It:s because the 22,000Y is the price of the phone after a discount. They actually charge you the fulll price 80,000 over 24 months... but you get a discount every month so it comes out to 22,000 or something like that, a little more for the 16 gig. However, it looks they are not giving you the discount probably becuase your old sharps were still under contract. I would take a Japanese person who has lived abroad (ie knows how to be an ass) or A foreigner who is good at Japanese to the softbank store and raise hell that they didn:t tell you wouldn:t be getting the discount.

...
The only things I really missed from my Docomo phone is:
1. Video calling
2. A hole to put a dangly strap on (dropped my iPhone too many times now)
3. E-moji

Err, that’s it. I cannot think of anything else. I just hated how much bloated stuff was on the Docomo that was unnecessary. The iPhone is just a more streamlined and elegant experience.

Oh, lastly, my Vaja Leather Case came recently. I took some photos, so you can have a look (with white iPhone) on my Flickr Photostream:

Sweet case! Do they make it without a belt clip?
Can't you just attach a strap to the case somehow? That's what I did.

I just wanted to point out a couple of things that have improved noticeably for me since upgrading to 2.1:

- Japanese input now very fast
- Reception WAY better -- now getting three bars where before I was getting only one.
- Battery life improved, but still not optimal
- the new and improved (read: doesn't totally F*** your iPhone) Wisdom J/E Dictionary shreds. No need to wait for those pokey online dictionaries or worry about a signal.

Not really related to 2.1 but I'm really digging MobileMe, now that they seem to have cleaned up the bugs and got it up to speed.

And yeah, the Safari browser on the iPhone beats the pants off anything I've seen on any Japanese phone, by any company.

I have no need for video calling, and that ain't gonna happen with this hardware, anyway! But I believe I've seen third-party apps to do video with the camera?

Still waiting for:

- Select/Cut/Paste text! (preferably with link to J/E dictionary -- a Toshiba I had several models back had this built into the interface; it was VERY useful)
- Yes, emoji. Mavis, no joy yet on that end even jailbroken?
- Fully functional GPS features. (Google's managed to get c. 360 degree street view of the freaking alley behind my apartment but they can't sort out giving directions?)

- anybody else bothered by how hot the thing gets if you actually talk on it for more than like 10 minutes? I've taken to only using the earphones...

Cant wait till i get my iPhone ... next payday :D

Why are there so many issues with iPhones in Japan?
I dont get it.

Emoji option...

Although the iPhone doesn't support graphical emoji, did you know it has a collection of text based options? Just switch to QWERTY or kana and type かおもz (that's "kaomoz") and you'll have a bunch of text based emoji to choose from.

Some examples: (>_<) (^ ^) m(_ _)m

Found this in an issue of Mac Fan at the bookstore! Not a perfect solution... but better than nothing.

i think the "z" is actually "ji" as in じ. so instead of emoji, it's kaomoji (かおもじ). kao means face i believe.

anyway, awesome tip! thanks. i had seen a few of the faces when i had written the corresponding japanese word. for example ureshii would bring up a happy face. i always wondered if there was a way to bring up the whole list. it's not emoji but it's better than nothing for now.

Yes, kao does mean face... I wonder if the magazine tip used kaomoz as a typical Japanese short cut... As in Sutaba for Starbucks! But you're right kaomoji brings up the same options!

Not the same options...

Thanks. Yes, you can choose one without belt-clip, but the Vaja belt-clips are great. So easy to un-clip my phone when a call comes. I suppose I can attach a strap to the case in some way. I would probably get a strap with cleaning-pad attached as the iPhone screen gets smudged so easily.

Thanks for the great tip. I tried both and it is better to use かおもじ (kaomoji) rather than かおもz (kaomoz) as the former one bring up alot more text-based faces. The latter has only a few.

I am with Docomo and won't buy the iPhone (though look nice)
However I'd like to get one of those Touch 2G to do VoIP and stuff like that!
BUT why the hell aren't they out here ?
Anyone has some idea (It is said to be release between the 09/20 and the 10/10.
I guess it will be on sell the near the 28...

I think that won't be easy to get one since so many people want it here !
That's a bit scary ~.~

thanks for the great tip.
BTW it also work for the kana keyboard as long as you write kaomoji

So there's no way to write emails to people with AU phones? I can't change the encoding or anything to shift-jis?

It depends on the phone, I think. Some AU phones can handle UTF-8 encoded emails, others apparently cannot. I have two friends using AU phones, and emails to/from both of them work just fine.

The Best Japanese Dictionary on the iPhone???

Well, here is another great reason to get an iPhone: because of the quality apps that are appearing in the iTunes store.

I was waiting patiently for THE Japanese dictionary for my studies and think I have finally found it. It is called ‘Japanese’ by CodefromTokyo.

Why is it so good?

Well, firstly, you can ditch your Nintendo DS dictionary with stylus now as this app has kanji search based on writing the kanji on the screen with your fingers. No only that, it also shows kanji stroke animations! If this was not enough, it has a custom word banks to be able to save your current study words. Also useful is when you search for verbs or adjectives -- it shows a list of the conjugations for them! Other minor stuff is having pre-selected vocabulary lists based on subject theme, hiragana & katakana reference tables, JLPT levels section to help you to study for the exam, and, for future editions, the ability to share your vocabulary lists with other users via a website.

One of the best reasons to get an iPhone (or iTouch as I think it is compatible) in my opinion if you are studying Japanese. This app rocks!

Here is a link to see the app in action (kanji animations and writing recognition)

You could already look up kanji with your finger without paying a dime. The Chinese keyboard allows you to write kanji, then just enter it into WeDict with a Japanese dictionary installed, not to mention I already know the stroke order for all kanji, just learn the radicals and you know it all.

Although I'm sure that's probably a well built program, but I'm a cheap bastard.

Please don't choke autofellating yourself.

:D Classic!

As much as I love threads that degerate into kanji knowledge pissing contests, I'm glad you took the time to squash this latest attempt in such a humorous manner. ;)

You guys act like that's really much of an accomplishment and that I actually care at all...

Even if you guys don't know all the radicals you should be able to guess 95% of them just by using the basic rules you learn the second you learn kanji, and then most programs show the kanji even if you get it wrong. In short, it's useless to know them, don't get offended over such insignificant matters.

Then you act like you guys are all superior because you can throw out insults, yeah, that really helps you.

A little irony for those studying Japanese...

Well, for those who are studying Japanese, isn’t it ironic that the essence of the Japanese language is based on humility, politeness and respect?

Time to re-review your Japanese studies, me thinks...
