Wired's Leander Kahney, arguably the most credible yet of those who've weighed in with alleged specs of Apple's upcoming 3G iPhone, is reporting the handset will be 22 percent thinner than its predecessor, not thicker as some earlier reports had suggested.

Citing "a programmer at a major software publisher," Kahney adds that the handset should also sport better battery life than the "up to 8 hours" of talk time advertised alongside its predecessor. It will also include GPS and twice the amount of NAND flash memory: either 16GB or 32GB.

What's more, Kahney's tipster claims Apple will allow subsidies on the new model as a means of attracting some of Research in Motion's existing and would-be Blackberry customers.

He points to an article by the UK's TimesOnline, which cites a UBS Investment Research analyst as saying the device could be available in Britain for as little as £100 (or ~$200) beginning in July.

Still, Kahney hedges his bets with a warning that he has not confirmed the integrity of the information offered up by his tipster.

AppleInsider is maintaining a running list of 3G iPhone-related rumor and news reports on its 3G iPhone topics page.

wow, revolutionary...people have been saying this for a couple weeks now, this is nothing new. I don't remember anyone credible saying it would ever be thicker.

Sounds great. That would put it a hair over 9mm, nearly 2.6mm smaller than it is now. By comparison, the iPod Touch is 8mm thick. Any thinner than an iPod Touch would be crazy I think. Thats about the limit ergonomics wise. So if there is a subsidy on this new version, then will we all have to purchase our iPhones at AT&T to get the cheaper price, or will we have to give Apple our AT&T account information at the Apple Store to get the reduced price? Otherwise any eBayer could walk in and buy 5 $200 iPhones.

You know what I don't get though? The superiority complex that a lot of Apple users have. Some people have said they want to keep the price of the device higher so that not everyone will have one. Don't we want lots of people to have one? This will work out better for us because there will be a ton of new developers, Apple will make more money to develop newer technologies, and perhaps it will pull lots of people over to Macs as well. Then there would be more companies programming games and other things for Macs. Its a domino effect. I personally want everyone to use Apple products because it will only make my life better. Much more compatibility.

No, dont believe that the iphone will feature a voice option for GPS but even if it will you still dont NEED the voice. Why not look at the screen? If the thing has voice it could automatically be turned off when in a call.

Isnt it illegal to talk in the phone while driving in the US anyway, so that wont be a problem for you timimbo.

Edit: I see now that its still legal to use headsets. never mind my comment :)

I agree, and yes in Illinois you can still use ur phone even with out a head set, but not in Chi.

I figured if I'm paying that much for the phone, the damn GPS better have a sexy voice telling me where to drive.

I just see danger happening if you have to be concentrating on the phone and reading the navi all while driving a car. But damn it thats what makes America so great.

The price of the phone is one thing...the other charges are more important to me..... My bill right now is around $130/month so over two years I dropped over $3,100 so the $400 for the phone is a small percentage of the cost.

$700 is WAYY too much for a phone

My guess is :D
16GB- 399$
32GB- 499$

ALL models will have 3G, no "low end" model...isn't Apple already sold out of non-3G iPhones? Doesn't make sense to start making more.

I could see $699 unlocked from Apple, but if one wants a locked version from AT&T, a substantial subsidy or rebate would apply.

P.S. One possible solution that no one has discussed yet is that each color may be a different removable face plate.

I highly doubt this. How would you put the face plate on? There is no way that apple would put a clip of some kind on the iphone to hold the face plate in position, plus that would make the iphone look cheap.

Anyway, I definitely don't see the 3G iphone being priced higher than the current model. Apple has already learned their lesson on overpricing their products with the launch of the first iphone. I predict $299 8GB 3G, $399 16GB 3G, and $499 32GB 3G iphone models.

im sure the subsidies will be like all the other phones. 1 discount per phone for new customers or new line ONLY

They'd do it through rebates like AT&T does with other "Free" phones. You pay the full price and submit a rebate which they check against your line activation before sending you a VISA card with the rebate amount on it.

AT&T gives current customers discounts on new phones every 18 months, allowing them a crack at the "free" phones as well if they agree to stick with AT&T another 2 years.

$699US actually seems quite reasonable to me considering what most high end phones cost here in australia. In the past i have paid $1000+ for a PDA/Mobile. Even about 6 months ago the Nokia N95 retailed for $800+AUD. Personally i would be willing to pay up to $900 for the phone as long as it had GPS and 3G.

Chances are i will probably only go for the 16gb model though since i have had an iPod touch for some time now and have not come near filling it up.

It will never be unlocked, EVER. It may be CDMA before it's unlocked.... in the USA that is. In other countries, it may happen, but not the ones that Apple has in their pocket.

In alot of countries that they are looking to release the iPhone it is illegal to force network locks on a phone. Here in Australia they have to unlock it after 12 months or if you pay a fee.

Regarding the subsidies, sure, you'll get the phone cheapo but the AT&T subscription will likely be high as mount everest.

I wonder if:

16GB = $499 = No 3G
32GB = $699 = 3G

If so, that would really really suck. I didn't wait all this time for the second iPhone to be forced into buying a $699 phone!

Don't think so man, we already have a 16gb iphone with no 3g. There's a reason they let the stock dwindle down on both current models not just the 8gb ones.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A102 Safari/419.3)

I was one of the lemmings who stood in line for 5 hours on launch day for version 1.0. I think I'll pass this time especially if the prices are over $400 and ATT doesn't subsidize.

+1 I felt screwed being the early adopter last year and then having the prices drop. I think I can wait a bit this time.

I don't want to get into the habit of spending $600 a year for a phone.

1st newbie post

Based on how Apple releases there products is there a strict day? Like last year the iPhone came out on a Friday do you guys and gals think they will do the same next week? I'm wondering because I work nights and would need to request a day off next week. :D

I have a question about 3G. How secure is it? Will people be able to "listen" to my internet browsing the same way as with an unsecured Wi-Fi network? What about voice?

I have already done some searching on this forum and on Google but could not find any good information.

Can someone direct me to a good source of information?

Thanks.
