Could access again my Gmail account tonight after 5 days of inaccessibility without doing anything or without rebooting.
strange, but as long as it works I am happy

You go 5 days without rebooting??? I probably go about 5 hours, tops.

no real problem since 2.1 for me except some times when I have to reboot when safari get unstable.

BTW the Gmail account is not accessible for me again from this morning.
it seems that one of my college has the same problem:(

Yeah, mavis, but you have like a thousand apps on there, right? I only reboot mine every few days (seems to help keep apps from crashing). Gotta charge it every night though.

Actually, I've whittled it down quite a bit - I think I've got about 20 apps installed now. I've purchased/downloaded about 120, but I don't bother synchng most of them. ;)

I find the iPhone gets pretty sluggish though, after only minimal use. Maybe the apps I use most have memory leaks ... ? I spend most of my time using AP News and Newsstand, but free just a few hours there is noticeable sluggishness everywhere, particularly Photos, Settings, and Safari. Rebooting seems to do the trick.

Oh yeah - you said you have to charge every night -I can't even get through the day without charging! I think I use my iPhone more heavily than most people - for example, it's only 9:07am but I'm already down to about 60% on my battery. I used the iPhone on my hour long commute, plus 15 minutes or so when I woke up (I like to read the news in bed every morning) and now at work about an hour. So two and a half hours of 3G data already today, which means I'll have to charge it before lunch.

This is probably why I have to reboot more than most people - I use the phone A LOT. ;)

Anyone else having the email program crash repeatedly when entering Japanese text? This is getting ridiculous. I can't understand why any Japanese person would actually want this phone.

Scared after tethering

I'm an iPhone user here in Japan. Unfortunately, I have the Japanese proficiency of a three year old. I was satisfied with the 3G Internet use price ceiling explained to me in English when I signed up for the phone, but now I'm a bit worried...

I just jailbroke my iPhone this morning. It's 1:18 AM, and I'm coming down from a two hour downloading crack binge on my macbook. I tethered it to my iPhone with the PDANet application I got off of Cydia. I must've cleared 500 MB already.

I'd love to read the fine print of my Softbank contract, and my detailed usage online, but my Japanese is too poor.

Softbank could very well accuse me of tethering, and charge me ****loads of yen. Are there any Softbank iPhone users here who could tell me if there was any fine print about tethering on the contract? Or any Softbank iPhone users who were billed extra for exceeding some arbitrary amount of packets that Softbank considers excessive beyond their "unlimited" plan? I know there were extra fishy data charges on their "unlimited" data plans for other 3G phones, like checking PC email, etc...

Just wanted to let everyone know about another excellent new offline J-E dictionary app similar to Japanese based on the EDICT that is free.

Kotoba

Thanks for the heads-up. Nice work, especially for a free program!

I've also been getting a lot of mileage out of "Japanese Flip" and "Kanji Flip" (not free, but extremely reasonable at ¥600 a pop) to review my kanji, but what I'd really like is something like King Kanji, which I have on my old Sony Clie, where it gives you a reading and/or definition and you have to write the kanji. Checks your stroke-order, too. Anybody seen anything like that for the iPhone yet? If not, give us a heads-up if you do, OK? Thanks!

I've got another excellent recommendation on the dictionary front: iEijiro. I've been waiting a while for this one and it was just released. I rely on the excellent Eijiro dictionary on my Mac quite heavily and was waiting for a reasonably priced version for the iPhone/Touch. This one clocks in at 1000 yen. I'd say it's WELL worth it. 1,975,000 J>E entries, 1,670,000 E>J entries, 120,000 sample sentences and 30,000 abbreviation entries.

For anyone looking for a great J>E/E>J dictionary this is a hard one to beat.

is there any reports out of how the iPhone 3g is selling in Japan. My friend says the sale are low and that apple hasn't sold 500,000. I don't know if that true or not because he's anti Apple. If it's not true I would love to know that so I can rub it in his face thanks

Does it feature hiragana of the kanji while translating E>J?

I think you're referring to furigana (basically a phonetic representation of kanji in hiragana) and unfortunately, no, it does not. In that respect it is a lot like the Wisdom and Longman dictionaries. I wish it did. I have yet to find a great quality high end J>E/E>J dictionary that does but most of these are primarily marketed for the Japanese user.

How does this dictionary compare against Kotoba?

Kotoba is a fine freeware dictionary based on Jim Breen's excellent JMDict/Edict Project. It has matured over the years with user support into a very valuable resource. But it has limitations.

For me, the single greatest limitation is the lack of sample sentences. Often, just finding the definition of a word is not enough when that word could be used for any number of meanings depending on the sentence. Dictionaries like Eijiro also contain proverbs and sayings. In terms of size there is really no comparison, Eijiro dwarfs them all. It has more sample sentences alone than Edict has word definitions.

Another issue with Edict is that it was made by non-native Japanese so sometimes obsolete or little used words are offered as definitions.

I use Kotoba quite frequently though as well as Eijiro. On my iMac I use Jedict with both dictionaries loaded and always show definitions from both with every search.

You really can't complain about a free product. ;)

... 1-seg on my iPhone. Yippee.

Free Wi-Fi, however, will be nice:

And emoticons "within the year".

Looks like 1-seg and an extended battery pack is on it's way to iPhones in Japan. It's a bit bulky for me, but it's a good start and a good sign of things to come.

Any word on the setup for this? I believe Yahoo!BB is found at McDonalds in Japan, right? I'd like to see if it works!

BB Mobile nowadays is one of those multi-ISP wifi access companies. To get online at a BB Mobile location, you need an account with one of the ISPs ("providers"), such as Yahoo!BB, Softbank, iPass, etc. So if one of those providers is having a free promo, you might be able to take advantage of that during the life of the promo, but it might require you to be an existing customer of something or some other arrangement.

Yahoo!BB was the original owner of BB Mobile, so getting online with a Yahoo Japan account is probably the simplest way. I pay 300 yen or so a month to have the access tacked on to my Yahoo JP Premium account (a Premium account is linked to billing details, while a normal one is not). You will need similar arrangements.

Alternatively, if you have a Softbank Mobile subscription, I think there is an add-on option for you to enable BB Mobile access and bill it to your Softbank Mobile account.

Lots of the information online, in both Japanese and English, is quite confusing and/or outdated, so I hope that helps...

Actually, I think I was correct when stating Softbank was going to offer iPhone users FREE wifi access at all Yahoo!BB locations.

I received an SMS from Softbank yesterday detailing how to log in (I think). There is password and information on setup... so maybe we just need to choose the mobile point from the wifi network listing in the iPhone setup and enter the password.

Not sure because the SMS is in Japanese with lots of kanji and I can't forward it for easier translation. Can anyone else confirm? Thanks!

Emails To/From Au (ezweb.ne.jp)

So, is the @i.softbank.jp still blocked by default for most AU users?

Got a chick's keitai mail(AU), but don't wanna go through the awkward process of asking if she gets email, nor do I want to have to try sending to multiple addresses.

I have also had this problem, and it is really annoying. It's bad enough that mails from Au with emoji come through garbled, but this blocking of mails to Au is ridiculous.

About half my friends use Au, and about half of them just don't receive my mails. Today I had a colleague turn off the "Block Mail from PC" filter, and now he can receive my mails. Of course, the iPhone is not a PC...

I don't know if I should be mad at Softbank, Au, or both. It would seem really simple for the two of them to get together and have Au modify their filter to pass through i.softbank.jp addresses.

Now it's been 4 months since the release of iPhone in Japan - I'm amazed that this hasn't been fixed yet.
