then it would make sense if not even in the first iPhone to put this in there.

Just my two cents! :)

I am actually surprised i haven't heard about this from people before. I also think it would be cool if the iPhone supported more touches. I think it suports 3 now, but if they made it 4 or 5, then you could start to see a lot of those patents that were on macrumors awhile ago put to use.

If you are confused by Apple having different models please don't force the idea of never seeing an iPhone update onto the rest of us. I fully expect Apple to have different models available in the future, WITH DIFFERENT FEATURES, some of those phones will likely have faster processors and yes even more RAM.

Your post is really the expression of LUDDITE thinking.

It does seem odd that they would put the same processor in the new iPhone.

The only info we have reference to right now is the designation for the ARM core not the chip it is implemented on. That is a very powerful and widely implemented core.

Even at that the core is running well under its maximum clock rate in the SoC that Apple is using right now. So more performance could be had on the current iPhone simply by turning up the clock rate..

Yeah wait and see at this point is really the best thing to do. I also agree with respect to better performance to really make new apps shine or for that matter give Safari a boost.

To that end there are a couple of things that Apple could do on future models. One would be to add more RAM as right now the lack of RAM is an issue. The other would be to go to a newer generation SoC. This chip would be of higher integration and running on a newer process. Effectively it should lower power demand and increase performance.

Tri-band would be great. Anything other then 3g is just icing on the cake. The original was almost perfect!

Would have to be quad-band at least to be useful. GSM 850/1900 for North America, 900/1800 for Europe. And you know how Apple always makes one hardware version for all markets (which is why there's no Mac with a built-in TV tuner, for instance).

54mps???!!!!!
oh my.

that's faster then my dialup connection.
i sense a rather large bill coming up.

The iPhone doesn't need to be more powerful. I don't see much of a point.

Let's say the new iPhone comes out and it's 40% faster. Developers will still have to target applications to run on the old iPhone too, so nothing will max out that extra 40% without dropping support for the old iPhone, and the dev would lose too much money cutting out half of their market base.

No, let's save the battery power and just put a lower powered CPU at the same speed, or put the same CPU.

I completely disagree. I think the iPhone needs to be more powerful. It is awesome how it is, but it still has trouble sometimes opening up programs. There are times when text messaging (even after I cleared all the text messages) will take a 3-5 seconds to open up; may not seem like much, but it is very annoying. This is even when I don't have my iPhone memory filled all up more than 3/4ths the way. This has also been constant with the 3 iPhones I have had.

That's the truth. It'd be nice to spread the iChat love.

I end up using Adium all the time, even though it doesn't have all the nifty features. I have lots of friends on gTalk and MSN as well, not only AIM and apple's protocol.

For all the nifty msn features, use Mercury Messenger. For AIM and Google Talk, use iChat. I think you can use msn through jabber in iChat too. :)

Quad-band GSM is no unusual feature for UMTS phones. Actually, not having quad-band GSM (or not having EDGE, BTW) would be unusual.

... and why there won't be a CDMA iPhone. :p

(IMHO, the main hurdle for TV, however, is not the different TV standards but the different ways of transmission: terrestrial, cable and satellite).

People do bring up a good question in how fast/slow will the iPhone become if people start adding all those apps

My iPhone has really done a fantastic job continuing to stay fast even though almost all 8-gigs is full so I suspect and hope that the new ones will stay as fast with all the new apps that should be found on it after a few months

I will say that I got my iPhone on launch day and it hasn't been until the last 2-3 weeks that I have seen it get a tad slower to button reactions.

Nothing too bad though
