So, looks like my iPhone died for some reason. Yes, with 2.1. At first it kept crashing and then couldn't find a signal. Tried restoring, but that didn't fix the antenna problem. Still randomly reboots and goes back to the "Emergency Calls only" screen. Tried restoring from there, but sometimes, it only get half way through and then dies.

Anyway, so the only way to get a new one is from the Apple store, right? I remember when I got this, they Apple will deal with all support issues and not to bring it to Softbank. That's just terrible.

What terrible about it? I don't know about you, but I would MUCH rather deal with Apple directly than have to **** around with the imbeciles at SoftBank. At least the Apple people have a clue from time to time - SoftBank staff OTOH, are absolutely WORTHLESS.

Well, it's just that it's a hassle and I have to wait in the queue. I live like almost right across from a Softbank store. I had an enkai tonight, but if I had any other phone, I probably would have had the time exchange it and make tonight's commitment with time to spare. Now, I'm phoneless till I visit the Apple store tomorrow. Man, if I lived in some place like Fukui-ken or Shiga-ken, it would be kinda crazy coming all the way to Nagoya just deal with a keitai problem

I hate to break it to you, but if you had any other phone, SoftBank wouldn't just swap it out - they'd send it back to the manufacturer/service center for repair. I know this because I had to do it once. They gave me a loaner phone but it was a major POS ... I had to use that piece of crap phone they gave me for THREE WEEKS, while I waited for my phone to be returned.

Be thankful that you can get a replacement iPhone on the spot at Apple!

Finally cracked...!

Well, it's finally happened... my phone has a crack near the mute toggle switch. I was wondering if and when this might happen.

Anyone have any word on the process to deal with this in Japan? I know in the US, you can just bring your phone into an Apple store and they'll exchange it... but I live about 4 hours from the Fukuoka store. Wonder if they'll ship one to me...

I'm betting Softbank won't be very helpful. I wonder if they're even aware there's a problem.

Any direction would be greatly appreciated... will try calling Apple customer care tomorrow or Monday.

Well, the brigade that was moaning about how the iPhone will fail in Japan because it does not have Emoji...

Well, here folks (especially you Japanese ‘finger-clicking’ ladies), be happy! 461 funky emoji icons! :)

QUOTE]

Awesome, this looks perfect. I'm almost certain this will just be for Japanese customers, in Japan emoji can be sent over SMS as well as Email or whatever. As another user mentioned it uses a code type system, so the picture I send of a train may look different on a Docomo or Au user's phone, but it will still be a train!

I got myself a new touch yesterday for the nike plus functionality and i'm loving it. Looking forward to getting the iPhone but I'm going to wait until after October the 14th, just in case steve-o has 'one more thing...'

Very cool, but "while... iPhone 2.2 firmware contains the emoticons, they are not user accessible at this time"? So what's the deal? Emoji are going to be in 2.2, but in some weird "latent" form we can't access without special apps or something? Someone more programming-savvy, enlighten me, please.

I heard it was probably Softbank who designed them as they have recently revamped their whole emoji icons for their mobiles. Each provider (Docomo/AU/Softbank) has a different look, so if I send you a message with emoji, depending on what provider you use, it will look different.

Quite handy when I had a Docomo phone. I’d just text my mate with ‘beer’ icon + ‘football’ icon + ?

So much faster than typing a sentence!!

Not sure if this 2.2 emoji update is just for the Japanese market though, so I wouldn’t get your hopes up as it could actually be useless for users outside of Japan. Who sends emoji on their mobiles in the western world anyway?

Quite likely SoftBank did them, I'd say. Either way, they look pretty slick.

I very often used the same combination (on JPhone/Vodafone/SoftBank), minus the "football"! (Just [beer]+"?") Efficient, indeed. Interestingly enough, we're really getting back to pictographs for written communication! (Think hieroglyphs/early kanji!).

That’s funny!

Maybe it is a sign human beings are regressing/de-evolving!!

Soon, rather than sending beer+football emoji combination, it will just be “grunt”. Or double grunt if you want to go to the disco instead.

Well, here is another great reason to get an iPhone: because of the quality apps that are appearing in the iTunes store.

I was waiting patiently for THE Japanese dictionary for my studies and think I have finally found it. It is called ‘Japanese’ by CodefromTokyo.

Just wanted to let everyone know about another excellent new offline J-E dictionary app similar to Japanese based on the EDICT that is free.

Kotoba

They are very similar apps (aside from the price) although Japanese appears to have a few more bells and whistles like stroke order of kanji. Kotoba also allows handwriting input of kanji using the traditional Chinese keyboard.

HI,

I want to get an Apple iPhone. Can anyone give me the differences between iPhone and blackbarrey. I will be grateful. Sorry, to post it inbetween but it seems new threads cannot be created here.

Thanks for the heads-up. Nice work, especially for a free program!

I've also been getting a lot of mileage out of "Japanese Flip" and "Kanji Flip" (not free, but extremely reasonable at ¥600 a pop) to review my kanji, but what I'd really like is something like King Kanji, which I have on my old Sony Clie, where it gives you a reading and/or definition and you have to write the kanji. Checks your stroke-order, too. Anybody seen anything like that for the iPhone yet? If not, give us a heads-up if you do, OK? Thanks!

I'm not all that familiar with the Blackberry, but one of the big differences USED to be that the Blackberry had an actual physical QWERTY keyboard on it, which I found unpleasantly small. But it looks like the newer Blackberries are going to be all-touch screen, and extremely iPhonesque. They'll be on Docomo, so you will pay more, very likely. I haven't heard any updates on when they'll drop in Japan (it was supposed to be this fall), but that's probably because I don't really care: I've already got an iPhone. But you might want to wait and have a look, especially if you're a Windoze user.

The iPhone has a better selection of apps available for it, at this point, and likely will continue to. The Blackberry very likely will have a better camera when it comes out in Japan. Don't know what the interface on the new Blackberries will be like.

So, is the @i.softbank.jp still blocked by default for most AU users?

Got a chick's keitai mail(AU), but don't wanna go through the awkward process of asking if she gets email, nor do I want to have to try sending to multiple addresses.

Since 3 days ago I could not access my Gmail mail from the mail app from my iphone, although I can still access it through safari on the iphone.
It is working alright with my yahoo account though
Am I the only one with this problem?
Did softbank do something wrong again?

I have no problems with my gmail account.

I'm getting Gmail through the mail app without difficulty, so I don't think it's a SoftBank issue. Try rebooting yr iPhone?
